The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
While perusing EB for "All Pro Football", I noticed that there were a few Wii units in stock, and being an oppertunist-impulse buyer courses through my veins-I snatched one up...
I set it up and played a little bit of the Wii sports... Fun, and I can see where it's reputation of a party device comes from. Now what? I am a total Wii newcomer, and I would like to know where to go and what to do to get the most out of this machine.
I should mention... I am not one for those pesky Instruction Manuals either.
Hook it up to Wi-fi, get some Wii points to buy old nes games (and snes and other consoles if you buy classic controllers), buy some new games (zelda, RE4Wiied if you don't have RE4, trauma center) stream youtube vids with it
Could also try paper mario.

I can't say how suprised, and happy, I was to see it actually came with wireless internet! I spent 100 to get wireless on my xBox, and that aggrivated me-I curse it constantly.
I have never been a fan of the old Zelda games, I think my complaint was the simplistic hack and slash element... However, TP looks like it is pretty cool. Is it worth the chance for someone who isn't well versed in previous Zelda games?

Will RE4 make me pee my pants?
no but it might make you cum them because that game is fucking sweeeeeeet
If you don't like the N64 Zeldas, I'd advise against TP, as it's highly derivative.
RE4 is by no means the scariest game around, but it will make you jump a fair amount.
I've never played an N64... I really haven't used a Nintendo product since SNES, except for a DS.
Has anyone noticed that the cursor sometimes seems to disapear? I also sometimes get a double cursor, which is fucking confusing! I have the sensor bar at about 3 feet off the ground, right below my TV screen... I had it above the TV but I had to hold my hand up above my head to use the remote to navigate, which would get real annoying when trying to surf the web, or do anything like that.
They have that on the Wii? I have heard of it on game cube... is it a shooter?
Yes, it recently came out on the Wii, budget priced at $30. I have not played it with the Wii controls yet, but I have heard mostly positive impressions. And the game itself is possibly the best shooter I've played in the past 5 years. It sounds like you havent played the GC version, so I highly recommend getting it for Wii.
Also I thought Super Paper Mario was really good. And Sonic takes a while to get going, but it ends up pretty good.
Resident Evil 4 for the Wii is my favorite game period.
As far as the sensor bar working below/above the TV and having to hold your hand above your head... there's a setting in the Wii preferences somewhere that lets you tell the Wii where your LED bar is. Odds are it's set to "below tv" which would explain why you had to compensate before.
Also in that same menu is the ability to change the sensitivity of the sensor inside the Wii remote. This hsould fix your disappearing/double cursor.

In the options or advanced settings menu, you can look around. There should be a setting or two to help you dick around with all of that until it's working proper.
Edit: Also, Mario Strikers (soccer) for the Wii is out in a week or two, and it should be some great, simple fun, as well as being the first non-pokemon online Wii game.

Metal Slug Anthology is fun if you a) like side scrolling shooters or b) have a friend who likes side scrolling shooters
Excite Truck is awesome once you get the hang of it, but early on it will frustrate you
Resident Evil 4 is the best
Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is probably the game I have played most since I got the Wii which is a little shameful. It is not for everyone though, the controls take getting used to
The Virtual Console is super great for buying awesome old games you remember/did not get a chance to play
And as always, browsing Youtube for full length TV shows makes for an excellent time

Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is going to have like 6 different online modes. I'd wait for that one.
I'm waiting for Excite Truck and Monkey Ball to hit the $30 or less pricepoint.
What I learned today: Resident Evil must be pretty damn good.
I hope we didn't overhype it for you
Its glory comes from the fact that it appeals to lovers of many different genres. Shooters, adventure games, RPGs, B-Movies with bad dialogue, plus it's got a nice bit of old school "find the boss's weak point" in it.
Also, your Wii plays Gamecube games, so if you missed that generation there are some real gems there.
Oh yeah, mario strikers charged is great online and offline fun if you've got friends and aren't easily frustrated....
I get pissed off with it, though I still recognize it as a great game...
RE4 isn't particularly scary at all. It has the occasional creepy moment, but nothing compared to previous RE games, much less the psychological stuff of games like Silent Hill. It is, however, a kickass action game. Definitely buy it.
Twilight Princess is also an excellent game. It's basically the same premise as the other 3D Zeldas though(not so much the 2D ones if you've only played those).
Super Paper Mario is good fun. It's not for everybody, but it's basically half platformer and half simplistic RPG.
Mario Strikers comes out in a week and it comes highly recommended by the euros.
Those are the biggest hits, but there are a bunch of other good games that depend on your tastes. Stuff like Excite Truck, Trauma Center, Sonic, and others are all solid if you're so inclined. Check up on the reviews. Oh, and if you never owned a Gamecube there are a bunch of must-haves there that definitely merit the cost of a controller and memory card.
Rather than start a new thread: has anyone had any graphical problems since the latest update?
I haven't played the Wii in months and for the most part it has been off, but I've noticed some rather glaring black lines and jagged graphic edges on the main Wii menu. It's not noticeable on other screens, but it's still disheartening to see.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 is probably the game I have played most since I got the Wii which is a little shameful. It is not for everyone though, the controls are total shit.
Fixed that for ya.
Seriously. I don't know why I keep buying DBZ fighters.
Re: TP, I've never finished any other Zelda game. This one I played for over a week solid till I'd beaten it.

