Valheim is a viking-themed procedural-generated exploring/building/survival game with monsters. You can play solo or with up to 10 other players at a time on a locally hosted or dedicated server. It's been in Early Access through Steam for a few weeks and has sold over 2 million copies in that time.
Its kind of like a Norse Minecraft, with slightly better (think PS2 era) graphics and less weird Redstone contraptions.
Happy they hit 2 mil sales already. They've got a decent road map set up.
My one wish, ok one and a half, is a craftable map table that you could interact with, maybe use some coal and sync maps.
The half is for the hoe to work better.
The trick with the hoe is that at some point that pile of dirt you were trying to level downwards won't budge until you hit it at least once with a pickaxe -- I wish they could somehow give a better visual indication of when this is the case, usually there is a bit of grey stone showing but it's not always true.
Game good but has a ton of annoying pain points. I wonder how much is intentional (non-ore teleportation and huge travel times is probably that) and how much needs some dev tweak (boss spawn locations, lack of sustainable food resources, general inventory cruft beyond weight limits)

So I have a nifty little trick for the first part, depending on how meta you like your gaming
Create a separate world where you stay in your home/vault.
Grab X ore from whatever world
Log out of world and into your home/vault world, drop off ore
Log back in to whatever world, portal
Log back to vault world and grab your ore
Log back in to the original world.
Not exactly the fastest fast travel but its an option

At that point it'd probably be just as well to dupe the ore infinitely with backup characters

We shamed a member of our crew last night for doing this. Totally against the spirit of how our group is playing this. (We're not looking things up, etc etc)
Transporting ore and the difficulties thereof are deeply ingrained in the game. Do you make a production facility near where you mine it, or do you try to haul it back to a central location? Decisions, decisions.
Anyway, this game ate the entire weekend for half a dozen people in our friend group, and it's been YEARS since that happened. It's so good, guys.
So not having played it and seeing one of milski's points, can you not like, make/grow a garden?
You can, but carrots and turnips are the only thing you can grow, and both of those require foraged goods to create better food with.
You can sustainably have honey, carrots, and tornps for your three food slots but that's much worse than having multiple kinds of cooked dish going and stamina management is a huge part of of game so you want good food.

You can also tame pigs and they will breed more. You'll need a lot of them as they don't breed that fast, but it works.
I'm not sure what you mean? Looks like you joined just fine. Check the game channel pinned messages
It just shows me a "messages failed to load" message and no member list.
That's really weird. Is your Discord up to date? Maybe try from web app or mobile?

I only get low on food when I neglect to hunt/gather for a while because I'm too focused on gathering other resources. If you're only sticking to one area and not exploring for new stuff, you're missing out!
Spent a few hours with this yesterday. Learned the basics, killed the first boss, took a raft trip aways up a river until I started seeing new enemies.
On the way back I saw...
a rather large ogre or giant or something emerge from the trees, walk along the river bank for a bit, and disappear back into the trees.
Pretty creepy in the fog! This game is pretty great, but its definitely a cold, lonely experience solo. Taking that little raft trip in a rain storm reminded me a lot of The Flame in the Flood.
Suppose I'll have to check out this server next and see what that's all about.
I get low on food because staying buff requires the equivalent of 3 deer/boar kills, a tenth of a crop of turnips, two draugr kills, and four very precious thistle every twenty minutes.
Pig taming is both incredibly tedious jank to get started and does not scale up super well for large numbers of hangry vikings.
If you can find and tame an elusive 2★ Boar, then you can reliably multiply its stock (even just mating it with a common starless Boar). The ★'d creatures have a lot more drops and this helps a lot when it comes to meat.

I've had to range pretty widely just because Surtling Cores are a pain in the ass to find.
I just like the fact that my equipment doesn't break.
Yeah it degrades and will need repairs, but I don't have to waste resources to build it again and again and again and again...

