I felt like the structure of Slay the Spire really limited your freedom of play so I beat it but didn't play it much after that. Unlike Binding of Isaac, where you can be screwed by rng but if you're good enough you could beat it with zero items anyway (I am not good enough)
You technically could defeat Isaac with no items, but for most of the various last bosses it would take a million years to do so even if you played perfectly with no damage upgrades.
I wonder what the cash flow is like for No Man's Sky. Do these ongoing content drops drive substantial new sales? Or is it still them just doing make goods for the initial negative blowback while they coast off the strong original sales with a relatively small team? The first few big updates felt like the latter, but they keep coming even after the tone around the game has largely changed

Yeah. I've seen developer interviews where, between the Sony investment and the increased sales every update, they could keep making this game in perpetuity.

it... was an interesting idea that was way too far ahead of the technology it was built with. It would be interesting to see someone revisit the concept with today's advances in natural language processing.

Besides it doing phenomenal when it came out (despite the rage and disappointment) they've earned a ton of goodwill from people and vastly improved the game (for 99.99999% of people) and keep selling well.
And they've also said that they're still small and will kind of just keep banging at this game until they stop having fun ideas for it and it's kinda cool that they're at the place where they can do that and not just have to do NMS 2 or something they're less interested in that could possibly fail just because they need money. They get to keep playing with the toy they like and that's rare in video games, I think.

Woah, I thought I was tripping because I was thinking, "Is that a Homeworld game?" But no, I was thinking of Hardware: Shipbreakers, which later became Homeworld: Shipbreakers and then Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak when they got the license to make it an official Homeworld prequel.
... and then I see it's actually being made by the exact same developer so that's wild. I guess they really, really like the name!

So I've been playing Arkham Knight, because I got it for free a long time ago on PC with a graphics card or whatever, but never even installed it because it was a broken nightmare on release
Now, like two computers later and with a bunch of complimentary DLC, I decided heck with it, I wanna be Batman for a bit
Turns out the game is really quite good! I mean the story's trash, but it's well-executed trash (with a few awful exceptions). Rocksteady are clearly far better storytellers than they are writers--all the little details they include in gorgeously rendered environments, the graphical tricks they pull to put you in different environments in the blink of an eye. If someone actually wrote a good story for them, they'd knock it out of the park! And the gameplay is as smooth as it's ever been, though with the expansion of options it feels extremely bloated. I don't need half of the abilities I've got to complete the vast majority of the game. So much of it just feels unnecessary, purely there for style or variety. But it's sort of impressive the amount of controls they manage to give you at every moment, and somehow make the game understandable at all! Even the Batmobile stuff is fun, purely in how it feels to drive around and plow through obstacles. The car chases are some of my favorite parts! It feels like Mad Max more than the Mad Max game does in some ways! It doesn't fit at all with the rest of the game, of course, particularly the borderline nonsense drone-tank combat sections, but even those are fun enough moment-to-moment, dodging shells and shooting your own like it's a modern puzzle-game take on Combat
But the Riddler stuff
Oh lord the Riddler stuff is bad
I mean that's not entirely true, the actual puzzles and riddles they give you are fun to figure out and deal with, but the races? Holy shit the races are awful. Like next-level bad. Like I'm amazed that something so monumentally poor actually exists in a triple-A video game release! It's unbelievable that anyone played it at any point during development and went "this is fun, the player will enjoy this." Plus even the drone-tank stuff makes more sense on a narrative level than Riddler somehow assembling all these insane deathtraps in Gotham's sewers or whatever the hell
Anyway if you can get the whole game for like ten bucks it's pretty cool. It runs like butter on a modern PC, with no crashes or glitches that I've seen, still looks extremely impressive on a technical level, and the DLC feels a lot better when it's integrated into the game from the start and you're not paying thirty bucks to get a couple hours worth of content. I can't imagine how disappointed people were with that stuff when it first came out
Woah, I thought I was tripping because I was thinking, "Is that a Homeworld game?" But no, I was thinking of Hardware: Shipbreakers, which later became Homeworld: Shipbreakers and then Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak when they got the license to make it an official Homeworld prequel.
... and then I see it's actually being made by the exact same developer so that's wild. I guess they really, really like the name!
I will now choose to believe that the impetus for this game came from someone misunderstanding what the earlier game was about and the devs liking the idea anyway.
I agree with basically all those words about Arkham Knight.
One of the weirder decisions is that there's a bunch of DLC Batmobiles, but you can't use them in the main game because they don't transform. Instead you get to use them on more shitty racetracks.

it is Extremely Videogames, like they knew that adding a time attack race mode was some low-hanging fruit since they already had the tech for the tank done
It gives you another 15 icons to put on the map to impress reviewers and pads out gameplay by another 3-4 hours
but how do you justify batman going to a racetrack with a tank to burn some rubber, while Gotham is under siege by mercenary troopers and literally about to explode?
the easiest way to justify any abstract time-stuffing activity in the arkham games is to go with
a) vr training
or
b) the riddler did it
the riddler is real smart and is obsessed with challenges even if they aren't particularly clever or brain-teasers in any way and he also has apparently unlimited resources and an army of robots? why shouldn't he have made a giant network of underground race tunnels that nobody found out about until tonight
look we're out of time we need you working on the gamescom demo so just finish this up and maybe we can tweak the dialog or something so it makes more sense in the day 1 patch

I would have loved to see what some of the conversations between the directors and the designers were for the batmobile
like I know some of the idea was mandated by WB interactive because they saw it as a next-gen feature, so rocksteady didn't really have a whole lot of choice
but the actual conversations of "why does batman need a car, he can already grapple/glide/fly" and "how do we give the player a tank that has missiles and a cannon and a gatling gun but also fulfill the other WB mandate that Batman Can't Kill Anyone", and "how do we make it so the player doesn't immediately abandon the batmobile and just forget it exists" would have been really amazing to hear
honestly the solution they came up for "how do we make the batmobile drive like a car but not make the combat bits feel like shit" was to make the car morph into a tank, so that you get strafing controls but also analog steering and acceleration, and that was pretty clever! a lot of arkham is navigable by tank and it really doesn't break or get too janky that often

No Man's Sky sold EXTREMELY well (which is part of the reason why the backlash was so widespread). It basically gave Hello Games the capital to do whatever the fuck they want for years to come.

The very first real "puzzle" in Arkham Knight was using the car to jump across rooftops and align a set of radio dishes so the Worlds Greatest Detective could detect that the chemicals were made at the chemical factory.
I'm not sure if that says something about Arkham Knight in general, or just something about my reaction to Arkham Knight in general.

According to the now removed leak the game is releasing on the Epic Games Store and TaleWorlds Entertainment's own store too.
I didn't get far enough in that game to get the car, I don't think
I will say that the notion of a car that transforms into a tank is both very stupid and very good
I think you get the batmobile like... less than an hour into Arkham Knight? It's part of the tutorial, pretty much

I don't make first-day purchases very often, but that's gonna be one of them. It'll help make up for the fact that I bought the original for like five bucks and then played it for several hundred hours.
Plus, the final version of the first game pretty much was Early Access levels of jank, so it seems fitting.

I kind of want a Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf game
Just a game where you watch two people ripping each other into shreds
You can interject, but all of your dialogue options are almost assuredly the worst possible thing to say
Or you can explore their house and pour yourself another drink
