Feel free to rename us, Moriarty, it's in "Your Details" in the main menu. And call yourself whatever you want. Cities I'd like to keep named whatever they were previously, new ones make whatever you want. It is now up to you!

God, I feel like a jerk. I realized earlier I don't have the time to do my part in this, but I forgot to come by and say as much. I'm really sorry, I won't be able to do my part to carry the civilization to greatness.
[Note: I tried to avoid looking at enlightenbum's update, but firefox had other ideas when loading. Starting I was aware that we were neighbours with Churchill and Shaka, and that there was some copper and a penisula. No idea where, though]
Team 2 - Chapter 1: The People's Front of Ottomania? We're the Ottoman People's Front!
The sun rises on Suleman I, leader of the Ottoman peoples, and his ambition to lead his people out of the lush valley they have inhabited since time immerorial to conquer the world.
With this lofty goal in mind, the world's first city, [strike]Istanbul not Constantinople[/strike] [strike]Arcadia[/strike] Arcadium is founded. Rich corn, marble and cows for pasture speak to the site's great potential; A small tribe lives to the southeast and the nation's premier fighters are sent to 'negotiate' with the savages.
'Negotiations' over, the Ottoman coffers swell with coin, providing a useful source of money to keep the economy afloat once expansion begins.
The city's population are put to work training labourers to cultivate the fields of corn to the north, while the city's finest minds are sent up nearby Mount Gabriel with sharp objects to discover the secrets of mining. Further exploration leads to the discovery of another isolated village, and the Sultan's finest are again sent to participate in a free and equal exchange of ideas (We got more gold).
Going north along the river the warrior, who is now ProfMoriaty, stumbles across another village. Some time later, he emerges with (yet more) gold.
Before the Sultan can die of boredom, a haggard looking researcher stumbles down the mountain annoucing the discovery of mining. Pleased, the sultan smiles and orders him back up the mountain to figure out how to work bronze.
"But sir, we have no bronze!"
"I said get up that mountain."
Meanwhile, ProfMoriarty walks into an ambush! Could the animals be a real threat?
No. This guy, though ...
Soon after, we meet this guy. While more fashionable Ottomans may laugh at his silly headdress, we can respect his stupid protective trait.
ProfMoriarty, while engaged in a search to find the Zulu homelands, is laid low by some lions. Yeah.
Good news about the discovery of bronze working softens the blow. Slavery is adopted and the workers of Arcadium are put to work chopping down forests to produce a settler (...). The intrepid researchers are rewarded for their efforts by being sent to chase the cows south of Arcadium.
Meanwhile, a source of copper has been found on the otherwise barren southern coastline. Shaka does not seem to be too near, so we may be able to afford to wait for Iron working (and not waste a city).
Hinduism has been discovered! Along with Buddhism earlier; the slow pace of religious discovery suggest that there is at most one religious civ; this is good! Neither of our neighbours are seemingly responsible.
With no warriors, Suleiman is forced to send his settlers out into the wilderness unprotected. He waits with baited breath.
Success! (Just) The phallic city of Shaftsbury is founded just before being eaten by Lions. The pig and floodplains should compensate for the hills, giving Shaftsbury potential to become a great production city. Warriors are ordered in Arcadium and Shaftsbury to compensate for the loss of ProfMoriarty and provide much needed fog busting and settler escort.
The world in 2750 B.C.
Opinion: Not the greatest start to a game ever; I ended researching Iron Working, but that's just a place holder. We need mysticism for culture, IW soon to stave off/attack Shaka and more warriors to make up for lost exploration time (and let Arcadium grow). Only other known neighbour is Sitting Bull, but looking at enlightenedbum's update is seems like Shaka is our only candidate for an early war. With that many protectives I would suggest FWD do a lot of REXing.
Got the save, hopefully I'll get to it today. Since we didn't get the copper yet I'll probably make with the REXing and leave Shaka for a future leader to deal with.
I've just downloaded Civ 4 and it's 3 expansions off Steam. Okay, which do i start playing for the full Civ 4 experience? They all seem to have their own builds and i want to make sure i'm not missing out on something.
It's a completely separate game, and is a remake of the original one that came out in 94(?). It's fun and the original is one of my favourites, however it is a completely different kind of game. There is more micromanagement on a small scale.
The text is a bit hard to read, so each image links to a larger version.
In the year 2750 BC, Funky the Awesome became Emperor of the Ottoman Empire. His first act was to commission a map of the known world:
The known world turned out to be pretty damn small. Emperor Funky decided his tasks would be to push back the boundaries of the unknown, and expand the Empire as rapidly as possible. To this end he commissioned a band of settlers.
These intrepid travelers founded a city near the copper deposits discovered by the previous ruler, and named it for their glorious leader.
They immediately noticed that there was gold in the nearby hills, although it seemed to be protected by a pride of lions. The people found this odd as they knew of no particular reason lions would care about anything not made of meat.
The brave warriors of the Empire headed out into the wilderness, frequently encountering strange beasts, and usually bashing their skulls in.
Before long, they encountered the citizens of a neighboring land, ruled by a man who apparently took fashion tips from the gold-loving lions.
Now that the lay of the lands to the immediate north was known, Emperor Funky plotted out potential locations for future cities.
Soon the learned scholars of the empire uncovered the mysteries of the working of iron.
The imperial surveyors informed the Emperor that a source of this new metal lay just outside Shaftsbury.
Another group of settlers left the capital and headed east. The appointed site, though well provisioned with resources, was quite hot and damp. The citizens named their new city appropriately.
With the expansion of the Empire well underway, Emperor Funky reviewed the latest reports from the explorers. He was sad to learn that one squad of warriors had met an unfortunate end while exploring to the southeast.
Another squad found the borders of the Zulu lands.
Around this time, yet another leader made first contact with the Ottoman Empire.
And yet another city was founded, this time in the midst of a family of elephants. The settlers were quite impressed with the beasts' massive reproductive organs.
The scholars continued their hard work, and made several further discoveries of note.
The workers of Crotchsweat received a blessing from their pagan gods, as a forest they had taken down for wood to build a monument to the Emperor grew back almost immediately.
In the final years of Emperor Funky, explorers found the lands of Sitting Bull, near some tasty-looking phallic fruits.
Just before his death, Funky ordered the scribes to prepare a summary of the technologies discovered so far.
The end!
Here are a couple of spots where I would probably put cities in the near future:
This iron is better as a city site than the other one, plus we'd be keeping it out of Shaka's hands.
Gems!
tl;dr: Met Gilgamesh and Churchill, found Shaka and Sitting Bull, founded three cities, hooked up copper, researched Iron Working.
Bah, had some work come up.
I'll play through the turns tonight, but I'm not sure if I'll manage to get the pictures and such organised and uploaded until tomorrow.
OP should be up to date with Plunkitt's joining of the reserves, people put on the right teams, and links to updates. Let me know if things haven't been.
Could future peoples PM me a link to your updates to remind me. Also if you're not, PM the next person in line to make sure they're paying attention with the save and what not. Thanks!

