one thing i will say about the panel is if you didn’t get to see bakalar’s kid absolutely destroy a small child in hockey you missed out.

    https://hard-drive.net/news-games/giant-bombs-jeff-bakalar-says-dan-ryckert-would-be-happy-living-in-a-dumpster/

Speaking of Bakalar, here's Hard Drive with an inexplicably dead-serious interview about life, videogames, CES, and Giant Bomb (and Dan Ryckert I guess)

That's a very good interview. I appreciate that Bakalar is "one of the good ones" as bosses go, really pushing on that organization of labor. That's good shit.

Also the keyboard talk was a nice touch.

They're probably just not as tight as we maybe assumed they were, and/or drifting apart due to age and life. Jeff has 3 kids now. He has more kids than Vinny. And he's running a business entirely by himself.

Jeff (and also Vinny) was also management at a job they all eventually quit or got fired from when they wanted to quit anyway. There could be some friction there.

Yeah could be like the Myrhbusters where we assumed on-screen friendliness continued off-screen as well. I e., they were work friends.

I guess other than if one of them was running around saluting Hitler, it's not like there's anything I'd do if they hated each other, but still would like to know.

I don't really follow Jeff as closely anymore, but I do check in now and then as he ranks NES games.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYAdYBLgDTA

Listening to him just talk about all kinds of things about when the games were released and the history behind them and the environment that existed when they came out. It's really fascinating. Adn seeing which games he is absolutely terrible at is fun (The man cannot play Marble Madness to save his life). Even if his opinions are wrong quite a bit.

Jeff content in general is great. I gave up paying for nextlander or giant bomb but feel like Jeff’s content is worth it. Game Boyz 2 Men and the NES ranking by themselves are fantastic.

can you feel the struggle within?

Obviously I'm no-one of value to make any serious judgement on people's personal life choices, but Gerstmann having 3 kids in what appears to be relatively quick succession seems wild to me for the workload he takes upon himself going solo

I assume that was a decision between him and his wife to have the kids relatively close together in age. Maybe that's more efficient to have them all be relatively the same age at around the same time, so you only have to deal with growing pains once?

Or it's like how you adopt cats together so they have someone to play with.

Jeff has mentioned that he is basically the last of a dying breed, in that anybody who has been in the industry as long as he has usually ends up going dev-side or quitting altogether.

So his unique historical viewpoints are extremely valuable, because he was there. It's something literally no other outlet can offer.

Jeff is in his late 40's. If he wants to be around as long as possible for his kids, he kinda has to have them now.

Also, conceiving after a certain age becomes a lot more risky.

Part of my thought was that 3 kids in this current economy is also kinda financially adventurous, but again, I'm sure he knows perfectly well what he's doing

I think he has mentioned his wife is much younger than him, so it'd prob be more about her health risks than him, but yes.

Looks like the studio at which Austin was directing has been shuttered by its owner. The cold death march of capitalism continues

As plenty of people had pointed out, that studio/those studios have released a whole lot of nothing since being founded. This sounds like an excuse from a CEO who maybe had the walls closing around him after mismanaging and burning through funds.

"Oh you leaked personal info to reporters" is not why you close a studio.

There was a discord Q&A early on in Nextlander, maybe like 6 months or something in? Could have been longer, where someone straight up was like "hey why don't you have Jeff on as a guest or a stream or w/e"

and the answer was....very very awkward. Vinny handled it mostly from my recollection and was just like uhhhh well he's doing his thing and we're doing our thing and anyway and so on etc. It definitely seemed like there was some sort of tension there, it was not something where it was just like eh you know we're busy. He outwardly said ahhh this is awkward, while answering the question. I don't think it's been an accident that the people they have had on either their streams or their other podcasts have been Not Jeff.

Parody mag Hard Drive inexplicably continues its not-parody line of interviews for games media people named Jeff, with a one-on-one with Grubb about being a pundit/leaker, the future of The Industry and Nintendo Jail: https://hard-drive.net/news-games/jeff-grubb-is-video-game-deepthroat/

God bless that Watergate informant who decided to use the name of a porno as his alias and now every informant gets to be called a "deep throat."

    Reality can be extremely silly.

This final(?) Dan of Steel episode has had a lot of talk of someone who may prove to be too much for this video game deep throat.

I find another reality to be very silly is that Mitch is continuing to try and speed run Mortal Kombat: Sub-Zero Mythologies; a game that had him at the breaking point at times and had a level that took him six hours to beat.

Also Dan conjecturing that in the final Superman 64 level the crab people may control the lazers, mostly just saying that out loud because it was funny, and then moments later being confronted with the lazer crab hallway where he had to defeat a crab person in front of a lazer grid to bring it down about three times consecutively.

This part is absolutely ludicrous to me. I don't know how to describe that, if it's Stockholm syndrome or whatever, but continuing to intentionally play that garbage for the purposes of speedrunning... is it some kind of coping mechanism or what

I think part of that is some of that frustration was definitely kayfabe, while the other part is having played it for weeks at a timefiguring out how the broken ass thing actually worked and being able to just improve once you know what it’s bullshit is
