Great OP, thanks for keeping it updated with stand out series.

There's a ton of shows this season.

I try to watch at least one villainess or otherwise should series every season for contrast, just so I don't get shonen'ed out.

This season I'm watching Vampire Dormitories, and it's basically Ouran High school host club-like, except with Vampires. It's interesting seeing different genre tropes.

I resent the suggestion that there's anything actually yuri about Sound Euphonium, quite possibly one of the straightest shows I've ever been forced to watch. Unless you mean yuribait, which it is basically the definition of, yes.

    If your after gay music anime, this season has you pretty covered. In (subjective) order of subtext -> text, we have;
    1. Girl's Band Cry (Not licensed)
    2. Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night (HiDive)
    3. Whisper Me a Love Song (HiDive)

to pick from the reasons why I like it is that it while this is a very soft and fluffy version of an imperial chinese court, it is still a believable ancient china. The edges are sanded down, not removed or ignored.

or to phrase it another way: the harsh realities of life in ancient china are a lot less harsh here, but they are still the realities, y'know?

and how characters take things as pretty matter-of-fact because... they are a matter of fact.
and when Jinshi does go oh my god that's horrible as to why maomao would make herself look less appealing when in public it's because he's a man, and of such high status that yeah, I can believe that that would not immediately occur to him. Almost everybody else would just be like, yup, because it's not their first day on this earth.

also it's very low on the kind of Anime Bullshit that bother me. All I can think of is that the voice of the child concubine is nails on glass to me and my eye twitches a bit whenever they do the AA-AAAAHN anime eating thing and that's really it.

I normally dislike court drama type stories so I was hesitant to check it out but I have heard people praise it and say it's not a typical royal soap opera in that regard so I think I will get around to it eventually

It helps that the author has sensibly not made it a one for one imperial China - it's a historical fantasy setting that draws very freely on multiple Chinese historical periods, letting her get the best of both worlds - a during historical grounding, and a lot of freedom

I would honestly describe Apothecary Diaries as a detective show.

Yeah. It could be described as "What if Sherlock Holmes, but Sherlock was a woman and hyperfocused on poisons instead of crime, Watson and Lestrade were combined into one character, set in a fictional Imperial China-like country, and there was sexual tension?"

    Children's rights are human rights.

AD reminds me a little of the Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee but if Dee was a girl and a toxic substance gremlin enthusiast, instead of an imperial judge.

Finished reading what there is of a fun little manhwa called "Mr. Devourer, Please Act Like a Final Boss." The basic gist is that there's seven unconquerable dungeons in the world and the strongest among them is called the Primordial Core. While all the bosses of those dungeons are strong enough to have prevented being conquered by humans for thousands of years, the boss of the Primordial Core is known as Devourer, an ancient being far beyond the level of any other boss monster with enough power to annihilate Heroes on a whim.

And he is also the laziest motherfucker on the face of the planet who spends 99.99% of his time taking a nap. In the first chapter he wiped out an entire Hero party by complete accident because he opened his mouth in surprise and inadvertently swallowed them all. He's accompanied by Renee, a homonculus maid who also acts as one of the dungeon gatekeepers, and Patrick, a death knight who is the only one with a functional brain despite being a skeleton and voted Most Likely to Suffer a Heart Attack from his boss doing things without a single neuron firing in his empty head to comprise a thought.

It's a surprisingly well-written story that keeps treading the line between comedy and action/horror. Only 41 chapters translated so far but that was enough for 2-3 entire story arcs.

Blooming Love really is a refreshing change of pace, it's avoiding a ton of BS tropes in the genre and just focusing on the good stuff.

Okay anime thread I apparently after not watching anime for literally a decade (except for a brief foray into Food Wars! before it went off of local Netflix) got pulled back in hard by JJK and then they put Food Wars! BACK on local Netflix (no idea, probably Singapore had a panic about all the tiddies and booties) so

    Here I am, I guess

If I want something between doses of finishing up Food Wars should I start with Apothecary Diaries, then? Seems like maybe?

Realistically I've watched maybe two TV shows in full in the last year - oh wait three! and one was just the newest season of Queer Eye - so I've got... space for one new thing at a time hahaha

Gonna check out Apothecary Diaries and see how we go, thanks folks! (That Symphogear transformation sequence rules, but I don't have crunchyroll and given how little I watch TV at all it doesn't make sense to add it to my list of Dumb Subscriptions I Pay For)

Five most recent shows worth checking out (I think we did this slightly upthread or the end of last thread?)
    1. Frieren
    2. Delicious in Dungeon
    3. Apothecary Diaries
    4. Spy x Family
    5. Chainsaw Man

Also I tend to toss Oshi no Ko on the list of "worth checking out"

Oshi no Ko is probably why Kaguya-sama manga last 25% experienced quality drop from the author, so I will never forgive its existence, just by default (never read it, never watched it).

  • cB557cB557 voOOP Registered User regular
More than problematic, I feel like Oshi no Ko is just kinda mediocre. Reynolds made a post a while back that I feel like hit the nail on the head, that it's supposed to be a comic that's a critique of the entertainment industry in general and the idol industry in specific, but it's made by an idol fan for idol fans, so it's unwilling to say anything substantial.

also it keeps teasing an incest relationship, and my hot take is that you either gotta squash the incest asap or you gotta commit to it being an actual part of the plot and explore how fucked up that shit can be properly

the whole ship tease incest shit is just bad
