I'm pretty sure everyone thinks the RL is bad. But WotC made it clear the last time outside speculators riding a bitcoin boom exploded the prices of the market that they have no intention of ever even mentioning that list again.
It's unfortunate. It really is the most fun "most of the time."
SCG has been looking to remove Legacy for like 3 years though. I just didn't ever expect they'd just hard drop it because it's been very successful very consistently.
for me this means I'll have to go to more local legacy events I guess, but I'm pretty lucky with access to weekly events, plus one of the stores in the suburbs here does a monthly competitive series feeding into year end championships and they've recognized that Legacy is a huge draw for them and i think like 1/3 of their events next year are still legacy. they just replaced most of the standards with pioneer.
something that is also a low-key hit to legacy, i think, is that it's a format with a very specific power level. and the more you introduce players to formats with different power levels, the more likely it is that players are like "oh this is roughly about the power level i like playing with"
for me, for example, i was introduced to the game through standard play, and standard play became the level of game power i generally liked. limited, too weak. legacy? eeeh too strong.
Can't really be sad for a format that's barrier to entry is "kept cards you had when you were 7"
There are several fun and playable legacy decks that cost less than a tier 1 standard deck. If you can afford to play magic in general, you can get into legacy. And if you want to Really Get Serious About Legacy, you could play a budget tier deck while investing in a good deck over time. That's one of the nice things about the format, values don't shift a ton. Put a couple hundred dollars into dual lands and you can get a couple hundred back out of them if you need to. It's a cool format, and also really fun to watch even if you don't want to participate.
I assume pioneer had something to do with this. I’m sure this was only a matter of time but I bet a new format that people are very excited for pushed it up.
So it seems like there's a vocal minority of people that think the Mystery Boosters are trash because they're not like some stacked reprint set, but looking around Twitter I've seen reprints of (spoilered for people that want to try and draft/open the packs blind):

That "Not for constructed play" on the test cards is so getting ignored for our kitchen table games. Hopefully they're not too broken!

Some of them are fine, they just do weird stuff that they probably couldn't get through design for whatever reason. On one end there's a 3BG 4/4 Flying Vigilance that's one big Great Designer Search joke, on the other you have an enchantment that creates Forest tokens every turn.
Some other stuff is kind of bad - One With Death is B for "You lose the game.", and completely unplayeable without combo setups (e.g. Hive Mind).
The main problem cards are the ones that are really overpowered and mostly exist as jokes, e.g. the Eldrazi Sliver that makes your Eldrazi Slivers and gives your Slivers Annihilator 1.
There's also a handful of cards that are just there to test the waters, like a variety of dual lands. (One enters untapped if you have creatures from the other three colors, one taps before your combat step, one enters untapped and gives a poison counter when you tap it...)
There's also a few classics, like Throat Wolf and Barry's Land.

There's a version of this going to stores? I thought it was just cons. Who is going to buy packs from a set that has over 1000 cards and at what price? Without a super unique thing like the playtest cards or the assurance that you'll get a mythic or something in every pack it just seems like you're unlikely to get anything worth the price.
But that's true of all boosters. It just seems even higher variance.

Like my shop always does chaos draft in the thursday between a prerelease and the actual release the next friday and it tends to get 20-30 people each set. They'd definitely get turn out for "hey it's chaos draft the set here's release weekends drafts." I don't know if there's much individual demand unless also people like drafting with their friends but like, I'm ok with a product in that niche and I don't feel like I have to drop money on a big holiday release like a master's thing
I think they're still kinda neat as like a variant of chaos draft, but yeah, not having the playtest cards is a big fuckin' downer.
As someone who likes collecting the more unusual Magic stuff (Un-sets, Planechase, Vanguard, etc.) I was super excited to get all these test cards. But if they are convention-only, that probably means there are only a few copies of each one in the world, which likely puts them out of my price range, even if they aren’t legal in any format.

Those cheeky fuckers have a new MTG arena event that is Momir's Madness.
Except with Oko.
All the creatures you make are 3/3 elks in addition to their other types.

If even SCG doesn't think paper Legacy is viable anymore that's uh, that's a bad sign for paper Legacy.
This suucccckckkkkkkksss. Legacy SCG's both to play in and to watch were unbeatable.
It's unfortunate. It really is the most fun "most of the time."

I'm super sad to see SCG legacy coverage go.
Bloom Tender ($50)
Kolaghan's Command ($25)
Tireless Tracker ($13)
Path to Exile ($7 uncommon)
Baleful Strix ($5 uncommon)
Fatal Push ($5 uncommon)
Inquisition of Kozilek ($5 uncommon)
Skullclamp ($5 uncommon)
And that's just from my very limited sightings on Twitter. The full list comes out on Monday.
Yeah... the full list.
I... I hadn't seen that. Goddamn.
Yes.
Also since I'm here:
"Each pack has 2 C/U of each color, 1 Multi C/U, 1 artifact/land C/U, 1 playtest card, 1 M15 forward R/M and one pre-M15 card in its original frame."
What's C/U mean?
Magic Online - Bertro
Oh right! I was overthinking it, thanks.

It's a varied bunch. Here's a visual spoiler of the known ones so far.
But that's true of all boosters. It just seems even higher variance.
Then who fuckin cares, frankly.
One With Death is also a reference to what might be the worst Magic card ever printed
I think they're still kinda neat as like a variant of chaos draft, but yeah, not having the playtest cards is a big fuckin' downer.
Or the best card ever printed? Eh?
No but actually One With Nothing is terrible BUT it's the best kind of terrible because it's a fun puzzle to try and make work.
I put it in a madness deck and it worked one time but that one time was amazing.

Throat Wolf
Ben Beliweiss says what we already knew.
Though Cyrus Corman-Gill made a good point about the format:
