In the grim dark future of patch 1.8 there is only complete apathy and bitterness. Forget the promise of quick patches and balance, for there is no peace amongst Games for Windows Live, only an eternity of carnage, slaughter and the laughter of thirsting developers.

Game Modes

Single Player(Co-op)

PancakesFinestCropped.jpg
Image shamelessly stolen from Pancake. Thanks, Pancake!

Widely regarded as the best thing that DoW2 has to offer, Dawn of War 2 brings a unique take on the usual RTS single player formula. You take command of the Space Marine's Blood Ravens chapter to defend sub-sector Aurelia from certain doom. Players will select four squads from six total to deploy and fight. Each squad can be custom equip with the emperor's finest weapons and armors. Each battle pits your handful against untold billions. Shit gets real.

The Last Stand

A new game mode that was introduced with patch 1.8, The Last Stand is a co-op hero survival. Choose the Ork Mekboy, Eldar Farseer, or Space Marine Captain and team up with two other players in a fight to survive 20 waves. The difficulty curve goes quite high. Only a handful of teams have defeated the final wave which shows off new Chaos Space Marine units that will be in the expansion.

Some notes about Last Stand:
- Leveling is persistent. Your Mekboy who levels up in your first game will be the same Mekboy you bring next time.

- Every level unlocks new equipment for your commander. Wargear tends to unlock new tactical options and rather than make your guy straight up more powerful (not usually true early on though)

- Every kill gives you points, strive for a high score! Tactical points on the map will boost your score, as well as each wave you survive without anyone dying. Scores are stored on a GFWL leaderboard, allowing players to crush any idea that they might be any good at this game with a few clicks!

- Every four waves is a boss wave.

- It is pretty fun. We used to have a bunch of players playing it every day, now you'd probably have to like post here or jump on vent and look for people.

Multiplayer

Mutiplayer is 'aight. It is becoming a deeper and deeper game with every patch. Sadly the learning curve to get into any RTS multiplayer is really steep. DoW2 is no exception.

Each race has three commanders which give you special abilities as well as themselves to fight and kill on the battlefield.

As you play in multiplayer you will rank up. Rank is simply how often/much you have played. Rank conveys itself through making your troops look more flashy. For instance, look at this rank 19 FC compared to some higher rank FC:
A low rank FC followed by a high rank one
relic00035.jpg
relic00034.jpg

Rank tends to imply that someone is skilled (After 100-200 games you've probably picked something up), however "true skill" a GFWL thing actually determines who you match up against in auto match and more accurately predicts how well you will play.
Meet the Races!

Eldar
farseersmall.jpg
Their arrogance is only matched by their bullshit.

Commanders: Farseer, Warlock, Warp Spider Exarch

The Eldar specialize in hard hitting, specialized units. Once masters of the galaxy they fucked it up and made a dark god during orgies. Whoops! Hasn't hurt their egos though. They're fast and really annoying. If you can pin them down they'll fall quick enough.

Corp's Comments:
Eldar are probably OP this patch, in the very least against SM. They're also probably the most popular choice now too. That being said they're still a ton of fun to play. Guardian spam is the flavor of the month, with sprinklings of rangers and falcons to keep things in hand. Actually, I'm not sure the flavor has really changed much over time... regardless, they are the "new kings of shit mountain".

BALANCE METER
OPness2Eldar.jpg

Spore Mines
tyr_spore_mines.png
Go eat a dick.

Commanders: Lictor Alpha, Ravener Alpha, Hive Tyrant

These guys just love to gobble things up. They just can't get enough, I swear. If you play this race you will probably be universally hated no matter what the balance is like. Probably not. I don't know if anyone cares anymore.

Nids are all about overwhelming numbers of little guys backed up by huge synapse creatures that extend auras. Nids are very flexible and powerful. They tend to suffer from a great deal of attrition late game and lackluster tier 2/3 units.

If you're looking for a strategy guide to nids, look no further! All you'll need to know is here.

Corp's Comments:
In all reality the nids aren't really all that bad anymore. They've still got some problems but they've got weaknesses now which is really nice. In some twisted circular balance the Ravener Alpha has gone from OP to "alright" and now the hive tyrant is king. Go figure. Spore mines are still way too destructive, but they're manageable now. Weirdest of all they are almost extinct out there, or so it feels. When I play 2v2s they show up maybe once every 10 games. It's crazy.

