comics have an incredible byzantine barrier to entry
Not really. Its more image then anything real. I got in with the Heroic age two years back. It was easy. Most comics explain anything you need to know at the beginning.
You want to go swing by a shop and pick up the latest hawkguy, go for it, totally worth your money whether you know the subject matter or not
what's difficult is getting into COMICS, where you need to know the interconnectedness of everything
didn't want this to get BOTP'd so I'll add to it
I started getting back into things right around Secret Invasion time
and while there are a number of trades I'd encourage people to pick up carte blanche that have shown up between now and then
the greater issue is that there is SO MUCH happening
If you asked me to provide a succinct summary of everything that's happened in the Marvel Universe from then until now I genuinely couldn't keep it under 1000 words
Aren't Superman and Wonderwoman a 'thing' now in the latest comic.. whatever? Then again there's like 50 different interpretations out there I'm not sure if there is an actual canon anymore.
What is that even supposed to mean?
God comics are so fucking simple I don't know how you people who don't read them manage to make it sound so confusing.
Seriously? DC's completely overhauled their entire continuity like twice in the past decade. I mostly stopped reading comics because I didn't have the time, but I'd dropped DC before because I got tired enough of that stuff.

I guess but why would you try? I don't know anything that's going on in DC space right now and I'm getting on in Batman just fine.
The boring answer is Yotsuba which everyone knows about. It's about a cute kids, and cute kids are my favorite kind of manga.
One not as many people would know about is a shoujo manga called Gakuen Babysitters about a high school boy and his toddler brother who were orphaned and have to work in the high school daycare to earn their keep. It's fantastic. It also has a tsundere girl, but the comic is mostly about guys. I think most of my favorite manga is written by women, and I love that about the medium.
but really i'm just looking for excuses to tell you about manga
let me tell you about manga
there's no rule against....a manga thread

No? Once. They did it once.
Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Identity Crisis.
Crisis crisis crisis flashpoint.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

That's not quite the same as DC literally just leveled the playing field so everyone's starting from near scratch
What I'm getting at is that Comic Books are easy to get into
Go buy every issue of Hickman's Avengers and you'll love it!
But COMICS are hard to get into. If you want to learn more about what's up with Tony and Cap in that book, you're gonna probably want to check out New Avengers, and then you'll need to learn more about black Panther, and then hey what's up with Doctor Doom I guess I need to buy a bunch of FF books now well shit this is a DANGEROUS sinkhole
never have we blown the doors off the 4th wall this much, too much, oh my g

Though I can totally understand people being confused if they jumped into events. Because those are just a mess of stuff most of the time.

Okay stand back now 'cause I'm gonna explain DC Comics continuity!
There have now been three eras of main DC continuity:
PRE-CRISIS: 1939-1985. Began with the introduction of Superman in 1938. Ended with the story Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985, which rebooted the continuity to make everything less confusing.
POST-CRISIS: 1985-2011. Began after Crisis on Infinite Earths, ended with Flashpoint, which again rebooted the continuity, this time just because they felt like it.

plenty of trades you can pick up and hop in

It's shonen battle manga and that ain't my style!

it's a trap!
Identity Crisis-A really shitting story about rape and mind control with a side of minor retcon.
Flashpoint- The DC reboot.
That's not quite the same as DC literally just leveled the playing field so everyone's starting from near scratch

oh cmon you know he was talking about Infinite Crisis
I admit I haven't read it myself but I'm pretty sure its not anything like a reboot either.
Its just crazy alternate universe stuff isn't it?
no it was kind of a HUGE event that changed a bunch of stuff
It was reality changing and affected everything.
The equivalent of Ultimatum for the entire DC franchise, instead of 3 books.
So in the past 30 years, DC has done 3 events to 'reset' things to make it easier for new readers.
Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Infinity Crisis.
And Flashpoint.
They, uh, also got your name wrong.
On my sleeve, let the runway start
Robbie.
Imagine my surprise when it wasn't my last name they got wrong!
oh well, now I have something to strike up a conversation with Robbi Robb if I ever meet him!

He said past decade.
Crisis on Infinite Earths was thirty years ago.
Identity Crisis didn't overhaul continuity.
Seems legit.

Broodhollow by Kris Straub is a comic about auspicious encounters
like they'll read a story and a totally new character shows up and they're like "WHO'S THAT GUY, SHOULD I KNOW HIM?"
