It's that time again. 2009 marks the second anual PAX Buttoneers. Let us swap buttons with old friends and bring new ones into the PAX family.
For those new to this, we use buttons depicting our forum avatars as a means of identifying each other in the swarms of people at PAX. Only, like everything else PAX related, we take it to the next level of nerdism buying our buttons in bulk and then trading them one for one with each other. Just like Pokemon. We had some fantastic designs last year, lets see if we can top them this round?
Buttoneer Registration
[STRIKE]This year we are working on a web app solution to register your button and provide services to edit your info on the fly, generate button lists, etc. Comming soon![/STRIKE] Next year perhaps.
Feel free to post pictures of your designs, but remember:
the size limit for inline images (even behind spoilers) is 500KB. Please remember to link larger images or shrink your images down before posting them. The thread will be skimmed and pics added to the OP.
Where can I get buttons made?
For the best service and price we have found previously that Purebuttons.com is hard to beat. I'm not shilling out, we truely loved them even before finding out that
Purebuttons is now an official PAX sponser! When ordering enter PUREPAX09 and save 15%!
1.5" seems to be a good button size, easy to clasp, plenty of face without being too big, but feel free to go with whatever size or shape you like.

Why do you only list Purebutton.com as a source of buttons? Are you banging the owner?
You are free to have your buttons made by anyone, make them your self if you'd like. Our prior experience shopping around last year has shown that you really can't beat the price Purebuttons offers for buttons in bulk. If you can, let us know your insider info.
Q. How do I get a button? What are these "bonus buttons"?
The buttons fall in to two categories, the "avatar" or "main" buttons, and the "bonus" variety. While there are no set rules for trading them, these general guidelines are encouraged:
- Avatar buttons should be traded for other Avatar buttons, with no challenges or criteria expected to be fulfilled other than you are both Buttoneers.
- Bonus buttons may (or may not!) have special criteria for receiving them, and may go to people outside the button game who fulfill the criteria. This could be a challenge ("What is the flightspeed of an unladen swallow?"), a requiretomment ("You must be a member of the CEOs of America Club"), or one may just ask for one (remember to say "Please").
Q. I want to make people stand on their head, nude, while singing "Yankee Doodle" to receive my buttons! Can't I do that?
It is perfectly within your rights, but don't expect many people to trade their buttons back with you.
Q. Do I have to purchase hundreds of buttons to participate?
Purchase as many or as little as you want. As they say the more the merrier, more than likely you will only be able to recieve as many buttons as you have to give. Last year a somewhat active person could easily go through 100+ buttons.
Q. With 55,000+ people, how will I find you all to get my trade on?
Many if not most of us will be attending various community ran events. Feel free to stop by the Pre-PAX Dinner, the Pre-PAX Movie, Pre-PAX Pubcrawl, or the Pre-PAX Breakfast. We'll be there in droves. No one had any problems finding buttons last year. We stand out pretty hard.
Q. I want to make sure I get EVERY SINGLE BUTTON I can, will there be a Buttoneer meetup?
YES. The tentative plan is to meetup right after PAX lets out on Sunday in front of the WTCC. We'll be easy to find, there's gonna be a lot of buttons around. We can finish off our trade lists, and say our goodbyes.
Q. You said this is a game! How do we know who won?
Everyone is a winner! Especially you! You're so special, you know that?
Q. Will I be able to fly with my buttons. Are they considered an instrument of death?
As confirmed by the US TSA and experiance from last year, 1' -1.5' buttons are not classified as an instrument of death even if you have a 100, and can be carried on or checked (they did say that depending on the TSA Agent you may be asked [forced at gun point] to check the buttons).
But remember this only applies to people whose flight originates in the US. If you are flying into the US with buttons make sure you check with your TSA equivalent before bringing them on a plane. The TSA people here also highly suggested that you check with US Customs (contact via your local embassy) before you try and bring them into the country (they indicated that the problem isn't with the button it's with what you could be hiding in the button). Recap: If you’re in the US you can fly w/ buttons, if you’re not your probably better off mailing.

here's some of my designs
As for our foreign brethren, maybe someone in Seattle can be in charge of having all the buttons mailed to them?
The Sixth Annual Triwizard Drinking Tournament Part 1 |
Pokecrawl Episode 4: The Power Of One!
Portalflip
Pokemon X: Atlus | 3539-8807-3813
I'm also probably going to have some bonus buttons for people that gave me buttons after I lost mine.
<j0z1e> ummmm, all three? at once?
Or a bigger boat.

I'm planning on 100x avatar buttons (slightly different from last year), and 50x bonus buttons for people who can somehow prove that they got my button last year (show me the button, remind me of the circumstances of our meeting, something like that).