BALANCE METER
OPness2Tyranids.jpg

Space Marines
bloodravensmall.jpg
And they shall know no fear.

Commanders: Force Commander, Apothecary, Techmarine

The Emperor's finest. The sickle of the Imperium. The last hope of humanity. The space marines have a number of titles but really you can go with "bad ass" to be safe.

Space marines are a well rounded force that specializes in elite troops. They can be a little inflexible but tend to have enough durability to get around it. They have an amazing late game.

Corp's Comments:
Now that tac blobbing is a thing of the past these guys are pretty fun to play as and against. SM v SM is like watching grass grow still but some people are into that. The new shotgun has really fixed up their melee balance; the entire game seems to have shifted over to a ranged focus with it. Everybody but orks maybe. SM are still really popular, so there's that.

BALANCE METER
OPness2SM.jpg

Orks
kommandonobsmall.jpg
WAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHHHH

Commanders: Warboss, Mekboy, Kommando Nob.

Orks love a good fight and they've got the brawn to win em'. They wander the galaxy on their makeshift craft looking for whatever romp the galaxy is up to.

The Greenskins are hard to match in close combat. They've got a strong line up of units each with cunning tricks. They're tough to beat in an all out fight until late game!

Corp's Comments
I really like what they have done with the Orks. Orks no longer have a completely dominant tier 1, but thankfully have a well balanced tier 2 and tier 3 now. It feels like every unit is finding it's place. The popular strategy tends to be double slugga, shoota, loota early game. That's fine with me, it's an interesting mesh of units rather than triple slugga.

Warboss is still pretty much damn useless though.

    That's a lotta rangers.

Also, I am surprised that suppression teams are now actually quite useful. Overall balance is getting better, I'm pretty much re-discovering the usefulness of units that were neglected before. I never used to use Walkers before, but with the right management they can be really effective now.

Well, maybe not the Deff Dread, that's still made of paper.

Most of the imbalance with eldar is Eldar V SM.

It's much less so with other match ups. Every Eldar unit is great now. Wraith lords might be the most lacking. That's about it.

We had an epic moment in our games tonight (which were mostly lack luster). Akira's dreadnought, fresh from base raping, is barely escaping with three HP. He's trucking along with no support, only a spiteful drop-pod to keep the eldar from pursuing with ranged troops. But the drop pod doesn't get the eldar farseer. A fleet of foot far seer comes barreling out of the fog of war with a single warp spider in tow. One hit of her Doomblade would spell an end to the heroic dreadnought. My allied falcon is nearby but it's just not enough.

Only one thing stands between the dread and certain doom: power fist force commander. The warp spider retreats under the falcon's barrage. He gets stunned momentarily by Emperor's Fist. The force commander runs up to finish him off, but the farseer looks like she's going to speed past and finish the job...

He goes into a special attack. He force commander slams the warp spider into the farseer, knocking her down with the corpse her allied eldar. He sprints forward and finishes her off. The guy immediately rage quits.

Nice, if only the warp spider was far enough away to fire his weapons instead of going in for the hand-to-hand kill, he would have taken the dreadnaught as a trophy.

I'd say balance is working out quite well now. All the sides have a chance in early, mid and late game.

One thing I noticed about Akira though, from watching one or two replays he seems to favour just pushing one squad of TSM out and then trying to fast-tech to T2. I don't think I've ever managed to survive early-game without at least a couple of squads.

The problem with SM balance is they are lacking units to counter basic units from other armies. If someone comes at you with a banshee squad early game there really isnt much you can do to stop that. They need to make the specialized SM units better at what they do like the force commander.

Actually scout shotguns will pretty much beat an early game fight with banshees. At their new fifteen power it is more than possible to get them before/during the first engagement, even on claustrophobic maps such as Calderis Refinery.

Last night I dabbled in some TM and Apoth and both times was able to crush the opposing banshees without taking a casualty.

I'm not saying that their are aspects of commanders that don't need work, but I think SM melee counters are pretty safe as it stands. Most commanders have very viable ways to deal with them and the common pool shotgun is wonderful.

Banshees have become somewhat uncommon again it feels to me.

Banshees (and Eldar units in general) are glass cannons. In the early early game you just keep your distance and fire when you can. Assuming he hasn't got Aspect yet on the Banshee squad, you can keep a safe distance, and Banshees go down quite fast to fire. If they've got Aspect, then you should have enough energy for shotguns on the scout, which effectively makes a Banshee squad sitting ducks.

