Also went to a major gaming store in the area for the first time yesterday to check out their Warhammer stuff (spoiler: tons of the fan favorites, nothing of anything else - there's not even enough Tau models to field a combat patrol) and found it kind of surprising that they actually have 5/6 of last year's Battleforce boxes in stock, minus the AdMech one. Is that normal?

I'd go back to this video

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1m8gmu3Nyc

which reviews all the books up to the last year. I'd generally agree with him.

You'll need the first 4 books as a platform to be honest.

ABD + Abnett are generally a good bet for any Black Library books to be honest, not just HH related.

No idea of what the audio quality is like though.

Well I am able to get some of the Xmas deals on ebay for reasonable prices from last year. I got the bonereapers one for cheap so like I said earlier I get some more Mortek Guard and sit on them till get archers
I know the Tau are a fist fight on ebay to get

I know when I played Necromunda when it first came out it was the league itself that pressured the store to do a strict WYSIWYG. As they wanted me to cut up my painted escher gang to show they lost limbs and such

I successfully convinced my principal to give me a bunch of money for Warhammer stuff. Specifically the 40k and Sigmar starter sets so the kids have more models to paint and a big Army Paint paint set. My co-sponsor is going to check with her people on anything else we need.

My original idea for my custom Votann League was going to be based on Agartha from Dominions but now I'm thinking maybe the Dark Iron Dwarves from warcraft would be a great theme for the Votann, and now I can't decide

Question to Killteam players and Into the Dark owners:

Is there a logic I’m missing in the matched play ItD missions refusing to use the little bits of sticky out cover like pipes and consoles? They put them in a separate rules section in the book so it has to be intentional, I’m just confused why.

I'd imagine its for simplicity's sake and you can add that stuff in yourself via the optional rules if you like, but they included mostly just the basics for a streamlined version for the missions, but I could be totally off base.

Someone on Reddit put forth the theory that the matched play missions might be the same in future Gallowdark big boxes so they can only include the generic wall pieces and not the twiddly bits that might change box to box.

I can see the logic there. It just makes strict by the book matched play tables a little barren for cover.

I personally love Storm of Iron and the Ultramarines/Iron Warriors series.

Gaunt's Ghosts is a great series of books

Eisenhorn, and Ravenor trilogies are classic 40k and some of its books at its best, and there's a new Bequin trilogy that follows Ravenor but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

The Ciaphas Cain series by Sandy Mitchell are probably the most lighthearted books in 40k and are very fun, and have a decidedly tongue-in-cheek tone that I feel 40k could use more of honestly.

Death of Integrity is a fun read - A Space Hulk rumored to be carrying indescribably precious archeotech drops out of the Warp, and the Novarines and Blood Drinkers team up to cleanse it of Genestealers with the assistance of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Just started reading The Nightlords omnibus.
Pretty good so far, a lot less of the whole "Rawr! We're daemons and evil and hate all that is light and good and imperial! Time to eat babies!" than most of the Chaos novels I've picked up.
Granted, I'm not too far into it, but it seems the protag is just tired of all this shit but doesn't have anything else he can do.

But, definitely another vote for the Ciaphas Cain novels and Gaunt's Ghosts.
I also enjoyed the Yarrick omnibus.

Spear of the Emperor about the Emperor's Spears was actually a fun space marine novel. The Fabius Bile trilogy and the Black Legion books are good for Chaos stuff that isn't "rawr daemons!"

Anything from ADB tends to have good characters. Master of Mankind was a bit of an outlier in that regard though, but that's probably due to one of the characters being The Emperor (so to preserve the mystery he muddled His motives and goals, which are kind of a thing if you're developing a character), and another character was a Custodes, who are... limited even in the context of being indoctrinated zealots. It wasn't a bad novel, just one that hamstrung his strengths as a writer.

Avoid anything 40k with the Word Bearers, 30k isn't bad, but the 40k guys are all moustache twirling wankers.

Infinite and the Divine is great.