I've been thinking about this for months! And I still have no ideas!
*grumbles and goes to design his logo*
Edit: In on the first page before this thread goes to epic proportions
Also, Hi Buttoneers!!
1) I am planning on getting a hugantical box for the previous year's Buttoneers to place in their previous year's buttons. Still working on the specifics, but I will contact--eventually and when school is not the SUPA-Priority--redhalo for all that hubo-jumbo.
2) I am trying to get in contact with Shelly Bright to work on some deal to get one of the ballrooms at the Sheraton for the Final Buttoneer Get-Together on Sunday after the Final Round of Omegathon.
3) I have a few candidates in mind for the ______'s Heterosexual Harem. Nothing is final, yet.
That is all for now!
I'm extremely tempted to reprint. Otherwise, I'll probably use my dog.
Don't order from PureButtons yet until we get in touch with them. They mentioned something about wanted to do something special, so we'll need to figure out what it is.

If I get a single duplicate button I don't know what I would do.
Yeah, I've emailed them giving them a heads up to a busy year and asking about any discounts. Havn't heard back just yet. I've also invited them to drop in the forums and say hi, so they know where to find us.
Interestingly, retailmenot lists our old discount code as still working.
This would be great if we can pull it off. A nice calm place to get a group photo in. Are they looking to charge for the space, perhaps we should threaten to just do it in their lobby again? j/k.
What's the general opinion on wearing duplicates from last year? I figure wearing the previous years' forum button would be pretty cool. Like how ElectricTurtle has all of his previous PAX badges. There were some really cool designs last year that I'd love to wear again, but I don't know if it would confuse the new kids on where to get them or over inflate how many I'd get this year (as if it will need over inflation, ha!)
Another discussion point, what is everyone using to attach buttons to this year? I saw many a sachels run out of space last year, and no one can dispute the stylishness of Cuzza's scarf. I think I'm going to try to make some kind of PAX dedicated kutte.
So I'm probably going with just a straight picture of myself for buttons this year, the problem being I need a suggestion.
Here's my ideas:
Goofy Me
Ren Faire Me
Rock Band me moments before getting kicked out of a hotel room last year
or Bad Horser me
NEW ALBUM OUT, NOW WITH 100% MORE SHEEP!, have a listen will ya
Bad Horser you is obviously what you want.
Extreme body piercing?
Anywho! This Shelly Bright person is either on vacation, negotiating too much with Khoo and the gang over there, or ignoring me--personally, I am hoping it's just the second one--since I did choose which one of the ballrooms BASED on the number of buttons last year. I am figuring with the number of buttons (both avatar and bonus) that will be the number of folks this year. Plus. A comfortably large ballroom where us folks can chill during the last hours of Sunday and trade/hang with ease is a good thing and keep us off securities' backs.
I will keep ya'll updated with the info...whenever she gets back to me.
Well, if it was obvious, I wouldn't put the list up for suggestions now, would I?
NEW ALBUM OUT, NOW WITH 100% MORE SHEEP!, have a listen will ya
If you step back, you will clearly see that Bad-horser you would be best.
This does bring up an idea though. Do we want a THIRD class of buttons: Actual Photo Buttons?
Well I think in that case we shouldn't have any sort of sizing standard for personal VS bonus buttons.
Who says I'm doing a photo
NEW ALBUM OUT, NOW WITH 100% MORE SHEEP!, have a listen will ya
<j0z1e> ummmm, all three? at once?
We're not there to show off our button e-peens (i guess its more like an IRL-peen) redhalo! Besides you know you'll get questions "oh who gave you that button?" and that will confuse the hell out of people. You're welcome to wear mine though.8-)
I'm probably bringing my GTAIV CE duffel bag again. Unless I can find a way to attach them to my wheelchair or something. I think I tried attaching them to my wheel spokes last year and that didn't really work.
I think this year, I'm going to have my main button involve the use of Merton. That was a great spell. Maybe some kind of Kefka vs. the good gang with some Merton destruction action.
As for bonus buttons... I'll have to get to brainstorming about it.
Emorimiku, I encourage you to make the kirby zoidberg buttons again, at least as a bonus button. I know you lost them last year (d'oh =( ), so I bet people will be itching to get them this year!
EDIT: Also Parabola, I'll definitely be wearing yours from last year this coming year. I'm going to choose a few that I thought were particularly awesome and find a place to display them on my person.
EDIT 2: Crap, I've got to find the box they're in though... they're still in a box from the move, they're around here somewhere. Or rather, they'd better be. =(
