The best part about people learning how to fly is those who have grasped just the rough basics of it, so they always do aerial hits, but 90% of them are in abysmal directions and they're now out of boost to follow.

I'll take that free goal, thank you.

A noble art, to be sure.

I'm of the strong opinion that only one person needs to rush into the starting "scramble". Any more and it's a waste of boost (especially with the opportunity cost of EVEN MOAR BOOST) and opportunities to follow up on the initial hit.

On the other hand, I've been in the situation several times where everyone thought the other person was going to rush for the middle, so instead everyone backed off. That is of course the moment that the other team makes a perfect kick from mid-field over all our heads into the net. D:

Up on D-pad, then Down on D-pad ("Defending!")

Also someone should basically always be in the net on kickoff in case of flukes. I find it's less likely to go into the net though if you only have 1 person in the scramble, depending on starting positions.

Added my name to the google doc list. I usually get on for a few games every night on the weekends.

Also, I suck at this game, mostly.

I highly recommend watching Kronovi play 1v1. He gives tips on how to play and he constantly points out what his opponents do right and wrong (mostly wrong). A lot of times he just waits patiently for the other player(s) to make mistakes then punishes them for it. Really great for learning how to position yourself and when the correct times to make a move are.

Okay, I found something more infuriating than a laggy game/bad internet connection: overaggressive teammates who will knock you out of the way to steal a goal, and thus neither of us score a goal and we lose.

So we've got about 14 people on PSN on the google doc.

I think we could potentially get a doubles tournament going.

    Who's up for it?

Either pre-made teams or we could arrange teams by lottery.

Depending on how many teams there are we could go for a league followed by post-season knockout stages or maybe a group stage followed by knockout stages, or straight to knock-out stages.

I'm thinking considering the different server preferences knockout stages can be played over two games using each teams preferred server once. Aggregate score wins, in case of tie most goals scored on your non-preferred server wins.

Man, this is probably my favorite game this year. And that's saying something since Bloodborne came out earlier.

I got it free with PS Plus and then I bought it on Steam because I wanted to spend money on it. Added myself to the PSN spreadsheet.

This is really dumb, but I was messing around in free play mode and decided not to flip back onto my wheels. I don't think this would be a very good strategy in a real game.

This was a strange goal I got a couple nights ago. How the ball went from halfway in our own goal to me dribbling it back the length of the field to score, I have no idea. But I was pumping some fists either way.

I finally hit pro (level 20?) this morning, but I'm only silver in 2v2 ranked.

I was doing great in 1v1 ranked for a while, and then I had a string of like 10 losses in a row. Some of them were pretty epic losses too (like 7-0). I'm sitting around 300 or so now. I wish you didn't have to make a mad dash for the ball at the beginning because those ones where the ball pops out and your opponent just so happens to come out of the collision with a perfectly lined up shot while you're floating off into space somewhere with no boost... it's super demoralizing.

2v2 is better though as long as you're playing with someone who doesn't just race for the ball regardless of starting position.

Silver in 3v3 isn't bad really

  • RendRend Registered User regular
    It really isn't.

Spent a lot of Sunday climbing the soloq 3v3 ladder, and now I'm ~830 in 2v2 (with the great and powerful @crimsoncoyote ) and ~800 in solo 3's. Still winning most of my games so I should have some more climbing to do, but I had to stop playing because sleep is important when you have work the next day :p

My goalie skills are getting a lot more consistent, which I'm pleased with. I'm actually starting to get compliments from people occasionally.

3v3 is definitely better than 2v2 for playing with randoms. If you get a bad teammate in 2v2 you are completely hosed, in 3v3 you can potentially get one terrible teammate and still do kind of ok.

Agree 100%. I had a couple games with a specific teammate last night that was playing pretty poorly, but we were able to win anyway.

Also, it turns out that when you play late on sunday night and there's only 1300 people in the playlist, you tend to play with the same people multiple times in a row.

Goalkeeping is pretty fun! I just wish the game dished out bonuses/points a little more evenly. It's just as important as strikers, but with about half the glory. Even when I'm just average on offense, I'll typically get more points than I do as a shutdown goalie.

The point disparity makes me want to play forward all the time, but my team of randos will typically lose if I don't play the keeper.

Just gotta look at that win/loss ratio as the only stat to care about I guess.

  • RendRend Registered User regular
    edited August 2015
It's not that the goalkeeper is rewarded less than a striker- after all, a clear is worth 20, and a save is worth up to 60. It's that your score as a goalkeeper is inversely related to the skill of your strikers/defenders. If they keep the ball in the opponent's field most of the game, you won't get a lot of face time with it. Also, if they clear for you all the time (which they absolutely should be doing) you don't get a lot of face time with it.

Conversely, your point rewards as a goalie are DIRECTLY proportional to the opposing strikers' skill. If they're good, you are going to be talking very closely with the ball very often for 5 minutes.

Goalie rewards are an odd proposition since, in an ideal world, your team would never let you touch the ball. If you make contact with it, you've either moved out of goal to seize an opportunity, or your team has screwed up.

    Rend on
  • HalibutHalibut Passion Fish Swimming in obscurity.Registered User regular
I definitely understand that in theory. In practice, the people I'm playing with and against are not evenly matched, and we have the best chance at winning if I play defense (not because I'm especially good or anything, but only because no one else in a random match plays keeper.)

I feel like there are a lot of good behaviors on both offense and defense that are not rewarded with points, but I don't necessarily know how they could be rewarded. It would be awesome if you got extra points when your teammates compliment your play, but that could probably be gamed pretty easily.

Anyway, these are very minor nitpicks in an amazing game. If I didn't love it so much, I wouldn't be giving it half as much thought.
