in what world did rogue one didn't do well? it made a billion and is projected to box office more than TRoS. Solo tanking was the nail. at least they are making a new series with Cassian.

That series is a mistake. That character, if you must do a prequel, needs to be really fucking dark, and I don't think Disney has the stones for it. He signs up for the suicide mission because he's full to the brim with regrets. Regret is a great story hook, but it's tough matter that some suit is going to mangle in an attempt to make the show more mass appealing.

Alternatively, maybe the show is going to be the Better Call Saul to Rogue One's Breaking Bad.

This Mandalorian series they're making is a mistake. A faceless character with no ties to anyone we know from the universe? They're never going to be able to make that appeal to most people.

I'm not going to judge these things until they've been made. Then I'll judge the shit out of them and say everything they did wrong.

Is Baby Yoda going to be in the Cassian series? I'd watch that. They already dropped like $5M on the puppet, might as well stuff it into everything.

Eh, I'm sure they'll just make it wildly tonally inconsistent and move on.

Past performance is no predictor of future results. My favorite SW stuff from the past 5 years is a spin-off movie (RO), kid's TV show (Rebels) and vidyagame (Fallen Order). Each of those media categories has also had colossal stinkers within the same time-frame as well.

There is literally no way to predict the success/failure or quality of any given Star Wars project merely based on what type of thing it is. It could be great, or it could be shit.

I thought it was going to be trash based on the premise alone, and didn't pay any attention to it until after it came out and people started talking about how good the first episode was.

It needed /s tags, but I'm sure we can find doomsaying about Mandalorian from ahead of its release.

And the buzz depends on the audience you're talking about. Safe to say that if you're reading this topic, the familiarity with SW is somewhat higher than the national average.
Assuming the bulk of Star Wars audience is still just the movies, the buzz from the name alone was "The Whatalorian?"

And to a lot of people, anyone wearing that style of armor is automatically "Boba Fett".
the history of how a one note character became so popular is intriguing.
he has been a fan favorite design wise for star wars fans. so much so they got him out of the sarlacc pit and built a warrior race that uses the armor.

I always found that those who were star wars fan were all hyped for mandalorian due to EU and video games and they all wanted a boba fett movie for a long while. it only ever the casual fans that was in question.

Boba Fett was beloved based on nothing at all but cool armor. People wanted to know more about the Mandalorians since Empire. The show was such a slam dunk, Disney used it to launch its streaming service. You don't need to be a prophet to predict that profit.

All I'm saying is, Cassian is not that. He's an interesting character with the potential to tell a heartbreaking story. But he's not a lodestone that draws the imagination. They can't just throw him into a random western and call it a day.

I am thinking so hard steam is coming out my ears trying to determine if
there's any way Nick Nolte could reprise Kuill as the, whatever, facilities guy at the orphanage Cassian grows up in, teaching young Andor how to lie and how to read a situation and how to play the long game.
You must think always not of what they say, the Imperials, but of what they want. What they would do. I have spoken.

This was a pretty good read through of the Trevorrow script. I actually ended up listening to the whole thing. I don't know if it would've been a perfect ending, but it sounds pretty good.

So I'm rewatching Rogue One now in my opening move for rewatching the franchise in a Machete-style order... itself mostly as a "spoonful of sugar" bid to rewatch the prequels without immediately giving up.

Anyway Rogue One opens up so well. I love Krennic. He's perfectly mediocre. His flash Imperial attire and Death Troopers just underline how much less of a man he is than Galen before either of them even speak.

One of my favorite details about Krennic is how his cloak looks. When an Imperial has a cloak it's this perfectly billowing bit of evil but Krennic's? You can see the seams on it, the material has some crinkling to it so it never lays quite right, and basically it looks like he really wanted a cloak so his mom made him one. It's just a nice little thing that adds to his overwhelming wannabe mediocrity.

    Well,
Ahsoka's voice is part of the crowd pushing Rey onward, so she presumably reclaims the title (and dies) at some point. The Jedi from the Fall of the Republic being dogmatic shits with a flawed understanding of the Force and, uh, basic human decency needn't poison the title forever.

Eh, I don't think that is Ahsoka retaking the title, and I would say that there's very little reason for her to do so especially if she did come out and claim it, there is apparently almost nobody who would understand what it means based on what we see in The Mandalorian.

I don't think the Force cares what you call yourself, Ahsoka is undoubtedly aligned with the light side of the Force and that is why she is appears there. The Jedi are an interpretation of the best way to be in the light side, but probably not the only one that's compatible with becoming a Force ghost or being a light side practitioner of the Force.

Is there a non-spoilery guide to Clone Wars, in terms of what's important to watch and what's dispensable/filler for someone catching up?

I'm impressed by the quality of Rebels, but I've heard that CW has more ups and downs in terms of quality and canonical relevance.

IMO, if you were able to handle the quality dips in Rebels, CW should hold up as well.

If an episode looks like it's going to feature Padme or Jar-Jar heavily, that's a pretty good indicator that it's a weaker episode. But even then, I don't remember any of those episodes being downright awful, and at least one Jar-Jar episode is just excellent.

