Hey, thanks for that. I thought what you wrote above, about Nintendo working against themselves, was pretty insightful. I remember playing Metroid Prime I when it came out. The first-person perspective was incredibly immersive, and worked really well with the game's themes of isolation and exploration. And the combat was very innovated for it's time. IIRC, twin-stick shooters weren't really a thing yet, and I don't remember if the GameCube was even capable of doing so. Was it's right stick analog? I can't remember. I sold someone on the game talking about the experience of playing it because it was so ground breaking. That being said, there's been a lot of innovation in that genre since then. I'm not sure if I want a Prime game where Samus is as agile and deadly as Master Chief, or if I want moving in the power suit to be more ponderous and tanky. I dunno, I'm hoping they find some way to be innovative in this space.

I'm very much a music person and hearing Kenji Yamamoto took me to my happy place. If Metroid Prime 4 is just Metroid Prime 1 but bigger then I'll be happy camper. I don't need my sequels to rewrite history or push the envelope. I want them to do what they did before and put a smile on my face. I'm an oddball on this one though because I feel the same way about sequels in movies too. And people really don't seem to like that.

There's a lot of places they could take MP4 that would be satisfying, even if it was just "Prime 1 again". A really well done map with satisfying speed strategies, an interesting plot with better writing than we've seen in a Metroid before, a harder game like MP2 but in a less annoying way, etc. Prime 2 did light/dark worlds and Prime 3 did multiple different planets and on reflection, no one preferred those things to Prime 1's "the same idea as Super, but in 3D." To those unimpressed, cool, feel that way, but just repeating the same thought over and over is not going to impress or interest anyone in the thread. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm not unimpressed with what they've shown, it looks great! I'm unimpressed with the trailer itself. It's terrible IMO. Like I almost would've preferred a title card and single hype shot of Samus.

Ain't even mad about it so much as befuddled that this is what they chose to show. I know they're better at trailers than this, going off of, well, the other hour or so of pretty good trailers in the Direct!

that's an interesting question, what control scheme did they use for the Prime 1 remake? the old gamecube tank controls with a trigger used to go into "lock-on/strafe if nothing to lock on" mode?

Prime 1's Remaster has a completely new and more modern dual stick setup.

It also supports Wii style pointer controls, crazily enough.

Sylux was so broken in DS hunters that he traumatized me. Didn’t help that I played spire and weavel who were both pretty weak

So like, what does this Sylux guy bring to the table? As I recall, each Hunter had their own gimmicks, their own moves and abilities and such, but I never got to play the game, so I -- and I'll assume others here -- don't really know.

What can we look forward to/dread from facing him, assuming they keep him relatively the same?

So in hunters everyone could use every weapon but each hunter got an added benefit with his “signature weapon” for sylux he got added bonus of life leech . The real problem with him was that in his transformed mode he would drop up to three bombs that would create tripwires between the two and detonating instantly when the third was dropped. This led to a meta where sylux players would just stay transformed in their very fast and agile form and dropping all three mines in the shape of a triangle around you which instantly killed you 99% of the time . Good luck tracking him on a stylus .

So yeah it won’t affect a single player game like mp4 at all . It’s just fun to think about how crazy that multiplayer was and on a DS to boot!

For a different form of complaining, I really wish they'd do a remastered/made Prime 2, with seamless loading between the light and dark worlds. Make the portals work like in uh, Portal so you can just step through them without pausing, and it'd make that game so much smoother to play.

I just wish they had re-instituted the scan point in Prime 1 Remastered that let you get the Space Jump right away and programmed in a randomizer mode.

It feels like a safe bet we'll get Echoes Remastered and Corruption Remastered before Prime 4 drops. Maybe Xmas and then halfway to whenever 4 is?

Then again trying to predict slam dunk obvious moves from Nintendo is folly

Probably not, to be honest. Prime 1 massively outsold 2 and 3 combined, and wrapped up it's own story (unless they decide to bring Phazon back so they can destroy it again). There's not as big a market for it, they probably figure they 'll get more out of focusing on new stuff.

If we got the Trilogy versions of 2 and 3 running at 1080p 60fps with no other changes I would be happy with that.

I love Metroid Prime, and while the sequels were good they didn't hit the same for me. Prime 1 fully succeeded at reimagining Metroid in an immersive 3D experience. Prime 2 was a bit esoteric and tedious. Prime 3 tried to be more cinematic and bombastic but not with the quality of its contemporaries so that fell flat.

When Metroid Prime Trilogy released I excitedly replayed MP1 but never booted up the other two.

  • DrascinDrascin Registered User regular
I thought that Echoes wasn't AS good as Prime 1, but then neither is any other Metroid game (yes, I think Prime is better than Super, and I will kill on this hill). I still quite enjoyed it and would happily replay it if it didn't involve having to find some adapter to connect the ancient Cube to the new TV though!

Prime 3, I was less of a fan of.

Echos had two main flaws for me, which I've probably mentioned in this thread already.

