Oh, great and benevolent Steam thread, I call upon thee and your infinite wisdom and compassion.

So I just recently got a decent gaming laptop after years of being console-only. Now I'm kinda curious about the games I've missed out on in the last 5-10 years. I'm mainly looking for single-player games that are either PC exclusive, or just so much better on PC that they probably should've been.

I'm open to many different genres. It would probably be quicker to name the kind of games I don't like. Not a fan of roguelikes/lites, walking sims, or visual novels. I do like indie games that don't fall into those categories though.

I feel like I should at least introduce you to the Paradox catalogue. Cities Skylines if you like city-builders, Stellaris for sci-fi 4X, and Crusader Kings 3 for dynastic medieval shenanigans.

Paradox games also tend to go on sale quite frequently.

Crusader Kings 3 is one of those games that if it clicks with you, you're set for a while. Control a Dynasty through Medieval history. It's also one of the most modded games I know off (another PC perk).

Things that don't really exist on consoles:
Factory builders, where you start with a piece of coal and and a shovel and end up covering the world in factories and conveyor belts. I favor Dyson Sphere Program, which is still in EA. The other popular ones are Satisfactory and Factorio (Though you may want to look up the developers opinion before you give him money...)

Total War:Warhammer 2. This is the army game many people dreamed off as a kid. Who would win, 400 dwarves vs 1200 Orcs? What if the dwarves have artillery? ... it's endless fights on top of an ok strategy layer. It's an absolutely bonkers game in size and scope. An SSD is just about required, and it's a hefty install size.

In this case, I might actually be okay with a character who is (IMO) coded as a shithead ("stolen valor" and all) continue to wear the shithead flag.
The problem, still IMO, is all the people out there who probably don't see him, or it, that way.

My least favorite thing about GTA is the never ending parade of online idiots who identify with and idolize characters in it like they're genuine heroes.

Technically, orcs vs Dwarfs is Total Warhammer 1, but if you get both, you can combine the maps. And 3 is coming soon.

The only thing with stellaris is that it is pretty far down the dlc rabbit hole so a sale would probably be necessary to get it at a reasonable price. Crusader kings is not so bad and Cities: skylines is pretty much fine without dlc, but stellaris really needs all the major dlc to feel complete.

Some things off the top of my head:

Civilization 6: there are newer hotter civ-style games, but civ 6 is probably the most well balanced and complete and easiest to get into. Get the platinum edition on sale, though.

Quake remastered: ok, so its a 25 year old game. Its still one of the best playing single player shooters ever, and it comes with a texture update and remodel, a much more seamless integration of the mission packs, and also the old version so if you want to dive further into the rabbit hole you can.

Disco Elysium: A very head trippy hybrid of an rpg and old school adventure game, not much else like it

Subnautica: Undersea survival and exploration, wonderful graphics and worldbuilding

I believe Rimworld was already mentioned, it takes some time to get into but is excellent.

But yeah, welcome to the world of Steam gaming!

As far as stuff you ought to check out, I can point you to a few of my favorites-

Catlateral Damage is my go-to for anybody who wants something crazy and off the wall- it's one of those games where you just go in with the intention of having a crapload of fun. You play a cat. You're pissed at your humans, and so you decide to make your displeasure known- by knocking everything off the shelves and onto the floor to create as big of a mess as possible.

Going to beat Pixie to the punch and also recommend Bleed and Bleed 2 as very good sidescrolling shooters that you'll have a lot of fun with. They're twin-stick shooters that are still really, really good even almost ten and five years later, respectively.

The Rock of Ages series is pretty funny, along with some great gameplay. The animation reminds me of something from the old Monty Python show, too.

@Dirty Take a look for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on sale. It's fantastic and it has some of the best audio I've experienced in any game.

GRIS is a fantastic chill platformer that lets you take your time working through it. Under 6hrs. The soundtrack is absolutely wonderful.

FTL is a fun little space game where you're trying to get your ship through contested territory. You can often find it for under $3. Pixel graphics but they don't get old.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm definitely going to try one or two of the sim-type games, since those aren't really common on consoles. Obviously, I should wait for one of those big sales Steam is famous for before I really get too crazy.

