They have raised almost two million dollars for rebuilding, and were still able to maintain summer programs despite the loss and the pandemic.
Ya I got a letter from them about a week ago. Was a bit of refreshing good news in all the shit going on these days. Big thanks to @Poorochondriac for posting the information about MIGIZI in the thread and making me aware of their need.
On unfortunate relation between headline and title, we have "achksually, they are not real riots Drumph" and a real live version of the "this is fine" meme. From CNN:
i just don't get what that twitter poster is even going for
i can kinda see the "don't give them more gravity than they deserve" angle, but our situation now is that extremely powerful people can freely say shit that is objectively, verifiably false, and it only ever benefits them, this is even more prevalent than it's been in the entire history of governments lying to themselves and their people
the validity of the concept of police has been (correctly) called into question by a meaningful number of people, call it a friendly slapfight if you want, that shit is still a major symptom of how precarious the whole thing is
don't call it a house of cards, it's a thin cardboard structure
20 years now. And ny police called for a boycott of his concerts, didn't show up for their job at the gig in New York ranking members of the police called him dirtbag and homophobic slurs.
Edit: warning, original article from then has the actual slur.
Also note how the police complain that the song hurts the feelings of the shooters who are apparently still healing from getting away with murder scot free.
A popular tweet going around Democrat circles of "actually rioting is what Trump wants" that also implied it was just Russians rioting was from a Parisian woman and when pressed on French riots she said those were all of Russian origin too.
Apparently Russia has a lot more interest in racial justice and fair pay for firefighters then I thought!

Trump absolutely wants riots because it gives his fan clubs their own self-justification for violent action towards BLM supporters. With violence comes a media circus, and Trump loves himself some PT Barnum roleplaying.

The flipside of this is, of course, that if protests stop now, after his bluster and chest-thumping and National Guard/DHS deployments, he can claim that he tamed the beastly liberals.
He will spin anything positive/constructive as his, and anything negative as something only he can stop. It's what he does. Worrying about his "narrative" is so very stupid because he will invent a narrative. The protests aren't for him, they're for the local leaders that actually feel the pressure, that can actually enact local change.
(I know you probably know all this - not directing it at you, directing it at the argument in the abstract)

the media circus happens whether there's actual riots or not though. if there's for-real violence it just saves the press the trouble of either stretching the truth till it breaks or just making some shit up
this picture was taken during trump's inauguration. there was some scattered knocking over of shit, but no reasonable human could stretch that into Riots. all the same, a gaggle of photojournalists converged on like the one burning trash can they could find, because that's what they wanted to report on
Funny how every situation the people in power argue that action is pointless. If we increase minimum wage it’ll just cause inflation, if we start a new party it’ll just hamstring Leftists, if we tax the rich more we’ll actually get less tax revenue. If we continue to riot over the way people are treated the fascist strongman will win.
Weird that people in power claim any attempt to retake power from them will actually just cause us harm.
Weird.

I am deeply cynical that any local leaders can enact change unless a precinct is first burned down.
that's kinda the whole thing. the authorities don't see the massive fundamental injustices as anything to worry about until people start damaging property in protest
In terms of urban unrest this year we're still on the low end of the violence scale. A proper riot will leave half large sections of a city destroyed.
Also though it doesn't matter if folks riot. Riots are literally always a response to something. *cough*violence by the state*cough*
I am just marveling at how no matter the side they are on nearly everyone in the political class thinks that can get out of this without at least pretending they are going to fix things even a little bit. I’m looking between at that and the massive housing crisis that is already happening right now that they are equally ignoring.
These people are going to get half the goddamn country burned down and at no point are they going to realize they could have stopped it.

the bonus to them never realizing that they could've stopped it is they'll go to their deaths never understanding that it was their fault

I go between thinking people actually believe Russia is behind every leftist movement cause they can't fathom people actually being fed up in any way with the political system and them just saying that so they can disparage the protests they know have a point.

there's a lot of liberal folks who really are just not willing to entertain the idea that it's not just certain aspects of our country that are temporarily bad, nothing that couldn't be fixed with reforms if it wasn't for those dastardly republicans, it's the foundation of the whole thing that causes these problems, i think that's a lot of it. you raise a good point too about russia also being a convenient way to just not engage with shit they can't really argue against. russia's a good scapegoat for that because yeah, they did interfere in the '16 election (though not to the extent that it matters nearly as much as clinton running a terrible campaign), and there's a long history of american politicians using the russkies as a boogeyman to get rid of people they don't like
i love the shit you see floating around occasionally that has like trump's face photoshopped onto stalin's body from some old soviet propaganda. i find that level of unwillingness to understand what is actually happening to almost be admirable
Well I mean
Even up to like a year ago I was a pretty Centrist Democrat, patent pending
And now I'm signing up for the Socialist party and sending money to BLM-supporting lawyers
So uh
Thanks for the radicalization I guess there "Uncle" Joe?
look if we're gonna set a baseline for dodgy interrogation practises I personally would be delighted if the cops stopped at "using a fake skellington to scare those dastardly crims"
anyway you can get a patent on almost anything, it means nothing.
foreign policy i can kinda get, i was the same way. you don't think about it, there's no real disagreement in public discussion, you're aware that it's abstractly bad but it's not in the forefront and everyone says it's the cost of doing business
know i got into a shouting argument during the primary with my resistance lib mom
she seemed chiefly upset about the fact that people on twitter were too mean about not supporting medicare for all and climate stuff and even suggesting that not supporting those things might make you not a good person
i don't know how to square the "don't make me feel bad" and "these are urgent crises that destroy people's lives, and incrementalism and can-kicking is hurting real people"

it'd be a lot easier to stomach if liberals' goals were vaguely the same as ours and the differences of opinion were just how best to achieve them, but we can't agree on basic shit like "people shouldn't be financially fucked for the rest of their lives because they got cancer" and "using robots to bomb people in foreign countries is unwise"
lotta people genuinely believe that fukuyama end of history shit as the tower is falling down around their ears