    1. Adding an ammo system for beam weapons to the game, especially one based around hard counters for enemies, was kinda shit after the first game had infinite beam use. Just another thing to farm and keep track of, and something that can really hose you if you run out in a middle of a fight.
    2. The cinematic that covers the load time of going between dimensions got extremly tiresome, especially when you're doing stuff like: Enter a portal to the dark dimension to access a portal to the light dimension to get a powerup. That's two load screens to get there and two to get back, in the span of roughly a minute of gametime. That's too much.

Corruption was fine, it just lacked something compared to the original. Also, some of the wiimote stuff felt tacked on.

  • BahamutZEROBahamutZERO Registered User, Moderator mod
corruption was the worst one by far. totally missed the vibe on metroid with all the NPCs and ship travel loading screens between disconnected smaller maps.

Samus herself doesn’t get any personality in the Prime games, but I enjoy that the Federation treats Samus like a one woman armada. There’s a clear sense of like “Gentlemen, Red Squadron will be attacking from this direction, our cruisers will arrive from here, and Samus Aran is going to take the planet.”

    FTFY.

Let's be honest about her track record here.

The main series is 3/3 on blowing planets to smithereens.
    Zebes: Exploded.
    SR-388: Exploded.
BSL station: Crashed into SR-388, then exploded.
    ZDR: Exploded.

Prime is a little less destructive, but still involves the complete annihilation of multiple planets (one via destroying the entire dimension just to be sure)...

Edit: Although thinking about it... all of those planets she blew apart were probably justified. Zebes wasn't even entirely her fault, but vaporizing all the Metroid labs was definitely a plus. The rest? Every single one of those had to go for the sake of the galaxy.

Yeah, Samus gets characterization in the Prime games, it's just in the form of what the Pirates view her as.

And they view her as a improbably small ball of terror rolling around underneath your bed waiting for you to look before dropping a super bomb, leaping out the window, and running off to obliterate your planet.

Other than that, we get to see her personality in the form of cinematics where the cybernetic form of her vanquished enemy appears and is out for screeching revenge and her response is simple "fly closer so I can hit you with my gun".

Said characterization being “Through sheer rage alone I will tame the most horrifying predators in the galaxy and bend them to my will and then use them to murder you and destroy your planet.”

My favorite piece of Metroid lore is the Federation initially sent in order, a research team, a search and rescue team and a Military strike force to SR388. Samus was what they escalated too after the rest disappeared. Probably the only reason they didn't just nuke the planet to oblivion at that point was they figured Samus would achieve the same outcome for less money.

I like the idea that she canonically speedruns all her missions:
"Samus, we just got a distress call from our research station."
"I already answered it, tracked the Space Pirates to their home planet, and blew it up."
"...We got the distress call two hours ago."
"I know, but I was going for 100% completion, and that digging robot takes forever."

I really enjoy how wide Samus's shoulders are in every iteration. That she somehow looks both lanky and like a brick shithouse is honestly an aspiration. (Please forget about the zero-suit.)

I tend to prefer a characterization of Samus as more collected warrior than Roided Up Ragemonster Doomguy-but-female that people often seem to want, personally. She seems pretty chill normally and happy to help. She's basically a paladin for hire raised by chill mystic birds and wearing armor powered by her own willpower and all that. I can't help but think it has to take a LOT to get Samus to hit "proper angry".

Just, well. After so many games, Raven Beak finally managed to do it.

    It went like you'd expect.

Yes, I think most Metroid fans think of Samus as just professional and "this is the job" throughout most moments of most games. Which is why the breakdown in Other M comes off as wildly inappropriate, this is her 3rd or 4th (or much more if you count Prime) fighting this guy, but this time it's so scary and won't a big strong man come save her please??

There was an artist I used to follow who would make short comics of Smash characters just hanging around. His depiction of Samus was of an enlightened Chico warrior monk, and I thought that was neat. But I do enjoy a good Samus RAGE meme when I see one.

Honestly I feel like if you wanted to get some Big Emotion Moment(tm) from her in that scene it would have been so easy to do without the whole staying there defenseless while there's a whole thing going on. Which only made it worse that instead they wanted to do the whole staying there forever cowering for stupid reasons.

Like this is trivial to choreograph to keep the basic shape while giving the whole thing a much better feel. Ridley sneak attacks Samus, sends her flying, immediately lunges after her as she rolls back to her feet and braces for impact, Anthony blasts him in the face to distract him, giving Samus the precious second she needs to dodge out of the way, Ridley retaliates by blasting him off the platform, Samus desperately races to catch him before he falls into the lava and is an instant too late, just like she was too late to save her Chozo family in Zebes.

Ridley killed her parents. Twice, even, which is not a thing many villains get to say. And now he just murdered one of her few remaining friends, after she literally vaporized the planet Ridley was on to make as sure as she could possibly be that they couldn't revive him this time. This is like, prime drama opportunity. Charging in and delivering a beatdown while angry crying and going some variation of "how many times do I have to kill you before you stop taking everything from me" would have been a very effective punch for the player, to see the normally stoic bounty hunter snapping and putting an emphasis on her whole backstory of loss and trauma and all that, without making her seem like a cowering wallflower. Bam, Big Emotion Moment(tm) achieved.

Like, this is just a first idea off the top of my head. If you gave me ten minutes I could probably refine it!
