Anyway, the Russos’ Instagram posted a whole bunch of character posters and they seem to confirm which characters are dead and which lived, with a couple that were surprising to me
Mainly that Shuri seems to be dead and Valkyrie and Happy are seemingly both alive and in the movie
    Wong too.

He survived the snap but starved to death because Strange didn't bring him a sanwich.

It strikes me as an odd decision to Snap
Shuri. She seems like a character you could do a whole lot with in Endgame, especially considering how popular she is.

Get a drink but don't touch it until an hour into the film.
If I get a drink at a theater, it's gone by the time trailers start.

I don't want that to happen, I'd prefer it didn't happen, but that's just what happens.

Endgame doesn't strike me as a movie you're supposed to enjoy so much as endure and emerge triumphant

I mean, I'm planning to enjoy Endgame

I could be proven wrong, I wasn't big on Thanos in Infinity War, but I think it'll be enjoyable

I feel people who liked Infinity War will like Endgame

but the trailers seem to paint quite a bit of dour ruminations on the results of the Snap, and I can't really imagine that is going to be anything but a downer building towards a triumphant climax

I typically get a "Small", which - in US sizes - means that I sit inside the "cup" they give me instead of sitting in the regular seat.

All I need from Endgame is
    1) Captain America facing down Thanos even as his shield gets shattered.

    2) Nebula getting the gauntlet and punking the shit out of Thanos.

I hope there is a bit of dour here, maybe even stretching into some Grimdark in the first quarter or so.
I mean, half the planet's population is gone. Maybe dead, maybe something worse, but they're gone and nobody knows why or where or how (except for the surviving Avengers, and they only have a little information on hand). That's the kind of thing that should set a rather down environment, even if the remaining population managed to pull together and keep society running (which isn't where I'd put my money, were I a gambler).

Then the band gets back together, Iron Man and Ant Man show up, and things start looking up as the brains come up with a plan to solve everything and a lot of quantum words are thrown around.

I'm now just imaging people asking the surviving Avengers what happened and them being just like,"Nope we got nothing here either. No idea what happened. Nope we weren't there, what are you talking about we didn't lose shit"

    Shuri
Kinda makes Tony and Bruce less important characters which is totally fine going forward but I can imagine that two of the criteria for characters that get dusted was

    1. Well established and loved characters that will get a reaction out of people and will also have plenty of time in future movies to get their big moments
    2. People who would step on one of the core 6's toes.

    Shuri tags both boxes.

There was fun to be had in Infinity War. There was just also a lot of depressing shit too.

  • Options
EtchwartsEtchwarts Eyes Up Registered User regular
I could definitely hear the argument for Infinity War being too depressing to be fun

But I think that makes it the exception to the rule

I think that the MCU's big problem of every character being quippy means that every movie has some element of humor and light heartedness

StraightziStraightzi Here we may reign secure, and in my choice, To reign is worth ambition though in HellRegistered User regular
The fact that everyone is quippy just makes quips not as funny

In order to be funny in the MCU, you gotta have like, good physical comedy, which is mostly reserved for your Thors and Ants-man

Like I said, it's a big problem for them

It just means that, for better or worse, every MCU movie is going to at least be trying to aim for that nice, PG-13 humor

It's definitely the most common MCU criticism I find myself agreeing with, though, that's for sure

I'm actually kind of surprised that the one with apocalypse and Imhotep fighting the brood got a panel, since it's fairly recent and kinda obscure

I like me some quips, but I feel like "Quippy action hero" is an industry wide phenomena rather than just something the MCU engages with.

When I watched Batman the Animated series years back,i was honestly shocked at how often Batman (who feels like one of the classically serious batmen) was spitting out one-liners.

I think it's more noticeable in the MCU because there are a dozen "main" characters and almost all of them are the same kind of quippy

It really hit home for me watching Doctor Strange and realizing that I hated how snarky and quippy he was

I feel like Doctor Strange should have a much drier sense of humor

I had kind of the same problem with the length of infinity war as with AoU; they’re long enough to feel like they drag, but they also have so much plot development that I’m not sure what I’d cut

I don’t think IW was overly “depressing,” but it did feel long and kind of a drag in the midsection

    NREqxl5.jpg
it was the smallest on the list but
Pluto was a planet and I'll never forget

The main thing with Endgame is I have already pre-cried at the scene where Steve Rogers, bloodied but not beaten, stands defiant against Thanos and says he can do this all day

Just went ahead and got it out of the way now when it definitely 100% happens

My problem with Infinity War is the things I'm pretty sure they wanted me to think were fun were mostly offputting to outright upsetting. There are maybe three moments in that entire movie that I can pinpoint as genuine honest-to-god good times and everything else is just tired or gross.

Also it was too long. No movie should be that long, even if I hadn't hated most of what was happening I would not have been able to hold my attention for that long. Like, I loved the Last Jedi but hoo boy was it tough to stay focused the whole time. It's just too much.
