Tom Clancy was maybe not the best writer - actually, he was kind of bad - but I am strangely fond of a couple of his books and I genuinely love some of the movies and videogames made of them over the years.

The Hunt for Red October is packed with terrific actors - Alec Baldwin, Sean Connery, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, Scott Glenn, James Earl Jones - giving great performances in one of the smartest and most humane thrillers ever made.

Rainbow Six brought hard-hitting tactikill realism into our basements years before the deaths of thousands made it cool. It was great because it supported multiple modes of play - you could be like me and plan elaborate operations in the briefing room, setting up triggers and call signs so that your AI squad would complete the mission for you with you just sat back and watched and felt like an incredible badass. Or you could be like me when I got frustrated with that and just solo the missions as Ding Chavez, who had maximum stats in everything.

Splinter Cell was the spy-ops game with the somewhat less silly story and hyper-gruff Michael Ironside performance. Sliding down a zipline while machinegunning evil Georgians - er, evil Russian Georgians - was addictive.

Now comes The Division, penned by Tom Clancy® from beyoonnnnd the graaaave. New York is ground zero for the release of a deadly smallpox pandemic by terrorists. Most of the populace has died or fled, and Manhattan is ruled by lawless gangs backed by an evil private military corporation and also probably the Russians because T O M emot-911.gifC L A N C Y. It's up to the secret agents of The Division - ordinary people leading ordinary lives until their special signal watch rings, which I kind of like, it has a bit of a superhero flavor - to take back the Manhattan wasteland one block at a time. This involves teaming up with your friends, getting into rad tactical battles, and discovering better clothes with which to play pretty princess dress-up.

I wonder how much of (if any) The Division was inspired by Frank Herbert's The White Plague.

Isn't The White Plague how non-European countries refer to the 1400s onwards

reading the summary of the actual novel reminds me (though only tangentially) of the great Greg Egan short story, The Moral Virologist

Closing the last thread at page 91 even when our bravest citizens fought and died to give us 99

The riddle game is bread and circuses to distract the populace from our abject oppression by fickle and uncaring oligarchs

Let us put an end to these hunger games and defeat the spoiled, extravagant bastards in the Capitol!

Surprise! I'm the even-more-conservative faction that not only supports the status quo, but wants the entrenched powers to be even more entrenched by violently suppressing anyone not already in my camp!

Look I just want to [chat] and solve riddles.

First they came for Hakkes, and I did not speak out, for I was not Hakkes.
Then we had tea and cake and everything was fine, because Hakkes was gone.
    The End.

I think it'd be worth putting a link to Rieman's new version of the image size checker in the OP, in case anyone missed that.