Older marine focused books tend to be more bolter porny.

Eisenhorn is interesting because the Warp as presented in the book is rather different than the current Warp. Still dangerous, but not quite the quasi-sentient hell dimension that's just waiting to eat your face.

Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

For 30k, the first three books are good and kinda the gorundwork/base for everything else. If still interested in that setting after that, you can basically ignore 90 percent of the rest of the books and just skip to the ones that have for example the legions that interest you or skip to the "good" ones. Like Know No Fear featuring the word bearers and ultramarines is really good and book nr. 19, but you won't really miss out on anything plot relevant having read books 1-3 beforehand.

Barring me coming up with an original color scheme, I am currently leaning towards Trans-Hyperian Alliance for my Votann. Don' t have any orange models. Might trade out the black undersuit for maybe the dark turquoise of the Ymyr Conglomerate. Do a mashup.

Cain's voice gets a little repetitive if you mainline them, so space them out some. Otherwise they're pretty good reads.

The suggestions above are all solid. I also recommend the Inferno! anthologies and some of the other short story collections as having good bits; a lot of people have written good shorts for BL that never became a series.

Looking at the imperial guard army and man some of these models need an upgrade, the faces look horrendous. Also no women soldiers. I see they have some new units since I used to play but damn the old ones look rough. Theres so much potential with all the different worlds of the imperium too, are there any indications as to when they’ll be modernising and sprucing up this army?

They have done some stuff. Krieg KT kits are amazing. The cadian upgrade sprue has male and female heads. And it seems they are increasing diversity as they go with new stuff as it comes out.

You're about a year and a half late, the standard Cadian box got a revamp a while back with an extra accessory sprue that added some more weapon options as well as 25 extra heads (including female heads).

There was also a plastic Death Korp release, so you have some options for varying up the look of your troops a bit.

Catachans still look like goofy bobble-headed abominations though.

I think Catachans and Space Marine Scouts are both about equal in terms of head sculpts, but the basic Catachan kit looks significantly worse on the GW webstore on account of the fact that their paintjob is a total disaster. The giant bug eyes and complete lack of anything even remotely resembling blending on the exposed skin is completely bonkers when compared to the newer Catachan special characters (or even the command/heavy weapon kits).

The fact that GW hasn't bothered to get anyone to repaint them for a new store page/box art image over the past (nearly) three decades makes me think it's some type of in-joke at this point.

The one-off special character limited release catachan models have all been great (one was female) so if the main troops got redone to match it, I’d fully expect them to look awesome and also have a mix of male and female troops.

Think the new named character for Cadians is Creed’s daughter.

Basically GW are getting better with regards representation in their kits it just takes a while to roll out for some armies.

I like the Ultramarines honestly but their existing sometimes makes it feel like it's tough to make an army with blue as their main color without it looking like them, especially if gold is involved at all.

That being said I'm still undecided on Votann schemes buy I might do blue/black or black/blue as that's a color combo I really like

New guard book is going to be out end of the year or Jan at the current rate. Votan collectors box next week, then World Eaters &/or Guard before the end of the year.
There's definitely new Cadian models plus new Heavy weapon and command squad sets with that book. Apparently the Kasrkin and Cadians are a dual kit.

Old box is probably retired, but might not (see Orks)

A lot of this is going to depend on precisely what you're in to.

For Chaos stuff, ADB is indeed your go-to. First Heretic and Betrayer are both top-five Horus Heresy books, the Night Lord's omnibus is a fantastic treatment of "current day" CSM, and the Black Legion books (not finished yet!) go a long way towards making the "Ultramarines, but black and spikey" legion interesting.

Know No Fear is absolutely fantastic military sci-fi. It's all shooty bang-bang, but it's *real* good.

Abnett's Inquisition books (Eisenhorn omnibus, Ravenor omnibus) are sort of a combination of a detective story and spec-ops doing crazy shit.

Abnett's Gaunts Ghost's books are also great, although there's like fifteen of the fucking things which is frankly too many.
