Hey PikaPuff, thanks for the tip to change the instance to get that rifle out of the box. Either that was you in chat a couple hours ago, or someone ninja'd your name and is now helping random people out in chat.
The ground game is suprisingly better than I expected. I mean, it's still pretty clunky feeling at times, but yeah, way better than expected. I had like one of those zen moments making my way down to the Engineering level. There were a couple other players going down at the same time I was, and like, we all instinctively fanned out, were diving in and out of cover, crouching and concentrating fire... oh man, it was a pretty good moment. Also, space is pretty much as awesome as I could hope for.
And after playing today, I NEED to bring this up.. just for self vindication from a couple months back.
Torpedoes are not spammable! Yay for realistic reload times!

DS9 vs the Klingons would have sucked if they had to wait 30 seconds between each launch.

The 2-parter begining to season 4 of DS9 was freaking fantastic. The station was equiped with gattling gun style torpedo launchers. They freaking ripped apart the Klingon fleet like it was cool.
All the more reason why Sisko was the best Captain.

sadly I got smashed with having to pick up someone's shift for mid shift. maybe they will have a few more bugs done when I get home at 830 am est. I did get into my ship before I had to go to bed. killing borg is fun. would love to be able to see the firing arcs all the time, hate being just a little off for torps.
well after the reset things were quite amazingly stable , solid, fluid and working as I think they envision their product working.
The NEG. side is that ship combat is pretty delayed , unresponsive , sluggish, and yawny.
reminiscent of two aircraft carriers with lasers duking it out.
ground animations are really bad , and the delay between activation of a skill and execution of a skill feels clumsy and sloppy.
never once did I feel a sense of danger, or accomplishment.
granted it's still early in the game so it's worth riding out through the weekend I suppose.
I know it's startrek and all but at the end of the day it's still a MMORPG, a videogame and has to live up to a reasonable expectation of some sort of stimulation.
I have a "reserved" beta key. I guess I might as well download it in case. STO might be worth it to fill the gap between now and Secret World or SW:ToR. The game certainly looks interesting enough.

That was me. Someone told me the same thing (about spamming F). It was my own idea to change instances first. Glad it helped someone.
So, what can i do with the anomalous data? Just trade it to that one girl at the starbase and have her make new items for me? Cus i cant sell it and she wont just identify it for me.

if it's a crafting component, you can use it at Memory Alpha for crafting.
However, I don't think Memory Alpha is in in this build, and the actual last build, which had it in, sucked, combat-wise (They upped NPC damage to a stupid degree, sort of how they did for CO, made torpedo damage have a high bleed-through to hulls for shields, and generally fucked up alot of weaponry. It was so bad that Fleet Escorts were automatically dying in one salvo to +1 "villain" level ships.) so badly that they had to roll it back to the current build.
That being said, I think there's maybe one type of crafting up at Memory Alpha.
I'm hoping they got the message during the last CB build, and won't try to up the difficulty again. It's plenty difficult as it is. Being able to take on maybe one or two ships at a time may be realistic for Star Trek, but as a game it's incredibly boring given how NPC spawning is handled later on in levels, since you end up dying a fair amount of times if you're in a ship like an Escort.
Don't put tribbles on your guys. They start growing and don't stop.
The last mission I was in was totally boned. I couldn't go into aim mode, it was crazy hard, and I died in the middle of fighting a mission goal and it despawned, robbing me of the win. I'm done for the night.

dude it's a freakin tribble, they are the bane of all people, why else would the federation use them against the klingons as a weapon of mass destruction
Played through the tutorial missions last night and so far I'm really enjoying sto. Looking forward to getting home from work to get back in. Will add the Penny Arcade channel when I get on as well.

Made a second character while I was getting ready for work this morning. I hope they enable the character save function before the next character wipe. They are easy to make, but I don't want to keep doing it.

I'll be doing a little "Let's Play" of this once I got it all setup.
Captain Klyka of the USS "Let's Play" at your service!
Well shit, if I had known people were still torrenting I would have left my PC on all day at home seeding.
So, I played this a few hours last night. With the American Idol thing starting my pregnant wife demanded that I watch the premier with her. I resigned to follow her orders on pain of death.
Anyway -- after she went to sleep I managed to eek out a few hours on the Beta. Had a really fun time. I enjoy the ship combat a million times more than the Away Mission side of things. So far as my bridge crew I have myself a Tac, Engie and Science officer who all ended up being Female from luck of the draw, one human and two Vulcan. Its nice that the first appearance edit on your crew members is free, and the editor is robust enough that I made three very distinct people that honestly look nothing alike.
I love the fact that you have tons of editing for your uniforms two, I had to write down all my options I chose for my captain so all my crew members would be wearing the same uniform.
As I said before the ship combat is my favorite part so far, and rightly so it being a StarTrek game. Also from the looks of things I should be able to make my "Torpedo Boat" as time goes on and my ship gains more expansion and weaponry slot. First on my list when I get a new ship is getting myself a rear mounted torpedo launcher so that double-whammy strafing runs are a tactical possibility.
I see myself having a couple phasers for utility purposes, but blasting an enemy's ship with a tachyon pulse to fuck up their shields then hitting the "Launch all Torpedoes" button (which I bound it, and the fire all phaser button to extra buttons on the side of my mouse.) should work nicely later on.
Hopefully tactics like that will work in group missions where we can team up together have two players focus on draining/phasering down their shields and one ship (me) hosing them with torpedoes when the time is right.
I hope more of the game is like Starbase 24 and less of the away missions. Maneuvering to present your strongest shield facing while being pounded by Klingon birds of preys and battlecruisers in the hopes your engineering or evasive abilities come off their cooldowns is compelling stuff. Does anyone have experience with the ship types past the starter Mirandas? Just how much more different is the handling and durability of the cruisers and escorts compared to it?
While the Shattner rolls are amusing visually, I think the small arms based ground combat would have worked better with some sort of cover system.
EDIT:
Oh, and 3K damage quantum torpedo crits on unshielded cruisers leaves a very satisfying feeling.
EDIT2:
Additional dumb question - Ships can perform tighter turns at lower speed at the expense of being easier to hit?

Got my game downloaded and patched this morning before work. Got through login to make sure it all worked...
Then had to leave for a 10 hour shift at work where I'm typing this now. I'm trying not to be too excited.

TLDR Im so fucking glad I didnt preorder
Steam (Ansatz) || GW2 officer (Ansatz.6498)
I am getting tired of monthly subs though. Blizz only barely managed to make it worth it, and that wasn't even all the time.

gonna have another go at this tonight, threw my hand in yesterday after 20 mins of rolling d/c's in the character creator...