The Strategy Layer is always active. You can enter edit mode by Alt+X. You can enter view mode by Ctrl+X. When in edit mod, you can add city sites (left click), remove city sites (right click) and change the color of the city big fat cross (BFC).
Heh, those turns were remarkably similar. I got better goodie huts though (2 Warriors + Mysticism).
I could not believe your goodie huts when I went back to look at your turn file; otherwise, same second city, same research (D:). We're all warmongers at heart

I'm more a slavemonger at heart. All things require a useful economy, and especially with the corn, the whips needed to come out.

OK I'm next on the roster but this has come to me at a bad time (rpg night tonight, g/f's birthday tomorrow) - so I won't get to this until Wednesday evening (London time) at the earliest.
Rather than kill the momentum, I think it'd be better if bump down the roster a couple of places, I've got more free time at the back end of the week.
PS
BTW I opened the original 4000BC savefile whilst running the BUG mod and got a message saying I needed to go back to having no mods installed. As a matter of interest, how do you convert it to BUG?

There are two ways to install BUG - as a mod, or into CustomAssets (I think). Existing save files have to be opened using exactly the same mods they were created with; if you install BUG to CustomAssets, it's not treated as a mod so you circumvent this restriction.

When installing you should be offered three choices of how to install. The top choice is the one that allows you to retain save game compatability.

Thanks for the replies - learn something new etc etc
It looks like I'll need to some surgery on my setup. Am I right in thinking that if I save off my old CustomAssets folder somewhere safe before overwriting it with BUG then I can swap between the two modes just by switching between the two versions of the folder?

Professor Moriarty proved far more interested in his research into animals :winky:
than ruling the Empire, and quickly a coup was led. A man named Kivutar seized power for himself, and got down to the business of running things.
Welcome Kivutar, to Team 1!
Heeeeere, sheeeeep!
Whips = free settlers!
50 turns to start?
Yup. Play through the end of turn 100.
I will play through my 50 turns today (was out walking yesterday when I got the first slot, go sod's law), will have update tomorrow.
Your wish is my command. I haven't reinstalled yet and I forgot when I signed up that I'm working mids this week. I'll pick up the next one.
