The Prime 4 trailer was a "we are still making this, here's a teaser" style thing, not a "this game is finished, here is the sales pitch" trailer. You might recall the former style being used for about 20 Zelda trailers for like 5 years, so it's kind of funny to put on this show of confused outrage about it now.

I really wish someone would create a FP Metroid but with actual next-gen technology but no one seems to want to try.
Nintendo has their first party franchises on harder lockdown than any other company. There's no way Metroid, or Mario, or Zelda, or Animal Crossing will ever be on any console/hardware other than Nintendo made hardware. And Nintendo has proven time and again that they are not interested in pushing the envelope with cutting edge tech. They are interested in hitting that $200-$250 price point and selling a shitload of units. The install base of the Switch is absolutely huge. They have sold over 100 million consoles.
I guarantee you that when the Switch successor comes out in '25 or '26 or whenever, it will not be cutting edge next-gen tech. It will be low to mid range tech that they can bundle and sell for cheap. That has always been their way.
It's not that "no one seems to want to try" so much as it is "it's impossible to make a cutting edge first party Nintendo game because the hardware won't allow it."
This is not a matter of trying or not trying. This is a matter of doing what is feasible on the hardware that Nintendo creates. If you want a Metroid game that is cutting edge by today's standards in 2024, you will probably need to wait until a new Nintendo console drops in 2034.
Sorry, I didn't mean a literal Metroid. Just a sci-fi, first person Metroidvania but next (current?) gen.

that trailer is pretty funny - showing off the scan function by looking at a dying pirate? That feels rather cynical to me. "Look, it's the same as the one you like!"

I don't know who this is aimed at. Is there confused outrage in the thread? Seems like a couple of us found the trailer less than exciting, and I at least felt I should explain why since the convo seemed to be talking about graphics and Switch hardware instead of gameplay, etc. If anything, I'm confused that some people's reaction to that is akin to "lol, you crazy". Like I said originally, I'm happy to let them cook. Maybe the release trailer will change my mind, but at least thus far I'm not excited for this title, and that's a valid feeling to have after watching that trailer.
I feel like no Zelda trailer has had the feel of "This feels like the last game" like that prime 4 trailer did. They've all either looked wildly unique, or very quickly get to "What's different about this one."
Like, that Zelda game looks like Link's Awakening, until the reveal you play as Zelda and then the introduction of the mechanics associated with that.
The Prime 4 trailer didn't really highlight anything that you can't find in a previous game, hence why people are kind of disappointed.
It looks exactly like Metroid Prime 1 but at higher fidelity.
Which is really not great 20 years later. Nintendo is usually known for its innovation, even within franchises. Even Metroid Dread seemed like more of a leap forward. I guess it could be misleading, but this is what they chose to show us. It doesn't seem great.
OMG you people have GOT to be trolling with these takes
I have absolutely no idea what folks are talking about? I just rewatched it and it looks exactly what I hoped it would have. Did MP3 look that much better than MP1? What are we looking for here? Bloom? HDR?
It's absolutely bonkers. What did you expect from Metroid Prime 4, Assassin's Creed???
They're kind of working against themselves then. See they just released Metroid Prime 1 remastered which takes an okayish looking game by today's standards and makes it look and feel much better and more modern. That came out a little over a year ago. So they go from those visuals to this (which the intro with the ship flying in looks real, real good) but it's still using the same power.
By extension Dread is a side scroller and much easier to design against and the last side scrolling Metroid game was in what... 2017 on the 3DS? So we're going from the 3DS power to the Switch which is a large step up. A FPS game by design also uses up more resources.
I feel like no Zelda trailer has had the feel of "This feels like the last game" like that prime 4 trailer did. They've all either looked wildly unique, or very quickly get to "What's different about this one."
Zelda is 100% unique in that it's one of their higher selling products so they definitely put in more love for their trailers. Compare how long Tears of the Kingdom reveal was to this.
I'm suspecting they are still earlier in development than they'd like (possibly because of the Switch 2) hence the 2025 date (could be December 31st and then they can easily bump it back) and we're seeing a glimpse of the tutorial area they haven't quite finished. All Metroid games start off like that and generally don't show off any of the cool shit until the end. I still don't think it's a problem for myself. I'm glad to see it in working form and even though people say it's "too much like the old one"... I don't understand how this is a problem. I guess I'm weird in that I'm glad a game looks like the previous ones? I'm glad I can shoot and lock on and dodge around (and really, that's all we saw for now).

