I don't have all the feats completed but I feel like I got the mileage I'd want from Forager. I also beat Bowser's Fury over on the Switch and I'm closing in on the end of the DLC stuff for AC Origins. Progress!

I have an 86 year old woman named Yanly in my party that was part of the founding members of the team. Her husband retired, all her friends are either retired or fallen in combat. Her rival Arilina just sacrificed herself for the good of mankind. Her daughter is still active, so they are pretty much Battle Besties.

I guess Yanly is still kicking because she received the gift of the fire spirits and is now part Fire Elemental. She cant hold a weapon anymore because her hands are constantly on fire but she can shoot fire and punch fire and generally just set things on fire.

Im talking about Wildermyth by the way.

You have definitely piqued my interest.
Im planning a better write up when after a finish my second campaign. I think there are plenty of people here that would be interested.

According to Epic's recently released legal filing (in regards to Epic Games v. Apple), the Epic Game Store has lost them 187 million dollars in 2019, and 273 million dollars in 2020. That's almost half a billion dollars in two years.

They are expecting to lose an additional 139 million dollars in 2021.

Getting financial info out of Valve is a little difficult (since they are a private company and don't have to report to shareholders), but it was estimated that Steam pulled in 4.3 billion dollars in revenue back in 2017 (this figure was estimated by Steamspy, and does not take into account sales of DLC, or IAP/Microtransactions like hats and keys, so god knows how high it actually was), an increase over the estimated 3.5 billion in similarly estimated (and similarly understated) revenue in 2016. Valve has however said that the 2020 Autumn Sale has been, in terms of revenue, the best performing sale they have had in Steam's history.

This shit is bananas, man. Absolutely b-a-n-a-n-a-s.

Just to spite shallow descriptions like this, I want to see a game that explicitly markets its characters as "relatively normal, sort of okay looking" and "not really that likeable, somewhat tolerable maybe".

I finished my second Campaign in Wildermyth this morning. The first one was a 3 chapter story which took about 5 hours to complete, and is designed to be a tutorial. The second was a 5 chapter story that took closer almost 11 hours to finish. I'm going to try and describe the structure of the game without giving story spoilers. The tl:dr is that I enjoyed it and its closest to the Arkham Horror board game merged with a bit of Fire Emblem and some light, modular Choose Your Own Adventure thrown in.

The Beginning: Both stories begin with you creating 3 characters. When you recruit new characters Wildermyth will always randomly generate something for you so you don't have to start with a blank canvas, but you are free to edit them as you wish. The only restriction is that the starting 3 characters are each one of the starting 3 classes (Warrior, Hunter, and Mystic). You get a brief introduction to the world and a starting battle which sets the campaign in motion.

The Structure: The world map is set up like a board game with spaces representing different regions. When you enter a region you haven't been to yet you need to scout it first, then you will always get a story set in that region, often but not always a battle will follow, post battle you then have the option to help rebuild the area to gain boons. All of these actions take time and your characters will age over the course of the campaign, eventually retiring when they get too old. But you can recruit new characters as you go, and also your party can have offspring which will join the party when they turn 18, this has all the buildup of Stardew Valley where a character you didn't even know was pregnant suddenly has an adult child, but it does keep you from running our of characters.

The Stories: Stories are always presented in a 2D comic book style format. Subject matter can range from a conversation between the party, being approached by a friendly traveler, an encounter with a strange being, or discovering a a hidden location. Almost always you are given a choice which will affect your game is some way: be it a minor buff for the coming battle or a major transformation for one of your characters. All choices are permanent. You can also be presented with side stories and characters can become lovers or rivals without your input.

Combat: All combats are tactics style with 2D papercraft figures on a 3D grid. There are structures like houses and walls and also furniture and set pieces to maneuver around. Some enemies are reveled straight away while some can be hidden. Fires can be started and spread. Light and line of sight matters. Positioning two party members adjacent gives them bonus defense. Flanking an enemy grants bonus damage. Mystics can "Interfuse" with scenery to grant them spells and abilities. If a characters hit points are reduced to zero they can retreat (but will be maimed) or they can charge and give one last hurrah. A maimed character will die permanently if their hit points are reduced to zero again, but you can choose to build a gravesite to preserve their legacy.

Equipment and Inventory: This was one of my favorite parts. There's no inventory, there's no money or merchants trying to fleece heroes for saving them. All equipment is shown being worn by the characters. When you get a new item you assign it to a party member or break it down into crafting materials, and all party members show if they have something in that slot already. Rebuilt sites provide crafting materials as well and you can forge new weapons and armor or upgrade equipment between chapters. If your new equipment replaces something the old item is lost. If a character dies or retires all their items are gone with them.

Incursions: Incursions are threats where the monsters fight back. They terrorize your settlements and attack heroes in their path until they are defeated. Incursion battles are different in that every hero on the tile can participate in the battle (usually the story battles are limited to parties of 5) and citizens can join as well depending on your party size. There are 5 groups of monsters to fight with one being the major plot point and one not seen at all in the campaign. Every time you fight against a monster group that group gets stronger, as well as monster groups getting stronger over time.