Anyone here try Hot Lava? I had my eye on that one a while ago since I liked other games from the developer, and I like Mirror's Edge, which is also first person parkour. But they never announced a console version, so I kinda figured I'd never play it.

I normally recommend against first person platformers on principle alone, but if you like Mirror's Edge, I guess it's worth a shot? It just seemed from what I saw to be very much what it looks like. It's first person platforming through levels designed to look like normal every day interiors

Maybe they were still tweaking the visuals when this video was made, but it has an oddly remastered look to it here. Like it's rendering old assets at a higher resolution and needs a couple more passes over the textures to add detail.

It definitely seems to be going for a style, but I can’t tell if that sparse kind of “clean” look will work when playing or will just end up looking unimpressive

They seem to be going for a kind of “same quality at every distance” visual style, which leaves the foreground looking unimpressive even though the overall impression works. I’d say it isn’t bad, it’s just not like a rich level of amazing detail up close, especially some of the geometry on up close rocks is very “Spartan”

It’s always hard to tell how these things will come together in the final game on your tv while playing it. It’s definitely not like a showstopper but the visuals kind of work for me in creating a cohesive and consistent style

    @Dirty

Going off my most played list, for most addictive.

Xenonauts, x-com classic done through the eyes of fans. Mods in workshop
Star Wars: Empire at War: Forces of Corruption, unbalanced as fuck but use the death star on the ewoks. Mods for days.
    blah blah blah.....
state of decay 1: Felt like zombie apocalypse, the D&D combat game, really should try the survival gameplay harder
Huniepop: match 3 porn that has good gameplay loops. clicker spinoff is not great, folks divided on the sequel which is built around threesomes and playing on two boards at the same time
Supreme Commander:Forged Alliance, once upon a time, there was starcraft and there was total annihilation. Its a particular taste so get TA from gog to whet your whistle. Unsure if it or the spring mods have an active user base anymore, but this is devastating artillery barrages against ww1 human waves, except the humans are mechs, the tanks build more tanks and have artillery, and the mustard gas is a fucking flying saucer
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, better than dead rising 2 and I love the camera mechanic
Sunless Sea: My non-binary captain has a spouse and child at home to leave their fortune to after we die to this living mountain of ice, in the underground ocean, but we die free of the red hunger. Submarine and Sky Captain sequels
Recettear: Unbalanced, fun if you consider the main plot finished
Heat Signature: Part of the defenestration trilogy.
Far Cry 2: It fucking feels like africa. I should know
Neo Scavenger: Hobo D&D crafting, you're gonna die and you will love it. Really, if I was going to make a game about playing as a runaway slave, it would be like this. Simple, detached, focused on you sucking a little less each time before you beat a man unconscious and leave him naked to the elements
    Rebel Galaxy: Cowboys in space
Supreme Commander 2, more streamlined than Forged Alliance
Europa Universalis: I fucking do not remember anything about how I reach 53 hours
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds Saga: Age of Empires a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, the gungans bombed a republic fortress to ashes and built a monument over it.
lemme skip to some interesting things that are not on console .....
Mercenary Kings, Monster Hunter X Metal slug done by the guy who did THOSE sprite animations and the Rick and Morty promo you know
The Guild 2 (insert DLC here), poison the well to sell cures from your clinic, accuse your neighbor of theft and have them executed because the rest of your family controls the courts. Once had a game run as quickly as I had started it because my character was kidnapped off the street while I was planning on where to start this family's criminal empire.
Streets of Rogue: I used the toilets to posses someone and unleash angry gorillas on the lab, then went somewhere else.
Carrier Command: Gaea Mission: I really, really had fun and enjoyed the open ended version until I lost, but single player dropped the ball at the end. Fun ride all the way, though.
Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows I played this on a flash website when that was a thing and they really, REALLY made a deep game out of it. Still haven't beat it, but don't care. Great tower defense experience.
Aurion: Legend of the Kori Odan I felt a profound sense of loss when I beat this. I compensated by buying several copies for people here and downloading the mobile game. A great project for a rookie team and probably the only game on my list actually made by people who are in Africa.
Wow, theres a lot more here, and I have bread baking
Bionic Dues: Dungeon crawling mechs against robot uprising
Sky Rogue: Ace Combat Roguelike....light? Fuck if I know, I downloaded a tie fighter and shot shit up before switching to an Arwing.
The Bureau: X-Com Declassified Third Person shooter that lost the lead near the end but was fun. Story DLC was worth cost of admission
    Mark of the Ninja: Yes
Curses and Chaos: Brawler and grinding but if you enjoy it, enjoy it.
Everyday Shooter: Relaxing but I never beat it. Got it with a bundle and that music.....
Alpha protocol: Bruh, get a patch but get the game
All 90s Star Wars FPSs: yes
    Duke Nukem 3d: yes
House of the Dying Sun Feels like dogfighting somewhere between BSG and Foundation

