so would it be fair to say that most people think of writing about games as instrumental, eg. they use writing about games as an indicator as to whether or not they would buy a game exclusively, and are not interested in writing about games as something to read for its own merit
For me, it depends on the game. I don't care at all about articles on, say, League of Legends. But I could read about WoW stuff and enjoy it.
Additionally, I think I enjoy reading WoW stuff because the game actually changes. I would eventually get bored reading about games that have been out for a while and nothing new is going on.
wait what was the whole Batman journalistic integrity thing about now
kotaku put a batman spoiler in a large, splashy title
when people were annoyed, they said it wasn't a big spoiler, and then that it was their duty as journalists to spoil it, as the idea of not reporting news disturbed them.
We'll try to talk about all kinds of games, but the truth is we don't play Madden, or many other sports games. We also don't like games in which the best feature is bouncing breasts and shapely buttocks, not because we respect women necessarily— even though we sort of do— but because we've found that real porn is far more efficient. Our gaming urge is just in a different part of our brains.
I want a website to write about things i like, and only things i like. What is this thing i don't care about? I don't want to read about this! get out of here!

and yes I totally know the irony is I run a blog about movies, and I am not saying one form of entertainment is better than another, but there is something intrinsically different about talking about the crazy things you can see and talking about the crazy things you can do. at least, to me
so would it be fair to say that most people think of writing about games as instrumental, eg. they use writing about games as an indicator as to whether or not they would buy a game exclusively, and are not interested in writing about games as something to read for its own merit
I only read game critiques based on terror management theory.

A bit of both. I mostly read reviews and the like just to see what the community at large thinks about a games pros and cons and such. I can't remember the last time a review actually influenced my purchasing decisions. There are also some reviewers that I like to follow occasionally as well.

how people have fun is different from person to person, but the fact is you can't quantify it.
maybe if it was something about the history of a game/franchise I dug, I would read it.
but talking about a thing that is there to entertain primarily just isn't a thing I would enjoy even remotely.
i'd rather just play the dang game.
you can quantify what is not fun however, in games.
For example, a game that controls like a three wheeled shopping cart on a gravel road. Unless there is something really distracted to that point, isn't a person in the world going to enjoy that.

zero punctuation is the only thing I watch regularly that could be considered games journalism, but I watch it because its funny and not because I want to use it to form an opinion about whether or not I will buy a game

I've heard him say he kind of likes the fact that he reviews the games late so that he doesn't really effect people one way or another. he's mostly just there to be entertainment.

And do you see any trends forming in said terror management?
I have and do read articles that are interesting takes or deconstructions of games that I've played, or at least, games that I'm interested in.
I think the author would have to be an interesting, unique and entertaining voice for me to really start paying attention on a regular basis though, without being there solely for my interest in the specific topic.

I like reading Jezebel, but they're just as biased in their editorial style. Perhaps less blatant about it.
Well, that's true, but I guess journalistic bias is a pretty minimal concern for me.
edit: I just mean that I can't believe someone over at Jez hasn't taken the entire Kotaku editing staff to task for some of their super egregious bullshit.

see I have played and loved games that play like shit
like jaws: revenge and deadly premonition and probably plenty more
just one aspect doesn't make a game not entertaining
and there's always a camp factor

I read Rock, Paper, Shotgun
and, grudgingly, No High Scores, because RPS doesn't cover console news

They might both bite the hand that feeds and maybe not care for getting off their knees.

but see, those are all games where you have a solid point to cancel that. There are games with no redeeming factor to them. And even then there is more of a niche to it. I enjoyed Land of the dead: Road to Fiddler's green, but it was a balls awful game.
The shotgun was unusable. A shotgun, in a zombie game, unusable. It should have been a crime. Still had fun with it, but it is a niche title to be sure. I would never recommend it to someone without a large follow up behind why. just like i can't recommend Deadly Premonition to everyone. I couldn't play it. Ask Orikae, after an hour i refused to play any more of it, i just couldn't handle the controls anymore.

Both of us refused to play it. I'm actually planning a night where I play it with some people in Vancouver, with the sole caveat that I not touch the controller.
I have opinions about him but I've voiced them so many times that I'd rather just have someone else bitch about him so I can agree with them rather than repeating myself
Ok. He doesn't review games he bashes them. Admittedly that's his intent but nobody should use him to help consider a purchasethe flaws he gripes about are amplified far out of proportion .
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

How do you fuck up resident evil 4's controls? Also you kept playing far longer then I did. Though i do think we made bill beat it.

Again, he doesn't really call them reviews himself. It technically is, because he is giving his opinion on them, but all the same, it's comedy.
that said i am tired of him just ripping apart games. his reviews of games he likes are far more interesting.

That is honestly all I read other than the Game Informer that comes in the mail, and this forum.

my favorite is the last-minute endorsement
for an example, watch his Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood review
spends the whole video bitching about it then at the end goes "but what the hell, I had fun with it"
but really, my only complaint about Yahtzee is that he calls himself a reviewer when clearly he's more of a columnist or editorializer.

If I need a quick idea on a game, I'll check metacritic just to see how the score is trending. I only use this method for games I'm renting, not buying.

I was reading a Howard Zinn book and he talked about historical/journalistic bias for a bit
essentially, he said that it's impossible to avoid because simply by choosing what facts to report, you are also choosing which facts not to report
that made sense to me
and so, I am completely okay with bias as long as
1) your bias is a position you arrived at after a lot of thought and reason
2) you acknowledge your bias
3) you look for, and acknowledge, things that contradict your bias
all that said I generally avoid Jezebel because fuck gawker

I disliked the knife controls. the rest of it was outstanding however.
