CHARACTERSRyu: Well...he's Ryu. The most iconic fighting character there is returns and still knows how to throw a Hadouken.
Ken: Ryu's color swap and training partner might share moves with Ryu but he's more likely to send you flying with a flaming Shoryuken, overused online.
Chun-Li: She might be a woman but she can still kick your ass with her trademark thunder thighs.
Guile: Possibly the most patriotic man alive, Guile Sonic Booms everyone until they become family men.
E. Honda: A sumo wrestler who can fly like a bullet which makes perfect sense in any sort of context.
Dhalsim: An Indian mystic who shows people enlightenment by punching them with stretchy arms and setting them on fire.
Zangief: The 'Gief' is a muscle bound stereotypical Russian wrestler who Spinning Pile Drives bears and anyone else he can grab on a regular basis for Mother Russia.
Blanka: A Brazilian who grew up in the rain forest turning his skin green and making him able to expel electricity. Guess scientists haven't discovered those plants yet.
M. Bison(Dictator): A new Street Fighter may be the most important day of your life, but for him it's Tuesday.
Sagat: The Muay Thai fighter still wants revenges for the scar on his chest and will use any TIGER TIGER TIGER related powers to do it.
Vega(Claw): He might be a narcissistic pretty boy but his claw and wall jumping shenanigans are quite deadly.
Balrog(Boxer): An American boxer with no connection whatsoever with Mike Tyson who enjoys headbutting people in the face and fight money.
Crimson Viper: An American spy who uses flame boots and thunder gloves to even the match up.
Abel: A French mixed martial artist with amnesia looking to defeat the remaining members of Shadaloo.
El Fuerte: Street Fighter jumps on the luchador bandwagon with a lucha libre fighter who cooks as a hobby.
Rufus: A big fatty America taking full use of animation physics. He has quite a overconfident view of himself and wishes to defeat Ken to become America's greatest fighter.
Akuma: He might be balanced but this demon is just as scary as ever.
Gouken: The trainer of Ryu and Ken and the closest your ever going to get to having
Sheng Long.Cammy: Every 12 year old boy's favorite character who was doing ass shots before they where cool. Is in the game thanks to a online Capcom poll.
Sakura: A high school outfit wearing Ryu fan girl who seems to love ripping off his moves.
Dan: Street Fighter's joke character. He intentionally sucks but everyone loves him.
Fei-Long: He's pretty much a Bruce Lee that can set his legs on fire. Which is just fine with most people.
Rose: An Italian fortune teller who shares Bison's soul or something. She has a pretty scarf which functions as a weapon and a sham-wow.
Gen: The only Street Fighter with multiple fighting styles, Gen is intended for Street Fighter veterans who like beating people up with old Chinese men.
Seth: The boss character of SF4. He uses the moves of other characters and his belly serves as a vacuum for the oddest Ultra Combo there is. Is the cheapest bastard around.

Alternate costumesEach character has a different costume they can wear. The costumes are paid DLC and can be purchased in preset packs of five or in a bundle. Each pack individually is 320 MS points (or $4 each). The all-in-one pack is 1000 MS points (or $12). The costumes are for appearances only and don't grant the character any special attributes.
Character StatsEach character is different in their moves, speed, and sizes but did you know that they also have different health, stun, dash, and jump values? The biggest difference between the characters is their health levels. The bigger, slower characters (Zangief, Rufus, etc) take more damage to KO while the smaller, faster characters (Chun Li, El Fuerte) take less damage to KO. The two powerful boss characters, Seth and Akuma, take a lot more damage than the rest of the cast due to their offensive abilities and options they have available to them. Titles and Icons from the Street Fighter Wiki
Online PlayStreet Fighter IV has a few online modes that allow players from around the world to challenge each other in head to head battles. Here are some things you should know before jumping online:
-There are a multitude of skill levels for players online. You will run into new players and guys who have been playing Street Fighter for twenty years. Online is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.
-You can play either Ranked Matches, Player Matches, or enter Championship Mode.
-Ranked matches have you facing off against another opponent for the chance to earn Battle Points (BP). Your BP's will go up or down depending on whether you win or lose. The greater the BP levels are between the two players the greater or lesser the effect will be. If player levels are fairly close (say within 100 or so points) the gain/loss is around 30 or so points. BP levels are used as an approximation of skill, but some players have artificially raised their BP levels, so take any BP value with a grain of salt.
-Player matches are generally used to play people when statistics aren't a concern. A lot of good players can be found this way, probably more so than in Ranked mode. The biggest advantage of Player matches are that when a game is over, you go back to a lobby and can play the opponent again. This is the best way to play games with friends or fellow Penny Arcade people.
