You don't get an opportunity to grab any items from the boss arena after beating El Gigante, apparently. I'd recommend taking quick circuit around to grab everything when you feel like you're close to the end.

That's the ship from Resi 5 right?

Damn, 7 hours for a first play for a $10 DLC is healthy. That's awesome.

Does Separate Ways unlock anything in the main game? I'll take any option to make my final S+ run for a platinum easier.

Is it just me or is the HDR awful for the dlc? I don’t know if it’s the time of day, but my god it’s like super black darkness or super bright light with no in between, no matter what setting I’ve tried on my xbox

I think the big vo controversy is more mixed for me, she sounds really good sometimes, I like the kind of muted all business professional vibe, rather than the over the top femme fatale. But sometimes I can barely hear her and the context calls for more urgency in her voice, I think that’s a direction issue

Also some of the lines in this dlc are almost as cheesy as original RE4

I haven’t played the game since it came out so the evade prompt is confusing the shit out of me, are some moves neither parry or evade? Like you have to run or something? Like grabs?

Ada only sounds good when she's talking to herself. Every conversation she sounds bored with the bad writing.

    Bedroom scene
Waking up to Wesker after her collapse with "to what do I owe this pleasure" delivered in the most deadpan manner was so awkward to me.

I'm trying to get S+ on Separate Ways professional and it is kicking my ass.

Finished a boss fight, got killed by random villagers before saving and now can't beat the boss again.

    I gave up.

To get S+ on any difficulty, you have to prioritise when to run to the next event or door instead of fighting, but also making sure to get enough cash to upgrade your weapons for boss fights.

It's tougher than I thought, even with bonus weapons, so I gave up and tried s+ on hardcore.

I gave up on that too because I'm just not quick enough.

It looks like what I should do is get S+ on lower difficulties to unlock accessories which give perks.

This dlc is lucky I enjoy it so much.

it wound up being much much harder than i expected given the better ratio of time limit vs save quantity.

i burned a save early right after chapter 1 just so i didn't have to rerun the opening boss a million times trying to get through the fairly lengthy starting chunk up to the second boss. gigante pretty much bottomed out my resources and i only just barely had enough to get through knights + hedge maze. needed to burn off an extra save between the two fights, so i had to do most of chapter 5/6 in one big run, which i fucked up a couple times. there's a great skip for the turret bit, but it took some experimentation for me to get it right and i forgot how QTEs work in this game in the lab, which is easily the most embarrassing failure of the bunch.

i think the only segment i didn't have to run over and over was the very last one, which is pretty straightforward with the sweeper and a rocket as long you're not butting up against the time limit. overall, at least with the guide i was using, the DLC seemed to demand much cleaner execution and lots of precision shooting under pressure compared to vanilla. it was incredibly stressful.

unlike base game, i think you're better off doing a hardcore practice run for the chicken hat.

i'm trying to wrap up all my remaining resident evil Goals before halloween so i can say i did it all within one year

managed to knock out No Way Out scenario in RE2R in like six or so tries for the last trophy, which i was worried was gonna be a real pain.

i guess i should start REmake soon

  • Raybies666Raybies666 Registered User regular
I'm terrible at those re2 scenarios, I just can't do them.

In better news, I failed at s+ separate ways on assisted difficult by 3 mins, but it looks like I'll get s+ on standard with it least 20 mins to spare!

That bear hat gives better knife damage, so that might speed up boss fights. Fingers crossed.

Finally got around to the resident evil village dlc, and while the dlc is fine, aside from some atrocious design in some of the scripted counters (like my god, the escape form the doll house sequence might as well be called “what not to do when designing a linear scripted escape sequence) quite spooky and enjoyable but clearly very simple, I really enjoy Rose as a protagonist. At the very least she’s miles better than her weirdo dad. Shame it seems like the dlc wasn’t received well, so likely rose won’t be in any future games, at least not as a main

The gameplay of the dlc was rough to ok, but I really enjoyed the story and the kind of Alice in wonderland v the wicked witch thing

For me she struck a good middle ground between badass commando who’s seen it all before and complete weirdo dumbass average joe nobody who somehow can fight monsters and zombies with ease

I loved in the dlc when the puppet woman is messing with her by making her relive her childhood traumas through scary doll dioramas and rose is like “yeah yeah I get it my childhood sucked, fuck you”

She has a great balance between taking things seriously when it’s called for but also having a sense of humour and awareness about herself. Well, for a resident evil character anyway. She could’ve easily been a sappy woe is me “cursed child, stay away from me I’m dangerous!” cliche that was meek and mopey, but she’s much more confident and interesting than that, while still wishing she had a normal life.

