Is any of this even about Oregon?

Sovereign citizens and their entire heaping mountain of bullshit has lots of elements that work their way into the governmental systems the Bundy's and their followers promote such as citizen grand juries, pretend judges, and the Harney County Committee for Safety which is what they're calling the unofficial, unelected shadow government of dildos/dimwits said dildos/dimwits have set up.

It's many different flavors of bullshit, but it's from the same breed of bull.

No joke, but the bolded sounds like something from 1984. Or a really bad parody of communists.

Isn't this what the "totally not Russian" government of Donetsk called itself back when they were pretending to not be Russia?

Most of them don't know how dangerous these people are and think they're just harmless kooks. Thankfully there are some training videos that have come out which inform officers how dangerous SCs are (very!) and what you should do when confronted by one (call for backup, act polite until backup arrives).

Interestingly this video (nsfw for video of that guy shooting the cop at a traffic stop) says that one of the SC warning signs is a bunch of anti-government bumper stickers.

"Wow, which law enforcement department has enough trouble with these geese to start making training videos about it?"

    That deputy is a saint

Imperial County is the southeast corner of California. Aside from the two state prisons, the economy is almost entirely agriculturally based, so there is massive seasonal unemployment (during the last housing boom, when the rest of the country was at 5%, Imperial was closer to 25%, despite countywide residential construction), which makes crime an issue. And with Mexicali just across the border, I would be actual money that deputy has had an encounter with drug runners or coyotes. He's not going to lose it over something as sad as a squealing freegirl.

Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion.

Because Florida police records are immediately and freely available to the press, who trawl them for stories and then the weirdest stories go nationwide, making it seem like there are a bunch of crazy people in Florida. There are a bunch of crazy people everywhere, you just don't hear about them as often.

Still there, they have all been indicted so their demand to have one of them not arrested has extended to all of them.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

So here's the part I don't get with sovereign citizens; they think they're seperate from 'murica and thus US law doesn't apply to them... But its like, house rules, no? I'm a foreigner, when I visit the US I still have to follow US law. I can't drive on the correct side of the road or go at a different speed limit just cause that's how its done in my country. What makes being a sovereign so special that they have implicit diplomatic immunity?

    Oh brilliant

Well, from that video, one of the ways some people claim they're sovereign citizens is via diplomatic immunity. http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2010/03/04/85060/sovereign-citizens/ So I guess they'd say yeah, as a foreigner you don't have to follow US laws.

It's not diplomatic immunity as much as convincing themselves that the government is a "scam," to varying degrees, that has been propped up on the foundations of the 'real' governement. Where that line exists probably varies wildly, but that is the common premise. (Although I'd wager the second amendment is universally deemed legit)

Take the Oregon goose who just posted that video of him driving around in the federal vehicle. He says they "can't tell him" it's illegal to defend himself against the cops coming to arrest him. They can't tell him that, because they are the arm of the sham governement , and the REAL governement wouldn't do that.

That's the most absurd thing about them. They tend to believe that somewhere in those laws is something real, something they respect, and that there are secret legal tricks and code words they can use to live only in that portion of the country's legal codes.

Because, I guess, that's the sort of thing comic book villains respect, and those are the only sort of entities capable of perpetrating what they allege has taken place.

The Bundy's think the Feds should turn over the land "because*". There isn't a more descriptive explanation for it, or SC's in general, that will not drive you bug-fuck insane if you attempt to internalize it.

[E] *Long version: Because someone once told them something they wanted hear and dressed up in legal fiction to make it seem credible.

    It's magical thinking, sort of.
Say the right words, and boom, stuff happens.
Completely ignoring that, if the government was not legitimate, there would be no reason for it to respect those words.
    It's pure magic.

Just for the record, the US isn't the only one that has this shit going on. Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zeeland have their own version now:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemen_on_the_land

An offshoot from the Sovereigns adapted for other countries. So lets not point fingers at the US, stupid is stupid everywhere and thanks to the internet its gone global.

However the UK does not have the same sense of humor and leniency towards the jokers.
Doug Jones of Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire, Wales, spent 22 days in prison after refusing to take a breath test. Jones questioned the authority and jurisdiction of the court, asking to see the judge's 'Oath of Office' which resulted in a sentence of fourteen days for contempt of court. He was sentenced to a further seven days after failing to attend a second hearing, but pleaded guilty to the original charges, receiving an endorsement on his driving licence. His interest in the Freemen on the Land movement started after watching documentaries on conspiracy theories surrounding the September 11 attacks and London bombings. His solicitor, Phillipa Ashworth, stated "On this occasion, in hindsight he appreciates it was not the time to test out philosophical theories behind this approach to life, and in hindsight it isn’t something he would do again."

Don't believe laws apply to you? A couple of days in prison will rectify that.

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours.

It's the extremist extension of the belief among many Americans that politicians lie about everything. If they lie about everything then they lie about the laws. After all, don't they regularly flout the laws themselves? Aren't the judges political appointees? Don't we regularly see even judges breaking or ignoring the law? Obviously then the laws must have some loophole, some way in which these people are allowed to do these things.

So some king-crackpots went delving through old "legal books" of dubious factual nature (there were a lot of those), and slapped together the idea that the real laws are those that existed some 80-100 years ago (many of which never existed at all). So they believe that the law as it exists now is a lie told to the people to keep politicians and politically appointed people in power, while the real laws are those that are hidden in the background like some Dr Who story plot point.

Yeah this is surreal. Hard to tell if they're playing it up or genuinely terrified / insane. They're ping ponging back and forth from "peaceful campers" to "we will fucking kill you if you tear gas us" to "oh god they're going to kill us for money" to "Hey, let's read the Constitution at them! Have we tried that?"

I feel like there's some specific pathology that causes them to think that the FBI should be stopping Clinton from running for President. Like, if it was that the FBI secretly supports Clinton - that's a standard type of conspiracy crazy. But it's another step to believe that the FBI should be stopping it; that requires some sort of convolution I can't quite grasp.

A good deal are also (formerly) honest folks down on their luck who have fallen for a scam artist. When you're thirty, forty grand in the hole someone comes along and tells you that that debt is the responsibility of this shadow entity with your name that the Federal Government controls. You'll become free and clear if you say the magic words (only $500 to learn 'em) and give this, this, and this paper to the county clerk. It can be pretty tempting for a lot of people who don't know better.

They're the ones I feel sorry for. The "tax protestors" (read: evaders) and the people who think that the U.S. Government is holding its citizens as collateral for debt to the Chinese, not so much.