New update came out, and the server has been updated as well.
Patch notes!
Disable google analytics
Updated Unity engine
Forest crypt fixes
Credits updated
Save system returned to old-new
Pickables sync fix (stones, carrots etc)
Dedicated server CPU usage fix (Framerate limiter)
Hearth smoke building fix
Save system tweaks
Console “save” function can be used remotely if player is added to admin list
Autosave every 20min (instead of 30min)
Manual join IP function (dedicated servers only)
Extra tombstone checks ( to prevent them from disappearing )
Better broken world handling ( crash/exit instead of loading an empty world )
Localization fixes
I'm really glad they disabled google analytics. I had to white-list that domain on my pi-hole to enable my server, but of course that's also the way Google serves a majority of its ads.

Absolutely enjoying my time so far with this game. The fact that eating and drinking aren't necessarily required but rather simply boost your stamina and health when you need it is a super welcome change. Plus repairing your gear doesn't require resources, just a workbench. Been playing in a friends world and we're slowly expanding ourselves way further than we ever thought, got the big boat built and discovered the swamp biome and we get to experience the hell that is that place.
I've also discovered that trying to mine copper and tin in the Blackforest is proving to be a grueling experience with the way our world seed spawned. It's incredibly far away from the meadow area we spawned in the terrain is so rough I spent several hours using the hoe to level out the terrain and carve a path to the mining nodes of copper we discovered so we could carry more via the cart. Because trying to manually carry 1-2 stacks of copper at a time back to our base was just a right pain in the ass. But then trying to take the cart back over the rough terrain loaded with 1800lbs of stone and copper/tin proved to be an even bigger pain and several hours later....we have a dirt highway now and i"m not sure what happened.

Re: the food - it's a small thing but I like that the game incentivizes some variety rather than the generic "I've got my 38 loaves of bread, I'm good" most survivally games with food mechanics use.
Copper definitely rewards some cart/route logistics, but for tin you can just run along the coast and grab a couple dozen bits of ore. Since you only need one per bronze ingot instead of copper's 2 there's a bit less work needed there.

Definitely, mixing up meat/mushroom/fruit combos is a nice touch and encourages resource diversity, especially when meads start getting unlocked.

Also as I'm sure many are aware, there's still nasty world ending bug going out there where your character/world progress can get wiped back down to zero or nearabouts. So make sure to back up your world and character files. The steps can be found online, but here's an article discussing it and the steps necessary to back up your files:
Ok I pulled the trigger and bought this after watching some streamers play enough of it. Sadly I went to bed without downloading it and forgot again when leaving for work. Sigh. Oh well.
Man between this game and Dyson Sphere and I being quite pleased;surprised with the EA games recently, especially since I was completely unaware of either of them. Will be a fight to pull myself away from either one to play the other, but heres hoping. I did it to myself to get a change up here and there so neither game gets stale.
"If nothing is impossible, than would it not be impossible to find something that you could not do?" - Me
I was eyeing Dyson Sphere Program since it ate a few of my other friends. Basically flipped a coin and landed on this, and that feels like it's worked out okay.
Happy they hit 2 mil sales already. They've got a decent road map set up.

Days late, but the hoe tries to level the ground with where your feet are. If you hold shift, it will try to level the ground with the center of the circle. The latter is a great way to create a natural looking hill if you want to smooth things out.
I lost all my stuff (full and only set of iron armor and all my tools) among the seas hur huuuurrgh
Made the wrong decision to quickly make a raft and beeline to my deathspot because that took forever and when I was half way there a hydra/serpent(?) appeared and my raft had no chance at all. It got smashed to pieces and then I fell into the sea and promptly got gobbled up
Thankfully I have the spot marked on the map just in case but huuuur huuuuurgh

You can farm carrots but don't think they always give seeds
Or they don't if you make soup outs the carrot
And ya you build a boat stuff it full of ore and. Sail the high seas looking for sea serpents
You can plant a carrot as a "carrot seed" plant, which will always give 3 seeds.
For sustainability, you hold back 1/3 of your carrot harvest to replant as seeds.

That said, it sounds like the main culprit is alt-F4ing out of the game, and I can't recall the last time I alt-F4d a game.
Ah well, backing up anyway!
