Silent Voice was initially a really good one-shot, it was part of a contest and the winner got serialized. So it's great that it won, but also it kinda felt like the author had already told the story she wanted to tell, and a lot of the later pacing and stuff struggles because of it. Like there's still good individual sequences and stuff, but it definitely goes too long and gets too distracted with side characters.
Oh, also that's the manga which had to fight a lawsuit to get published - a conservative group sued because (they said) its protagonist being a bully advocated bullying, and it shouldn't be published in a kids magazine. Meanwhile the Japanese Federation of the Deaf is like endorsing the manga as talking about issues that deaf people can face in Japanese society, which has such an emphasis on fitting in and being part of the group. Of course that's why the group was complaining in the first place - not really that it advocated bullying, but that it admitted that bullying exists at all. The publisher fought it in court and won, but it took a while, which delayed serialization.

Thanks Kana. I love hearing the background behind famous works. That does make a lot of sense: I kinda felt the movie was about 20 minutes too long, but I was also making the issue much worse by pausing it and studying the Japanese as it was going on. I think the emotions hit me a little harder this morning, so I might get a bit more out of it by giving it another shot. I’m going to try to convince my sister to watch it with me when I see her next week.