I did a quick search, this is a list I mostly agree with - in watch order,
S3E01: Clone Cadets (yes, start with the first episode of season 3)

    Season 1 mostly sucked.
    S1E05: Rookies
    S1E09: Cloak of Darkness
    S1E12: Lair of Grievous
    S1E19: Storm over Ryloth
    S1E20: Innocents of Ryloth
    S1E21: Liberty on Ryloth

    Season 2 was pretty good.
    S2E01: Holocron Heist
    S2E02: Cargo of Doom
    S2E03: Children of the Force
    S2E05: Landing at Point Rain
    S2E06: Weapons Factory
    S2E07: Legacy of Terror
    S2E08: Brain Invaders
    S2E12: The Mandalore Plot
    S2E13: Voyage of Temptation
    S2E14: Duchess of Mandalore
The watchlist I'm cribbing from recommends the Zillo eps before Landing at Point Rain, but I can't remember a reason to skip around that much
    S2E18: The Zillo Beast
S2E19: The Zillo Beast Strikes Back
    S2E20: Death Trap
    S2E21: R2 Come Home
    S2E22: Lethal Trackdown

The first half of S3 is mostly bad, the second half is mostly good. Note that we go back and watch a season 1 ep here before Hunt for Ziro so we know what's going on.
    S3E02: ARC Troopers
    S1E22: Hostage Crisis
    S3E09: Hunt for Ziro
    S3E10: Heroes on Both Side
    S3E11: Pursuit of Peace
    S3E12: Nightsisters
    S3E13: Monster
    S3E14: Witches of the Mist
    S3E18: The Citadel
    S3E19: Counter Attack
    S3E20: Citadel Rescue

Season 4 is almost as good as Season 2, but you can still skip the first bit.
    S4E07: Darkness on Umbara
    S4E08: The General
    S4E09: Plan of Dissent
    S4E10: Carnage of Krell
    S4E14: A Friend In Need
    S4E15: Deception
    S4E16: Friends and Enemies
    S4E17: The Box
    S4E18: Crisis on Naboo
    S4E19: Massacre
    E4E20: Bounty
    S4E21: Brothers
    S4E22: Revenge

There are three lines in season 5 you're gonna want to watch, just skip the first episode until later. The middle bit is real meh though.
S5E02: A War on Two Fronts
    S5E03: Front Runners
    S5E04: The Soft War
    S5E05: Tipping Points
(now go back and watch the first episode, then skip to S5E14)
    S5E01: Revival
    S5E14: Eminence
    S5E15: Shades of Reason
    S5E16: The Lawless
    S5E17: Sabotage
S5E18: The Jedi Who Knew Too Much
    S5E19: To Catch a Jedi
    S5E20: The Wrong Jedi

Season 6 starts strong and ends strong. Like S5, skip the middle.
    S6E01: The Unknown
    S6E02: Conspiracy
    S6E03: Fugitive
    S6E04: Orders
    S6E10: The Lost One
    S6E11: Voices
    S6E12: Destiny
    S6E13: Sacrifice

So the "shot version" of Clone Wars is still, like, 24 hours of TV. ...also I guess that really only cuts out half of the episodes. eesh.

So I finally saw Rise of Skywalker. It was... a Star Wars movie. That's pretty much it. It wasn't a particularly good Star Wars movie, nor a particularly bad Star Wars movie. It just was a Star Wars movie.

It feels like Disney told JJ to make the most harmless, least controversial, white-bread-dipped-in-water Star Wars movie possible. Every obstacle is resolved almost instantly in the most obvious way possible, every challenged is faced directly and overcome immediately, every point that needed to be addressed is addressed in a linear fashion as if marking them down a checklist. And I can understand why Disney would want to do that - they invested billions into Star Wars, buying the rights, building theme parks, hotels, cruise ships, so they want, ney need, Star Wars to reach as wide an audience as possible. The last thing they want is a Star Wars that polarizes and controversies and wipes out a portion of their clientelle and revenue source. But in creating this Star Wars, they avoided polarizing and controversing by such a wide margin that they also missed challenging, thought-provoking, and interesting and settled into bland and ordinary.

I don't hate it. I don't love it. I don't see how anyone could hate it or love it, or feel any strong emotion towards it at all. It is a Star Wars movie that seems to have been crafted specifically to avoid generating any strong emotions in its viewers.

    EDIT:
In fact, the more I think about it, the more Rise of Skywalker makes me like Last Jedi more. There are still things I hated about Last Jedi - everything about the casino planet and Rose preventing Finn from destroying the canon and saving everyone out of love spring to mind - but there are things I loved about Last Jedi - especially the message that the Force isn't just for Jedi and Sith and Skywalkers, it's for everybody. Last Jedi made me feel things, both positive and negative. Rise of Skywalker left me feeling like I'd just seen a Star Wars movie, and that was it.

With RoS, Disney took a safety in order to not spoil the brand and future project. They didn't want to take a risk and end it like Game of Thrones leaving tons of people uninterested in future GoT projects.

And in doing so they made almost all the same mistakes as the end of GoT and came very close to doing exactly that. If Star Wars didn't already have cultural momentum, and if The Mandelorian didn't come out, this might be the case.

I have a feeling people will very quickly start ignoring this movies existence. It's the second worst Star Wars movie (fuckin' AoTC).
