I think it is because most of us have worked retail or at least understand how shitty retail culture is to some degree? But I observed the same thing almost canonically when I worked retail as well.
It's not like old people never worked retail when they were young. It's not a job only young people now have worked.
Maybe old people have forgotten because they haven't worked it in a while, or maybe patience with other people is something that wears thin over time. Maybe it's just old people in the US being awful.