-Championship mode is a free DLC that was added after launch. This mode is for people who want to really step up their game and challenge better players. In this mode, you start by entering into the lowest level of tournaments and earn Grade Points (GP) to advance to higher level tournaments. As you earn GPs your rank will rise from E all the way up to A. After that, you will move up to the next tournament level and start back down at E again. This continues through four levels of tournaments. Most PA players here fall in the G3 or G2 rankings. You can earn GPs by defeating other players in tournaments. When you defeat someone, you earn their current GPs in the form of Championship Points (CP). When you finish the tournament, your earned CPs are converted into GPs and added to your total.

PC 'Mod'ness!
Penny Arcade TournamentsI have been running tournaments for the members of the PA forums here for a little while now. These tournaments are all meant for casual, friendly matches with bragging rights and an occasional belt image going to the winner. The tournaments come in a variety of flavors from single elimination, team matches, a suicide tournament (requires you to win with more than one character), and our very own Street Fighter League.
If you are interested in getting involved, take a look at the official thread found
here.
ControllersThe MadCatz Fightpad ($40)
Based off the Sega Saturn controller it features a nice floatly D-Pad and a 6 face button set-up along with turbo options. Great for those who want to be good but don't want to break the bank either.
The Fight Stick (PS3 $70, 360 $80)
The standard fight stick featuring a eight button layout with start and back on the side. Has turbo options as well as a disabler so you don't accidentally hit the home button during a fight. Is easily customizable and a fine entry stick.
The Tournament Fight Stick ($150)
This super fancy one is literally all the parts straight from the original arcade cabinet at a hefty 6lbs. It has all the features from the standard plus extras including being able to screw it right to a table.
As an owner of both the Fightpad and the Tournament stick, I can completely vouch for how rock solid they are to use. Your game will get a noticeable jump in performance from the ease of pulling off moves with controllers. If you're serious about getting better and competing in Street Fighter IV, I'd highly recommend picking up whichever controller your budget will allow for.
You can always make your own controller or purchase a custom stick. Check out
Shoryuken's tech forum for more information.

Did you know?-360 motions done by doing f,df,d,db,b,ub,u+p/k or b,db,d,df,f,uf,u+p/k instead of an actual 360 degree motion.
-Any half-circle motions (f, df, d, db, b for example) can be done by pressing df, b+p/k. This makes doing moves like Honda's Ochio throw (df, b+p) or Chun Li's Hazan Shu (df, b+k) much easier to pull off.
-Any dragon punch motion (f, d, df+p/k) can be done by pressing df, df+p/k. Use this to pull off backwards teleports with M.Bison and go right into his ultra combo.
-Going to ub instead of up on d/u charge moves allows you to retain your charge, which is useful for comboing into EX moves/Supers/Ultras.
-Reversals attacks can break armored moves.
-Charges moves done b,f,b+p/k to allow you to charge faster.
-Multi tap moves activate on fifth hit (Chun Li's lightning leg or E.Honda's hundred hand are good examples). You can use this to activate a certain strength of the move by making the level you want the fifth button press.
-More hits does not always mean more damage. There is a damage scaling feature in SF4 that makes each additional hit in a combo do less and less damage. Say an Super fireball from Ryu does 1/3 off your health normally. If he tacks the same super onto the end of a long combo, the damage reduction will cause it to do a lot less. Because of this, a simple 3 hit combo could do the same damage as a flashier 20+ hit combo.
-When using a Focus attack or a move with armor, you can absorb one hit and not be stunned. The damage you receive from the move will be represented as gray on your health bar and will recover over time as long as you don't get hit.
-Ultra combos do more damage depending on how full the revenge meter is.
-The revenge meter only fills up when you take damage. You can use the Focus Attack to absorb fireballs to fill up the meter, just make sure to not get hit while your life restores.
-Cammy's holligan throw can be avoided by simply ducking.
-Cammy can instant air cannon strike by doing d,db,b,uf+k or d,db,b,ub/u/uf+2k for EX-Cannon strike.
-Dan is the only character in the game who can cancel his Super into his Ultra.
-Dhalsim can instant air teleport f,d,df,f,uf+3P or 3K (reverse motions for backwards teleport)
-Abel's command grab beats throws, but is vulnerable to attacks. His EX-command grab beats attacks (including some get up moves), but is vulnerable to other throws.
-Blanka can hop forward by pressing df+KKK, then unleash the anti-air Blanka ball by pressing uf, u, or ub+k.
-Blanka's Ultra has to be blocked low, high, then either high or low.
-Blanka's Ultra vulnerable on the way down after the initial leap up.
-Blanka can control himself left and right during his EX-Rainbow ball.
-Akuma's Raging Demon last input can be combined into f/b+lk+fp.
-Guile/Vega Super/Ultra can be done by doing db,f,df,d,db,b,ub+K (KKK).
-M.Bison can do a special move or ultra out of a teleport by doing it this way: b,db,b,db+3k/3p. Doing the teleport this way maintains his charge.