Resident Evil 4 is not only what I consider the benchmark that all games should strive to match, but an example of how the Wii's controls were meant to be used. Developers: Please take a look at what Capcom did with RE4's controls on the Wii. Now, do the same thing with more games please.
Will it make you pee your pants: There are a few VERY tense moments, but not many. Mostly, you'll be "scared" like "AGGHHH CRAP! WHERE DID THAT RABID DOG WITH TENTACLES COMING OUT OF ITS BACK THAT JUST TRIED TO EAT MY FACE OFF COME FROM? OH SHIT THERE'S MORE OF THEM!"

The controls take some time to learn, and I don't know why they force you to stand so close to the television, but the controls are pretty great.

One thing I realized, and should have known before even using the Wii, was that simply pointing at the screen doesn't mean that the pointer is pointing where you are pointing to... Yes, that sentence was shit.

So how does RE4 use the Wii remote for aiming?
It just puts a crosshair on the screen that you use to aim. To shoot you have to stand still and hold the B trigger to pull out your gun, then press A to fire.

Is the crosshair easier to keep on the screen than it is while trying to select menus? I have enough difficulty "shooting" the "quit" button, and it doesn't move, nor inflict massive damage on my person.

I put the sensor bar on the top of my TV. You don't need to hold the remote level with the sensor bar; you can hold the remote at a slight angle upward and it should still catch the signal from it. You shouldn't need to hold the remote above your head. It's very sensitive and it will catch the signal, unless you have a movie theater sized TV.
It hold the controller just like I would a traditional controller. I have my elbows or wrists resting on my knees. Just remember you only need slight motions and tilts and it should work well for you.

haha that made me laugh quite a bit.
Yeah, the crosshair is easy to control because it's not quite as sensitive. Think of the remote like a mouse and the crosshair/finger hand thing as the cursor. There can be varying degrees of sensitivity and RE4 must have this sensitivity set to "perfect for busting zombie heads", because it's perfect for busting zombie heads.

That is the setting I have set on my laptop and work computer too... It rarely comes in very usefull though.

Btw. If you're having trouble with your pointing you may want to check that you don't have any infrared light sources in line of sight of your wiimote. Mine sometimes picks up my dining room light as the sensor bar.

And make sure that a line of sight is always maintained between your wii remote and sensor bar.
It's better to think of the wiimote as a mouse rather than a pointer. don't point at what you want to hit. if it's above the cursor, point the wiimote up a bit.
I never beat my GameCube copy of RE4, and I've been neglecting my Wii*. Would RE4 Wii still be a must-buy? I find the premise of actually aiming at the screen spectacular, yet I've heard there are some goofy, multi-button combo presses that must be done to do the most simple of actions.

You already have the Cube version. May as well play it to see if you like it. Then maybe sometime later you can pick up RE4 Wii. But it's only $30 anyway, so you may want to jump on it now.
And it's a game that you'll want to play through multiple times. I know I have. About 4 times now.

You can thank me later.
Could also try paper mario.
If you don't own the DS one, Trauma Center provides tons of arcade-style goodness.
I don't own Excite Truck, but I've heard good things about it.
If you're going more down the party route, WarioWare is a BLAST with 5 or more people.
Elebits, Sonic, Super Paper Mario and RE4 are all most certainly worthwhile purchases.
You should also peruse the Virtual Console for any classic games you're interested in.