Main problem I've had in that scenario is keeping my scouts away from the enemy, since he's naturally going to target them first with his guardians / commander.

Realistically though, I'm seeing far more Guardian spam these days, even against Space Marines.

    1.9 Patch Notes

Guardians get spammed because they can actually counter the things Relic says can counter them and they're among the, if not the best, scaling unit in the game.

Balance seems better but at what cost I wonder. I'm having difficulties telling factions apart. SM are probably the most unique though that place should be the Tyranids'. They are the faction whose design I currently loathe with a seething passion because really it's completely moronic. Despite them not being rapetastic I cannot play Tyranids because these are not Tyranids Relic.

The only reason I can even play Eldar is because at least now I get to actually see one Aspect and because supposedly I'm playing Ulthwe, let alone play Tyranids where synapse is only important with one commander.

Instead, the only swarm I'm seeing is swarms of synapse creatures and Raveners. Warriors and Zoeys up the ass late game. It's almost like 1.2.

It's because I get bored of the T1 units and get overeager to start using shiny Dreadnoughts and Plasma Cannons. It's not really a valid strategy but most of the teams we fight are so bad that I can handle T1 with just my handful of units and/or let Shep fight two armies himself because I am not a team player.

Yeah, the 1.9 Patch Notes look good. They're all minor tweaks, but they're tweaks that are in the right direction. You can never patch enough knockdown affecting retreating units.

As for the corrosive devourer ala Ravenor Alpha I haven't really seen it in action much but it hasn't seemed too OP. I've used it a few times and it does require energy and a cooldown to do it's burst damage. When you compare it to the Hive Tyrant's venom cannon and the Kommando Nob's rokkit launcha it is definately weaker than those two. He cannot fire it on the run either, unlike the previous two.

Of course, Kommando rokkit launcha was nerfed so that's somthing.

The speed boost on the Razorback and Predator always seemed so unnecessary to me so I'm not sure I'm sad to see them go. Likewise, that fucking warlock jump can just go to hell.

It is good to see some love for the Lictor(unit). I used one the other day when I randomed as nids and it was really not worth 500/50. I'm just not sure what it's purpose is supposed to be.

Just because I hate putting my age in when I visit the site I am going to post 1.9 below.
This update is in the works and we hope to have it available soon.

New Interview. Confirmed vehicle wreckage, melee/ranged stances, and it's confirmed that owners of DoW2 will get the new units for the existing races with out having to buy the expansion.

    Nice.
Relic - One thing to point out is the new units will be available to everyone, including Dawn of War II owners. With one exception, they will add to the army, not replace existing units. I won’t say what unit is replacing what, because I want to fan the flames of speculation.

What do you is getting replaced? I'm calling that Guardians with Dire Avengers, as more or less a pallet swap.

I hope assault marines are getting replaced with something more useful.

I hope its Banshees for some more generic base aspect, then have that unit be upgradable to multiple different aspects.

Alternately, move Bright Lance platform to a Shuriken Cannon upgrade, and create a new aspect.

    I can see three possibilities:

    1. We aren't actually getting a new hero for all the races, and the Librarian replaces one of the current SM ones

    2. Some SM unit getting replaced as a result of the new campaign storyline (like Tacs are now BURLY WARP TACS that start with melee weapons and bolt pistols etc)

    3. One of the Guardian types getting replaced by an Aspect Warrior (Bright Lance -> Fire Dragons, Shuriken -> Dark Reapers, Guardians -> Dire Avengers, etc).

FAKE EDIT: wait forget all this shit replace Banshees with Striking Scorpions. If Relic does that then all is forgiven

I thought they're pretty useful. They do nasty things to ranged and suppression squads, and whilst they're not directly melee they can handily tie up melee squads whilst your Tac squads get their shots in.

It slows your progression to T2 but realistically I find them useful through a whole match depending on the opponent. Then again, I tend to prefer apothecary and double-knockback is nothing to be sneezed at.

In general, I build ASM pretty much as mandatory when playing against other Space Marines. Other sides it depends, usually on whether they've got suppression teams giving me problems, or if I need to tie down melee blobs (although often a devastator squad might be better there). Infiltrated Scouts are decent, but if they've got a detector it's just not going to work. And every Eldar player makes sure to bring their detector unit with them now. :P
