[Starfield] In space, no-one can hear you become overencumbered
Posts
The Well (shabby underworld to New Atlantis) questine is a great intro to the game---it is where I first began to suspect the game didn't suck. It's relatively bite-sized and has no greater ramifications, so I'd go ahead and do it as an intro to the game's better aspects.
And check out The Arsenal, the gun shop; it had a sniper rifle for me when I wasn't finding one anywhere else.
Edit: And if you took a trait in either of the non-snake religions, remember to go loot the church chest. I still need to do that and I've gotten the first two space magic powers... no idea what's in the chest, maybe a sniper rifle...
Yes, there are some parts that are only available at each manufacturer's shipyard. And higher level parts that only start appearing as your character level increases (highest unlock is at level 60 afaik). Parts you otherwise have access to but have specific skill requirements will still show up in the parts list, it'll just list their requirements at the bottom of the stats box on the left.
Small addendum: they'll show up in the menu if you use Add menu. If you have a connection point highlighted that menu is replaced with Attach, which will only show parts that are valid to put there, which will also filter out ones you don't have the prereqs for.
They should’ve at least made helmets crack when you shoot them.
Additionally “my eyes, my eyes!!!”
I had one guy whose booster went off, he flew up 20 feet then exploded and was just gone.
At which point Sarah said something like "Make sure you check him for useful stuff."
Check what?
Also the constant screams of “my eyes, my eyes!” Would make more sense if it’s a response to glass and debris shattering in their helmet. If you wanna get more advanced a decompression system from like suit holes would also be nice
I found a sword early on and its been pretty effective
As someone who is engaging melee an awful lot, it's not exactly fun to suddenly be set on fire after a good sneak attack.
But it is funny.

There's an option to hide it in breathable atmospheres
I also wish there was a way to recolour your space suits. I like the look of the pirate armour, but I want to change it from crimson red since I don’t want to look like I’m part of their faction
Stuff like this should really be in their games by now. Like they know people want to roleplay and make their character unique, just give me palette options on all armour
It like at this stage they should realise you need to give people as many style options as possible. It’s kind of meh on that front.
AI is bad. not sure what bethesda's track record is on this but i feel like this is very patchable and the combat would be 10x better if the AI just didn't do totally insane things
the game hasn't really made the case to me on why i should be making an outpost.....
some of the random space encounters are very fun. highlight of the night was finding a random party ship.. no quest, no special NPC, just a ship full of people raving with the gravity turned off. hilarious.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other

I wish they had shields for melee, it would make melee enemies more dangerous and give melee more viability for player characters
Also during space combat do crew members bark out anything? It would be helpful if they could tell me when my shields are down, or various power levels are running low or empty, etc. I’ve noticed idle chatter and convos, sometimes inappropriately happening during combat, but combat itself feels weirdly muted outside of enemy barks, which are appreciated.
Want to play co-op games? Feel free to hit me up!
Yeah I totally get combat barks from my crew with stuff like enemy systems I've knocked out and the status of our ship. I take it you have them assigned to the ship?
In order to actually arrive at your target planet you have to also turn off planet orbits, otherwise they'll be moving away from you at a greater speed than you can catch up
Because, yes, apparently the planets are orbiting their stars, just so slowly that you'd need to spend an hour watching them to notice. That's such an absurdly cool detail that doesn't add anything to the game but I'm glad they made the effort to add regardless
I've run across several planets with oceans. Had to find a (coast) biome and run along the shore looking for the marine life to complete a survey. Gave me very faint The Time Machine (or maybe The Drawing of the Three) vibes.
I haven’t spent much time in space combat to be honest so it’s likely I just haven’t noticed them
Also what’s the population levels for humanity in this setting? Like we abandoned earth and colonised the stars, then had a war, but in hundreds of years New Atlantis is a pretty small city. You’d think entire planets would be populated by now. I’m assuming it’s just implied the planet New Atlantis is on is populated but they don’t show it?
so you're telling me we might have all the pieces for an Alien Legacy Total Conversion?
You just gotta level harder.
(but yeah, the lack of a respec option is dumb)
Speaking of, is there any reason you'd want to ever have more then single bar of power to your grav drives?
All I've seen is that it cuts a few seconds off the warm up before you jump, which is fairly inconsequential outside of combat, and in combat not worth the effort of trying to juggle power from the systems keeping me alive. Plus I may be jumping into a combat situation at my destination, in which case I really want full power to the other systems the second I arrive.
You simply hold forward and the fire button and reload your save until you manage to win the battle
I am glad that someone told me I need to take a skill in order to target specific parts of a ship though
That they then didn't work into the actual space part of the game at all.
Like shield power - technically you can put less in shields and more in engine so you're faster. Cool! You're more nimble and could dodge some incoming shots
Except there's not enough variation in ship speeds, and it's impossible to dodge - once you're in the sights of an enemy they have you locked and can't actually miss.
So you put shields to 100% always.
Grav does make the drive charge faster.
In theory if you've decided to run you pull power from your various weapons systems and push it all to Shields, Grav, and Engines in that order. Power to Engines should also increase speed and maneuverability when you're in the white zone on the throttle gauge for optimum cornering, which is helpful if you're trying to escape by running through through a dense debris or asteroid field in the lead up to the jump. I think more power to engines also refreshes your boost faster.
I'm used to cycling power around a lot from Elite or Star Wars so I'm usually okay jumping into a system where I might find another combat encounter already on full defensive. If I ran once the odds are I'm just gonna wanna run again anyway, so shooting isn't gonna help most of the time.
While you can't do the tutorial again, check the Help menu. It covers pretty much every game mechanic.
She says she covered 50km every 15 minutes. 200km/h seems pretty slow for a spaceship.
i was really concerned initially that the space instances were just tiny cubes
i dont know the extend of what mods can do in these games but it feels like only very minor AI adjustments would take the game to great heights