-Vega can throw away his claw by doing f,d,df+any p. Doing this motion with 2 punches will cause him to throw off his mask and lose 2 bars of EX meter. This is generally only done to show off.
-If Vega loses his mask, he takes more damage until he recovers it. On the plus side, he does more damage while it's off.
Know anything I'm missing? Let me know and I'll add it.

B. FUCK KEN AND HIS FLOWCHART *
* more like, why do I still lose to that shit?!
Oh, hey I'm making a game! Check it out: Dr. Weirdo!
In other non-Dan news, after hours of playing him, Abel is finally starting to click for me. I'm getting the hang of his ranges and the different mixups he can do. Crossups are still tough for me to deal with, as is Zangief,
Also, playing Abel has the side effect of completely fucking up my game with Ryu. I swapped to Ryu for one match and completely forgot that he had no roll nor command grab. Needless to say, I lost. To Dan. Funny how that works out.
Edit: And wtf is up with falling sky? It either gets stuffed clean or trades nearly every time. The only time I can land it against a jumpin is when I psychically expect the jump and FS with just the right timing. Too early and it whiffs. Too late and it trades/gets stuffed. I'm just like wtf at this point.
As for the Vega shenanigans, I've been focusing his wall splashes. No need to guess which way to block, and if they land in front of you, just release for a crumple and commence rape. Vega's alright if the player isn't just flip and dive happy.
Akuma has no invincibility frames built into his ultra. So you can really do whatever you want to him as he's soaring towards you. You can also do this to Dhalsim (throw him out of his ultra) and I think you can also throw Ryu out of his super.
Images spoilered for size:
Still no Dan pad for me though. :x
Why do you spend all your time with a furry green Brazillian man named Jimmy? He sounds like he should be a comic book sidekick, not a Saikyo master's goon. And what's up with Sakura? You should tap that.
Sincerely,
Goukabel
Saikyo Enthusiast and Furryphobic
The Raid
Did you know his regular special (the duck taunt one) actually serves a hidden purpose?
I am amazed.
I saw a video of Akuma trying to Ragind Demon Dan during his Legendary Taunt.
Dan jumped over him during the last part of his taunt and cancelled into ultra.
Saikyo rules, which is why Abel learned how to roll like Dan!
The Raid
You should see that fuckers expense reports.
猿も木から落ちる
:winky:
And what would that be?
The Raid
Then you will realize his beauty.
This is kinda scary guys.
Stop it.
Ynow how his Ultra can go through like anything?
His super special (taunt one) can be cancelled into his Ultra after each one of his rolls into the arm flex!
This means you can bust out the special right after dropping a guy or keeping distance, as he thinks you're playing around just taunting away with this special of his, you can perform the ultra at any time the enemy brings his guard down and land it.
I am going to test this when I get home, but picture the hilarity.
Trip enemy -> taunt special enemy -> when enemy gets pissed off and decides to charge me -> Ultra.
That or, you can combo into his super. And his super can combo into the ultra. Hence allowing you to combo into his ultra the same way a character can normally combo into a super from normals or specials. Of course that's going to cost you his whole super and ultra bar to do it.
The Raid
Didn't Daedalus here make this?
Oh you meant cancelling his Super Taunt into his Ultra, I thought you meant one of his regular taunts.
Yeah, I've used that before, but I rarely max out the super meter, because I tend to use EX moves a lot.
Even when I'm getting my ass handed to me, if I'm playing Dan then everything is as it should be.
Like Hokutomaro from Garou or Yoshimitsu from Tekken/SC.
The Raid
It was so much fun finally pulling it off.
I know honorably hold the title, "Taunt Master".
I then proceed to go play Dan to lighten up a bit and get back to the roots of SF.
I beat 4 people in championship in a row, losing to a ridiculous M. Bison in the finals.
The thing I like about Dan, is he is straight up Shoto, but with several weird twists and advantages.
His hadouken is perfect range to kite people into combos, and his jump into lk. hurricane kick sends you flying with a knee to the face, almost any class can be hit by this before they can hit you (Vega, Bison).
This brings me back to the days of just worrying about connecting and letting the enemy waste his energy and make mistakes with combos.
Then I come back with a sp.sk>EX hurricane kick. Shit feels so baws.
I'm sticking with Dan.
The Raid
God I hate Zangief, I hate him to death. On Ryu I can usually scrape by the less skilled ones. On Abel I just cry.
I'd rather fight Sagat.
That's awesome
There is not 1 single character I swear more against.
He's a fucking fuck.
"May the Saikyo be with you."
The Raid
I can actually do the Hooligan Throw now, too, which is awesome I guess.
Dan's hard though because I have hard punch and kick on R1 and R2 and the trigger on the PS3 controller is really weird so it's tough to push them together : (
