Kids these days--they're so young! Hell, half the kids in high school haven't even seen The Matrix. Which is a shame, really, because it's a great entry into the philosophy of knowledge. Namely, the problem of Brains in a Vat!
There are many versions of the BIV scenario, but the gist is that we are to imagine a person who's subjective experiences--playing soccer, sunbathing, going to class--aren't actually caused by the things we regularly assume to be responsible. Because this person is not really a person at all: they are a disembodied brain floating in a vat of nutrients, which is being stimulated by electrical hookups in such a way that it thinks it's playing soccer, sunbathing, and going to class.
