Final Fantasy 9 is awesome. Final Fantasy 8 was a shit show that I couldn't bring myself to finish. Final Fantasy 7 would've been rad with its original intended plot points / explanations in place instead of the shit they gave the NA audience.
I thought it was just a little too long but I still really enjoyed it and recommend it to folks who havent played it but like jurps with interesting mechanics

I really enjoyed the story beats/general narrative a lot. It was definitely extremely and unnecessarily long, especially if you wanted to platinum the game, but it was also beautiful graphically and narratively. I was actually surprised at how mature the story was? I guess? I dunno, I just found it pretty damn amazing altogether.
I'm pretty sure my PS4+Vita playthrough was like 87 hours long, a lot of which was grinding out those 100 boards.

Also XII was amazing, X is great, VII is great, IX is p good, VIII is decent systems and the BEST GODDAMN MINIGAME IN THE SERIES wrapped around a batshit story even compared to the rest of the franchise and some odd gameplay decisions.

I played through FF9 for the first time earlier this year. It's a very good game! But there were points that made me glad the steam version had a fast forward feature.
I mean it's at least as wild as assuming there was something special about VIII in particular that makes it difficult to port compared to VII and IX.
Not at all. Steam has almost no standards for what you can put out. Games that are so broken they basically don't even work can get on Steam. It's basically impossible for technical limitations to prevent you from releasing a game on the platform.
And yeah each of those games is ...a different game. There's nothing about Final Fantasy VII that informs what porting Final Fantasy VIII or Final Fantasy IX is like at all because they're different products with different codebases that do different things.
I should reclarify - I don't think there's something special about 8. I think there would be something special about the way they coded the remake for 8, since one of the first systems it came out for was the Playstation 3. Other ports like 9 were done later with more systems in mind.
I'm not surprised to see 8 missing from the Switch line-up. I've been told Nintendo has quality standards.
And with the low-hanging fruit out of the way I'm trying to find some condensed summary about what's being released to see if anything nudges my "Get a Switch" meter further towards Yes.

I HAVE VIII on Steam. They didn't do a "Fuck it, slap something together" port, everything was functional and fine. And given that everyone and their mothers is clamoring to get the entirety of gaming history on the Switch, I can't think there's a huge technological hurdle there. So...*shrug*?

That's the thing, is because there's a ravenous market for everything on the Switch, it clearly can't be so simple as porting it. If they thought they'd make more money from porting it than not, they would. The fact that they are not suggests there's some sort of unseen financial burden on porting it, such as needing to do more extensive recoding than the other jobs.
Given how lukewarm the reception was at the idea of yet another "physical DLC" game, I'm not surprised if they felt they have to ramp up marketing on the StarFox aspects to get it to sell.