I can see having a resident evil protagonist with powers could be controversial, but I dunno I’m up for it as long as the powers adhere to the same kind of conserve and scavenge survival horror gameplay as every other weapon

Hate-playing games is a real thing.

And sadly, the more the industry shifts towards live service and perpetual business models, the more prevalent hate-playing will become.

The release of Resident Evil 2 (remake, obviously) on PC Game Pass (technically, the "Xbox on PC" version) has console/PC save compatibility. I think it's the only release of that game that has it.

Unfortunately, even without having to start completely from scratch, I couldn't quite work up the urge to continue with Leon's Second Playthrough. I'm glad I finished the game (I had a better time after leaving the RCPD Headquarters), but boy, is it hard for me to get back into the classic RE "puzzles, backtracking, and scarce ammo" formula in the 2020s.

  • Ninja Snarl PNinja Snarl P My helmet is my burden. Ninja Snarl: Gone, but not forgotten.Registered User regular
The only struggle for me with the RE2 remake is having to slog through the sewers. And I mean you literally slog through them, moving at that snail's pace is just maddening. Plus the sewers are a fair ways into the game and the slow movement speed makes dealing with the enemies aggravating and touchy, so if you're doing challenge stuff the sewers can be a real pain in the ass.

I recently got RE2 Remake and had a pretty good time with it. Except I hated the zombies. They artificially react to you in a very video game way, swaying as soon as your crosshair moves over their head, bobbing and weaving to dash towards you at exactly the right time. They also take a ridiculous amount of bullets to put down, and require random luck or expending even more valuable ammo to keep down for good.

The other enemy types were all fine. Although the bosses seemed to auto balance themselves to take exactly as much ammo to kill as whatever you brought.

RE2 uses the whole "how well are you doing" system for determining how many bullets a zombie takes.

  • Ninja Snarl PNinja Snarl P My helmet is my burden. Ninja Snarl: Gone, but not forgotten.Registered User regular
It's a fine system for a first playthrough. Take your time, shoot all the zombies, be a little tight on ammo early on and then still end up swimming in bullets later. I'm pretty fine with shots doing an indeterminate amount of damage rather than doing X hitpoints of damage, which feels far more video-gamey to me than not being sure how many 9mm rounds to the head will take a zombie down. Bullets in real life are unpredictable too.

And RE2, like the bulk of decent RE games, is also designed for speedrunning and that mostly involves avoiding fighting. Once you've got a couple playthroughs under your belt and know some shortcuts and codes, you just breeze right past the zombies or, at a minimum, know how efficiently dispatch the ones you do choose to fight.

And generally as a rule, you want to get the legshots first, not the headshots. Legshot makes them stumble and kneel predictably, so you can either run by or kill them easier while at a safe distance.

  • ReynoldsReynolds Gone Fishin'Registered User regular
As I've played RE4 a million times, shooting them in the leg was definitely my initial response. It didn't seem to do what I was expecting, so after a couple of zombies I just stuck to aiming for the head. Maybe I just got spectacularly unlucky somehow (which wouldn't surprise me).

I beat it three times in a row, so I'm going to take a break before seeing what all the bonus content is about.

Fairly certain the even in RE4 that getting them to stagger is a minimum damage threshold, but it's a fixed value per difficulty so it's more predictable in that a weak gun will always take 3-4 shots, a strong one is a single shot, etc. I vaguely remember it being less of a given in RE2 remake because of the sliding damage, but it should always be fewer pistol shots to stagger zombies than to kill them. And I think it also gets easier to stagger them with stronger pistols.

Pretty sure it's not RE4's thing where you can get a whole reliable rhythm of legshot-kick kneeling enemy-repeat, but RE4 is way more action-oriented and arcade-y.

I think run an and b are also pretty different in ammo resources just by giving you a gun that doesn’t use normal handgun ammo.

  • ReynoldsReynolds Gone Fishin'Registered User regular
I definitely wasn't a fan of that, or some of the other gun/ammo choices.
