These travis takes still blowing my mind. Literally every SW author does this stuff. They all had their pet characters and settings.

Traviss had some laughable napkin math about the Clone Wars that had it that there were 1000 Clone troopers total or something bizarre like that. When people pointed out that couldn't possibly be right, it got so heated she eventually called her detractors Nazis. And then got fired before completing her series. You must have been really insulated to hear about none of this.

Unrelated to Star Wars stuff about Traviss:
She also wrote books about Gears of War that were not too bad at first but then you could see the symptoms of what happened in Star Wars happening again. She got so wrapped up in her bonds of comradrie themes that she... forgot the basic facts of the storyline. So she wrote a direct Gears 1 prequel where Hoffman still respects and loves Marcus after his court martial and is doing his best to keep him alive. Which is a FASCINATING revisionist take on the game story that begins with Marcus having been deliberately left for dead in the prison when even other prisoners had been rescued from the Locust invasion. Dom breaks orders and goes alone to save Marcus before it's too late and they need Gears so badly Command just allows it and reintegrates Marcus into the military. When Hoffman sees him, he all but spits in his face.

Then there's her Halo stuff which seems really sympathetic and impressed by Naval Intelligence which is unquestionably the most evil human force in the Halo canon.
The prequel book sucked, but the other four Gears of War book she wrote (and Gears 3) were pretty great.

for starters, the whole EU is bad anyway, so i wasn't reading it to begin with

I love that Disney's new jam has been dunking on that exact idea.

I'd argue at this point, Disney has bad films making trouble for a strong EU.

What in Disney canon is actually bad? A mediocre novel here and there? Comics have been pretty consistently strong, afaik, games are good, Mandalorian and Rebels are excellent. Resistance isn't great entertainment if you're older than eight sometimes, but it doesn't do anything egregious to canon.

well, Solo was shit, but luckily it was shit in such a boring way that it didn't even actually introduce anything new to canon, and can be completely ignored.

Solo is mostly fine but the way it goes straight down a checklist of every bit of backstory alluded to in the original trilogy is pretty annoying. I think the only thing they hold off on is showing han dumping jabba's goods before going to mos eisley

could have probably stood to be a bit more clear that L3 was dead and lives on in a less, uh, literal sense inside the falcon

because as is, it kind of seems like she just gets uploaded to the ship and then everyone is okay with gambling for her, which, is pretty bad when like 20 minutes ago she was leading a robot revolt and dying tragically. Which is also something that maybe could've been treated less as a joke! I dunno! There's already a lot of slavery in star wars and i was kind of expecting disney to never address it again instead of leaning all the way in! Weird choices, disney!

also the not-stinger is bad and interrupts the flow of the finale. I kind of like the preceding character beat, but then whoops there's just a shitty marvel credits advertisement that interrupts the ending!

i went to see it with a friend that I go to see most of these films with, and overall we had a good time, but we also just spent like an hour or two afterwards, wondering why the tone and plot were Like That and what the actual, intended read of that film is

to be a little more positive, I liked that Han and Chewy just get along without much encouragement, I was so prepared for all Han's dialogue to be awful snark and then the film to be like "oh they're friends!" an hour later. Having them just be pals was weirdly nice and refreshing. More of that please.

Was it ever hard confirmed that the problem with Lord and Millar was the comedy? Because I have a theory that the marauder guys didn't turn out to be Rebels at the end. I think they ended up having a very different ending that didn't end up having anything to do with the larger SW story.

Chewbacca should have been killed by a rock, firmly establishing Solo as an alternate timeline, or alternatively revealing that Chewbacca was replaced by an impersonator wookie that was never friends with Yoda and did not fight in the clone wars

The failure of Solo is that it lacks imagination and it's a mashup of several incomplete film ideas. Even if Disney required Solo to have a big nostalgia hook from the OT and not be a completely original story, then make a film about how Han and Chewie met, or about how Han acquired the Falcon, or a smuggling film involving the Kessel Run. You don't make a mess of a film about all 3 at once. Keep the film focused about one backstory item, maybe you add a stinger at the end to tease one of the other plots in a subsequent film, but that's it.

Imagine the Star Wars equivalent of Maverick, where Han and Chewie just have some fun little adventure just trying to get to the big Sabacc tournament and win the Falcon at the end. Or heck, you could take the existing heist plot with the Kessel Run, but do it with Han and Chewie already together and flying the Falcon. That way you spend more time on the actual main story instead of wasting time trying to tick boxes off all those other backstory points.

Just remember that half the people you meet are below average intelligence.