No, but I would have liked to see what's going to set this game apart. LIke the shadow/light stuff from Echos or the wiimote stuff from Corruption.
Without showing us what the hook of the game was, you just showed a trailer with footage that could be from any Prime game, really. Not really something to get excited for and certainly not something worth getting exasperated about when people aren't enthused by it.
Thing is, I bet if you asked a bunch of people yesterday what they probably expected from Prime 4, the prevailing answer would probably have been "More Prime!".
If I was clever with editing, I'd do something with this.
I was disappointed by the MP4 trailer, not because of graphics or being too short/early, but because they chose to highlight a linear action-packed campaign sequence that could have come from any of a hundred sci fi franchises. You're in the middle of a war between humans and aliens? Metroid games are about solitude and exploration. I hope this is just a bad marketing decision to focus on a prologue, and not the real emphasis of the game.
Thing is, I bet if you asked a bunch of people yesterday what they probably expected from Prime 4, the prevailing answer would probably have been "More Prime!".
I'd flip that around.
What's the one thing people knew for reletive certainty about Metroid Prime 4 before today? That it'd be a Prime game. You would have been shocked if it hadn't been.
So when the trailer shows up and confirms that, yes, it'd going to be a Prime game.. that doesn't really give us anything we didn't already heavily suspect, if not outright knew in our hearts.
Hence why, IMO, it's a fairly unexciting advertisement. It's alright, it happens, it's not the end of the world.
I do agree though, I think this is more a "This actually exists" trailer than a "Get hyped" trailer. I'm sure they'll go into more actual detail later on any gimmicks.
To be honest though, I don't even remember what 3's "gimmick" was. Other than it was more voice acted and story driven? I don't remember anything like the light/dark thing 2 had going.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Trailer did nothing to set this apart from the 3 that came before it. I have to say it's a little baffling they've spent what, 7 years and this is all they have to show for it?
I'm hopeful there will be something incredible that we just haven't seen yet, but man this makes a pretty stale first impression. Maybe they just don't know how to cut a trailer? Who knows.
It had in-engine footage this time. Were the previous trailers more than a logo? I only remember a logo.
And like no duh it looks like the metroid prime 1 remaster, they were almost certainly making that as a project to make the tools and train the team to make MP4.
I don't even know what would be trolling about our reactions. I love Metroid I want to be excited about it. Dread was amazing. But this trailer just has me worried about Metroid's future.

Of all their franchises, Nintendo should've sold Metroid a long time ago. Metroidvania is one of the most popular genres out there so it's not like you couldn't get talented people on it.

Game is 8+ months away most likely, seems like they wanted to include it here so just grabbed some early game footage. It's not really a trailer or even a teaser really, just regular footage.
I agree it's kind of underwhelming because it literally just looks like (remastered) MP straight out 2002, with the kind of clunky lock-on strafe and such. In reality I'm sure it will feel much better to play. I'm hoping MP4 is to MP as Dread was to Super, built around the exact same bones but much improved in the 'feel' of playing it (although Super is still much better than Dread tbh, that's more down to superior map design and atmosphere).
I expect after the troubled development and complete scrap & restart they probably just went to play it safe and hew very closely to the original. It might end up with a bit of a retro feel to it even.

Yeah, I couldn't give less of a shit if it doesn't look mega-rez shiny-new. I love the styling on the Prime games and if it's more oppressive solo combat while unraveling the fuckery of the Space Pirates, I'm in. I think it's wild that the likes of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom don't have to look like they're running "modern" graphics, but for some reason the styling of Prime isn't good enough.
And to me, it's pretty big fucking reveal for somebody on the Space Pirate side to show up sporting a couple pet Metroids and power armor. The fear of Space Pirates figuring out how to tame and control Metroids has been a basic premise since the first game and now it looks like they've actually done it. They've also been working on anything comparable to the armor Samus wears since forever and they may have that now too. That's some fucking heavy-duty shit for the setting.

The graphics don't concern me. It was a boring trailer. All we saw was stale 2002 era gameplay. No indication that MP4 shakes things up at all. I know y'all want to be hype for this one, and I feel for you, but denial is not a river in Egypt. That trailer sucked.
At this point I'm more interested what MercurySteam is cooking up for the follow up to Dread.

Sorry my dude Sylux is not a space pirate. He's one of the bounty hunters from the DS game Metroid Prime Hunters and 3DS game Federation Force. Probably the two worst games in the Prime franchise. So no, the space pirates didn't figure out metroid taming or power armor tech, no big revelations here, nothing heavy duty, and Federation Force already had Sylux yoinking metroids so that's not really a surprise either.

Hey, thanks for that. I thought what you wrote above, about Nintendo working against themselves, was pretty insightful. I remember playing Metroid Prime I when it came out. The first-person perspective was incredibly immersive, and worked really well with the game's themes of isolation and exploration. And the combat was very innovated for it's time. IIRC, twin-stick shooters weren't really a thing yet, and I don't remember if the GameCube was even capable of doing so. Was it's right stick analog? I can't remember. I sold someone on the game talking about the experience of playing it because it was so ground breaking. That being said, there's been a lot of innovation in that genre since then. I'm not sure if I want a Prime game where Samus is as agile and deadly as Master Chief, or if I want moving in the power suit to be more ponderous and tanky. I dunno, I'm hoping they find some way to be innovative in this space.
that's an interesting question, what control scheme did they use for the Prime 1 remake? the old gamecube tank controls with a trigger used to go into "lock-on/strafe if nothing to lock on" mode?
