I would love an open world with actual platforming.
So would I, but Castlevania hasn't been about platforming since Rondo so I don't know why you'd expect them to start now.
Well the lead designer said "Forget everything you know about Castlevania", so there's some room for hope if platforming is your desire, though by the looks of the trailer I'm not seeing a lot of it. Then again it was just a short trailer, platforming doesn't typically make for real pulse-pounding excitement, so maybe we'll see it after all.
It supposed to be a series reboot right? Well by all means, reboot the fucking series without releasing a game based on Julius' encounter with Dracula in 1999. agh. My insides are dying now.
I think Konami's attempts at 3d vania have been hindered by a lack of a Zelda-esque targetting system. If they can make it not frustrating to attack an enemy that you intend to attack, then it will be great.

I'm not too fond of mercurysteam's past games, but they weren't bad. I love everything else about this though. Castlevania, Kojima AND Patrick Stewart? Its like somebody got chocolate in my peanut butter. And its so good.
Guys. The bosses in Order of Ecclesia are fucking twats. Having to go level up after getting my ass handed to me over and over again sucks muff.
I like GoW, for the most part. This looks pretty awesome and I have a few boners over it thus far.

I still haven't beaten the Giant Enemy Crab in OoE. Obviously, I'm not very far at all. I've had the game for quite a while now, but every time I give him a shot, I get close and then screw up in some stupid way. Then I turn off my DS and don't bother trying it again for another few months.
Perhaps I should put God of War on my next-game-to-play list so I can get a feel for that style of game. Stupid backlog.

Aw come on, watch a Youtube video or something. This game is the best DSvania.

You don't have to level up. You have to play better. Any intentional exp grinding for levelling up beyond what you pick up in normal castle exploration is for pussies.
I'm on the sand cave boss. He shoots little red spikey balls at you and does free willie dives over your head. you know the one?
Fuck, let me think. You need lots of electricity [orbs work best] and straight up reaction time.
By the way, use your shoulder button glyph schemes. All weapons and magic work best with the same thing in each hand, and it makes combos you can spam. And when you use your hearts, instead of a generic gust of wind you get a real Union spell related to what's in each hand.
There are exceptions, light in one and and darkness in the other creates one of the most powerful Union attacks.
I am of course over-reacting for comic effect. One of the great joys of the 'vanias is the ability to choose whether to tough out the battles at the level you are or to grind up a bit as you choose. There's no doubting Ecclesia is worlds tougher than most recent entries in the series, but to me it gave that much greater a sense of accomplishment for it.

Yeah all three of my glyph sets are identicle pairings. I hadn't tried electricity yet.

Yeah OoE was the hardest CV game I've played since... 3 I think. I stopped on a water boss and just finally quit. I couldn't take the fact that a healing potion costed like 1500 gold, and you almost never get that much money in the game.

You are talking about Rusalka? She was annoying and tough... but it gets worse.. much worse.

I remember killing that fish boss with hammers in each hand.
Heh, the most sinister part of OoE was playing in hard mode. Every stretch of spikes added Medusa Heads flying by so if one petrified you, you were dead. I also loved running the hidden obstacle course and I wish all Castlevania games added bonus levels like those. The Nest of Evil? Boss Rush mode? Screw those, I need my hardcore platforming fix.

x2 arrow glyph made her insanely easy..
Like so many, she was massively tough until you spot her pattern, then really quite easy. If I remember correctly all her attacks (bar the tidal wave) are mono directional, so rather than keep your distance you get right up in her face, hop over her when she starts signalling an attack, and stab her repeatedly in the back of the skull while she fires fruitlessly in the wrong direction.

I don't have the reaction time for that kinda stuff anymore.
I wept. The trailer makes this look like the game I've dreamt about since my young mind first interpolated 3D magic into the 2D worlds from the golden games. It's only a trailer, but as of right now I want this so hard I'm getting a hernia from it.

I just finished the fish lady boss last night in OoE. The first few times were annoying as I hadn't played the game in a while and forgot how hard it is compared to other Castlevanias. Once you get her pattern down its easy, also lightning in both hands works very well. The only thing you have to watch is accidentally destroying the platforms she drops, you need to hide under these when she tidal waves. If you are using lightning it is easy to destroy them on accident as if you are spamming between the 2 attack buttons one of them arcs up a bit at first.
As for gold, the 50hp potions are like 500g, I found just clearing out the underwater stage before the fish lady netted me around 3400g + sellables. I only needed 2 potions on her and even then I just used them to be safe in case I got caught in a tidal wave.
I also found all the PoR bosses much easier, if only because you could always resot to spamming that thousand knives attack against most.
The only OOE boss you can really be cheap against is Dracula.

All I know is I never beat Portrait of Ruin because, if I remember correctly, they expected you to defeat Death and then immediately fight Dracula
And fuck that
Or maybe they didn't, and Dracula just had multiple forms or cheap attacks or something, because all I remember is putting that game down and never playing it again
I've apparently blocked out the traumatic memories

I've found a few of them you can get stuck in an attack loop. For example the skeleton cavern boss, the one that floats around with the 3 tentacles summoning little bones which bounce around the room. If you just stay under him the whole time he just keeps trying to smash you. So you easily avoid it, jump up and hit him a few times and repeat. He kept this up the entire fight once I beat him. I was able to get fishlady to do this for a while also, get in range of her little ground wave attack, dodge, attack, repeat.

You had to fight them at once. And Charlotte is like, "Hey that's not fair this hasn't happened in any other Castlevania!"
Ah, the dual death/dracula fight.
Really not that hard.
Just spam death with maxed-out axes.
I remember being really impressed with OoE when bosses used extra attacks against you that they didn't use in normal mode. For example, fighting the shadow...werewolf ...guy - he had a single low lunge when he moved in close. In the Hard mode, it was a low lunge, a high lunge, and another low lunge before he backed away. Minor changes in boss patterns aren't new but you just don't see them that often anymore.

I think they even tooled around on those things inside the castle.
I was sorely disappointed.

I really irks me when they make Castlevania games where a Belmont isn't the main character, or at least playable.

Order of Ecclesia was the only DSvania I ever completed
Some of the bosses were real fuckers, though
But not as bad as Portrait of Ruin's
