I really enjoyed the look and feel of Final Fantasy 8 for its time.
Yeah, the game itself was broken in a way FF rarely are (grind a few different monsters for 30 minutes or so and become unstoppable juggernauts for the rest of the game) - but I rather liked the characters, conflict, and the look/feel of the thing.
It is the first Final Fantasy to start leaning into more modern trappings also; not sure if that has been a net positive for the series, but it was very fresh when it happened.

He main story is so short though that you can probably just power through the rest of it if you want to finish in time for new nintendo