Next two mentioned because artist is a PA'er
Cryptark Raid space hulks with a wide rang of weapons in 2d, sequel coming in 3d.
Capsized Beat on GOG but here on steam. Basically the entirety of the first Unreal game, but in 2d with great art.

    Rebuild 3: I am a fanboy
Anomoly: Warzone Earth, reverse tower defense
    This War of Mine: Feels
Reciever: Roguelike game with just one gun, a flashlight, hunt down the tapes. Horror distilled to its barest form
Dark Void: Ran out of money
Defender's Quest: Looking forward to the sequel. Story content is good.
Dust: An Elysian Tale. Furry version of.....I dunno what, but I was a suplexing god of death by the end. Story gave emotional payoff and I will cut someone for the sequel.
Freedom Planet: Sonic the Hedgehog done right by a team of HOLY FUCKBALLS THAT IS CLEARLY A BAD GUY!
Aerannis: Trans protagonist living in a matriarchal dystopia with TERF assholes. You kill a lot of people.
Chimera:Destroy All Monster Girls This is just a free to play megaman game with female protagonist and monster girl pirates and
    Dandara: Brazillian salt platformer
    Bulletstorm
    Wizorb: Magic Pinball

    Abyss Odessy: Chilean roguelight Platformer
Convoy: Mad Max version of FTL
Toy Soldiers: Tower defense of tin WW1 toys

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN I know you do not like visual novels, but I feel this game was written to make folks like you happy.
Desert Child: Cowboy Bebop, the racing game
Muri: old school platformer shooter that feels new and doomlike
Zeno Clash: Heavy Metal Magazine the shooter
The Vagrant: actually good despite the main character looking like an extra busty Yang Xiao Long
    Eternal senia: Free and fun

Far Cry 2: It fucking feels like africa. I should know
Europa Universalis: I fucking do not remember anything about how I reach 53 hours
Toy Soldiers: Tower defense of tin WW1 toys

    Some fantastic choices.

I feel like Off the Record was the high water mark for the Dead Rising series, nailing the formula right before some suit decided to have a slash in the mixing tank and bottle the next game as a playable version of AMC's drab, depressing zombie soap opera.

Far Cry 2 is easily the most immersive title in the series, with recent entries feeling more like taking on a second job in the gig economy. This was one of the first games I revisited with community mods when I made the switch (back) to PC gaming.

Europa Universalis is second in my affections, among historical strategy games, to only its immediate successor. And it arguably does some things better than the vanilla version of EU2. Like making the foundation of a colonial empire in North America a grueling task. And incorporating a phenomenal amount of historical detail in the manual.

Toy Soldiers enthralled me with its classy presentation, from the WWI era music at the intro screen to the collectible ration kit items. Following it up with a Cold War era sequel drenched in 1980s GI Joe camp was an inspired choice, but the original did a far better job maintaining the conceit that the lovingly-detailed combatants are somehow still toys animated by an unseen force.

    Nothing personal. It's just business.

Definitely going to take me a while to look into all of these. Thanks for the suggestions.

Another thing that just occurred to me are games that I may have been able to play on console before, but can be elevated to another level with the right mods. Definitely going to have to look into mods of some of my favorite games. And I know this might be sacrilegious, but I am now wondering if there's a mod for Sekiro to make it playable by normal humans. So much research.

The originals, at least Bioshock 2, had GF WL, which was the biggest endurance run the being able to play it back in the day. I'm not sure if they released a version of the original with that script away, or if the remaster are the only ones playable anymore. I'm thinking a similar situation to Arkham City, But I could be wrong.
