I'm kinda hoping that someone is gonna Gríma Wormtongue their way into getting the FA to select Lampard or Gerrard, on the grounds that the previous England international footballer did such a good job.

Does anyone think his squad would have made the finals on Spain's path(Croatia, Italy, Albania, Georgia, Germany, France). Idk if they make it out of the group.

Italy were shite and we beat them twice in qualifying, so yes, I think we'd have made it out of the group just fine. I feel like putting it all down to 'luck' is uncompelling as a theory. Four tournaments in a row and in three of them he does better the same or better than any manager since Alf Ramsey? All down to luck? Take practically any eight year stretch before him and we don't even qualify for one or two of those.

i think people are confusing boring football with bad football

no I think he also had them playing bad football

England created less xg than Croatia who were knocked out in the group stages, they had one of the lowest number of shots per 90, created fuck all from set pieces, they spent less minutes winning games than Turkey, had a mediocre xg faced per 90

they were repeatedly bailed out by individual brilliance (in particular bellingham's goal which was their first shot on target in the match)

there's pretty much no metric to say that they played good football and the eye test confirms

I would argue that in all three tournaments England had a very easy route through and went out to the first good team they faced. The exception to this was Germany at Euro 2020 (who had massive problems at the time and barely made it out of the group stage themselves) and maybe the Netherlands in 2024. They got relegated in the nations league losing to Germany and Italy in that time.

Considering how badly England played in the group stage, I doubt Croatia and Italy would have been a good time for them.

  • BogartBogart Streetwise Hercules Registered User Mod Emeritus
To get out of the group in 2020 we had to beat Croatia and the Czech Republic. Our bad performance was against Scotland.

I did see someone mention that they thought the current England setup would suit the Special one.
And as that would be the funniest outcome, I want this to happen.
So long Lampard and Gerrard, it's JoMo time!

The advanced stats match the eye test.

The Netherlands game is the only knockout game where they weren't on the wrong side of xG stats, and thats mostly because of the PK.

    1.44vs1.87(Slovakia), 0.85vs1.45(Switzerland), 1.36(and .79 of that was the pk)vs0.59 NL, 0.65vs1.77(Spain)

They scored 8 goals in 7.66 games. Their xg was 6.1 their xGA(Against) was 5.4. They were essentially playing for coin flips.

Also his refusal to not start Kane who was clearly not fit- he played him 90 in the 3rd group game when they were already through, or really make any attempt at adapting his lineup at all. No halftime subs against Spain is just wild. They were getting destroyed.

  • PellaeonPellaeon Registered User regular
The sub thing is hilarious/sad. Like I know you didn't get to bring Kalvin Phillips (lewlz) but what was the rest of your bench even for, filling out an 11v11 training?

Fernández used Instagram to “apologise sincerely” for the video he posted. “The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words,” he wrote. “I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations. That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my character or beliefs. I am truly sorry.”

It's weird how he knows all the words to those songs he sang that don't reflect his character.

  • The JudgeThe Judge The Terwilliger CurvesRegistered User regular
Ah that specific euphoria that gets you singing about a team that wasn't even in the same tournament.

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/40587342/argentina-government-official-leaves-amid-lionel-messi-row

Argentina's government announced that Julio Garro is no longer the country's undersecretary of sport after he called for Lionel Messi to apologise for the national team's offensive song about French players.

    ....

"I think the captain [Messi] of the national team and AFA [Argentina Football Association's] president [Claudio Tapia] should come out and apologise for this case," Garro told Argentinian radio Urbano Play.

"It is fitting. It [controversy] leaves us in a bad light with so much glory."

The office of Argentina's president Javier Milei issued a statement on X and wrote: "The President's Office reports that no government can tell what to comment, what to think or what to do to the Argentina National Team, World Champion and Two-time American Champion, or to any other citizen. For this reason, Julio Garro ceases to be Undersecretary of Sports of the Nation."

Not really surprising they are doing a shit job at being a government(about 250-300% inflation) so this is easy rah rah nationalism for them. Don't even need to invade the Faulklands.

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/40614391/fishcake-fury-sees-norwegian-game-cancelled-var-protest
The match in the Norwegian top flight between Rosenborg BK and Lillestrom was suspended on Sunday after fans showed their displeasure with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) by throwing fish cakes onto the field.

The protests started from kickoff. After a two-minute bombardment of fish cakes, the referee stopped the match and sent the players to the dressing room.

The match was restarted, but the protests intensified, with tennis balls and smoke bombs being thrown onto the field. The referee abandoned the match around the half-hour mark with the score 0-0.

VAR has stirred controversy in the Norwegian Eliteserien, with several clubs' supporter unions claiming that the time referees spend making decisions using the system ruins matches.

It has faced criticism in other leagues also, with Sweden's top leagues deciding in April not to implement VAR due to opposition from clubs.

From the headline I thought this was about a specific descision but nope. Just so pissed off about VAR existing that the fishcakes rained down. Kinda curious if the stadium serves fishcakes or if this was some sort of preplanned thing with specific context behind 'fishcake'.

  • dlinfinitidlinfiniti Registered User regular
are norwegian fishcakes like asian fishcakes? the asian ones are good but i can't imagine just eating one on its own
also are norwegian stadium foods like not overly inflated? if i get a $15 hotdog from an american stadium, I am not throwing that at anyone no matter how much they suck