Peace between Chapters: Each chapter has a goal to it that ends when the goal is completed. You might have to fight off the monsters, or explore X tiles, or find a specific site. When you meet your goal the chapter ends and you get X years of peace based on how you did in the chapter. Each of your characters has a non interactive story between chapters about what they get up to when not fighting monsters and you have a chance to forge new equipment. When you've completed all the chapters the credits roll and the story telling is a mix of highlights of the campaign and an epilogue of the surviving characters.

I think that's most of it. The post got long winded because Wildermyth is uniquely its own thing. I've never played a game of D&D but so far this is the closest I've come. You have some freedom with your actions but its not a sandbox, there is a story structure, its also not all combat and monster bashing. And the game is still in early access so they are still adding stories and features. They just added multiplayer this month, and there is an option to play a legacy game with recurring characters that I have not tried yet. Overall I think it is good game that was worth the purchase for me.

I'm currently in the process of destroying Luck be a Landlord. My average turns are a thousand gold, then I have turns where I pop off for 10-20k+. Each spin gives a column reroll and swap two items. Every 4 spins makes the corners adjacent to everything. Those turns are gross.

Luck be a Landlord is an awesome game, yeah! I meant to make a thread for it a while back when I first started playing it but then got too lazy. It really hits the sweet spot for deckbuilder roguelikes for me, which is "100% deck building 0% gameplay" versus Slay the Spire's 10/90 split and Monster Train's 30/70 split.

What did I get? It's kind of like a polished version of the newer Assassin's Creeds with less Ubisoft Map Fucking. The hunting is also a bit Monster Hunter Light, which is just the perfect amount of Monster Hunting for me, it turns out.

Oh hey, in Evil Genius 2, using your Genius' prioritize ability on tasks done by worker minions will eventually cause them to specialize in that room/job, causing their stats to decay more slowly and therefore do the job longer. They also seem to naturally prioritize those jobs on their own from then on out. As a bonus, their hat changes to fit their specialty.

Though the game has some serious problems explaining things, this feels more like something for players to discover rather than something that should have been explained, considering the lack of importance most worker minion jobs have (one notable exception being the intelligence generation computers in the Control Room, which is where I first noticed it.) It's kinda neat.

While waiting for Disco Elysium's Final Cut, I finally got around to Detention, this indie horror title which I think got recommended in a Steam thread years ago. Basically Silent Hill crossed with Lone Survivor set in 1960's Taiwan, it's more mechanically sparse than most in the genre and succeeds largely on the strength of its narrative and presentation. In truth, I think it's genuinely both a better story and a better execution of the story than either of those games, and I'd actually liken it to Disco in terms of using its political backdrop to explore human behavior and motivations.

The opening setting is just two kids locked in a school at night, cut off by a freak storm out of nowhere. Soon one of the kids goes missing, monsters start prowling around, and reality starts to warp around you in hellish ways. There's not much to the gameplay, with no way to defend yourself and standard adventure game puzzle solving to progress. Since it's strictly a sidescrolling adventure, avoiding enemies means holding your breath and sneaking by them. This does instill some tension as it requires you to get close to these twitching, unnatural things, and typically you can hold your breath juuuuust long enough to get by. Chases are infrequent enough to get you to drop your guard for the next one.

Like I said, the story is what makes it all work. Initially just set dressing, its political context slowly takes center stage, its monsters and puzzles becoming allegory for the protagonist's state of mind. A recurring enemy looks vaguely like a menacing military officer at the school. A statue of Chiang Kai-shek goes unnamed but seems to watch you as you progress. You deposit coins in a piggy bank and return later to find it smashed open, a movie ticket amongst the debris. Taking it to the theater, a moment of escapism makes your grey surroundings go all Yellow Submarine on you. It's all impressively done despite, or perhaps because of, the sparse dialogue and mostly monochrome presentation.

All that sets the stage for the real horror, as its mundane villains don't need to chase people to terrify them. Beneath the obvious dangers of a dictatorial state, the story is ultimately about people who used that brutality as a tool for revenge, and find out the monster doesn't come with an 'off' switch. As things get surreal the game checks if you've been paying attention, the ending determined by how well you understand what's really going on. It's predictable that a protagonist going through psychological horror probably did a very bad thing, but where Detention excels is examining the why of it, singling out the very human motivations at the root of it all.

It's a fascinating setting for a horror game, its characters relatable and tragic in a time and place I confess I know little about. The atmosphere is consistently disturbing, gameplay elements are simple but effective, and it's not afraid to change up or even discard those elements once the focus of the story has shifted. The short running time keeps it from overstaying its welcome, and its closure is well earned, disquieting and thoughtful. It's not a happy story, but it's told well and feels personal in a way that a lot of the genre usually doesn't, at least for me.

Someone smarter than me once said that horrible things happen for pretty stupid reasons, and our struggle is to endure and find meaning in a universe often nightmarish, absurd, or both. Detention is a strong exploration of this idea, and a worthy pickup for anybody in the mood for something creepy and indie-sized. :+1:
