Yeah, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Gespensts unless you never give them any parts weapons or upgrades. Plasma Stake doesn't hit bosses hard enough, but lots of weapons that a Gespenst can carry do successfully hurt bosses. Besides, I like how the Gespenst doesn't look like yet another Gundam.
Well, it seems to me, then, to use one you'd need to qualify for secret weapons anyway, like getting a Shishioh blade or a Graviton Launcher, I've never been able to get any secret weapons. and M95's of doom's generally work better on faster Reals.
As for parts? I just never have spare parts to give to Gespensts.

I don't see the parts I put on Gespensts as "spare" in the first place. If I put all my parts on my hero-mechs, some are going to end up with parts that don't make any sense, and while my hero-mechs will kick all manner of ass, they were going to do that anyway so I don't really gain anything. If I stick one or two parts that make sense onto each Gespenst, my hero-mechs still kick all manner of ass and now so do my Gespensts. I end up with at least twice as many useful units.
Edit: Especially since in OG2 you can score a bunch of killer parts early in the game pretty easily. I mean, easy in that it's not difficult, not in that it's not annoying, time-consuming and frustrating as fuck. But after that mission, Viletta on my games is untouchable for the rest of the campaign, and with an Apogee Motor or Tesla Drive S on top of that she can cross most of the map every turn.
Yeah, the difference is I stick those parts that make sense on things like Huckebeins and other good reals, only stuff like Gespensts and Shutzwalds end up being useless.

You do realize that the Huckebein is totally worthless without those parts, right? You're basically picking which mechs to make worthless (except the Schutzwalds, the main gun is a beam-weapon not classified as "Supreme" and that is quite the crutch). There is totally a way to split your stuff up in such a way as to have 30 kickass mechs by the end of the game.

Bullet's Huckbein and the 009 sure seemed useful to me, granted, the Mass Production ones in OG2 suck, yes. but the MK. III and the Gunner frame aren't quite THAT bad.

The 009 is useful if you mod it and stick parts on it, sure. But without them it's not really any better than a Gespenst, it just comes with more guns.
In other words all the generic mass produced reals need upgrades to be good.
I'd rather upgrade something that has better core mobility or armor, rather than upgrade something that is very.....average. the 009 also has the advantage of Double Image. I could stick a Hyper Jammer on one, but it's better used on something that dodges better, like the Wildraubiter.
Another point, is Gespensts typically have shitty movement, so they don't even survive long enough into the fray before they're useful. on top of that, there isn't much you can give them weapon wise to make up for their disadvantages, unless of course you have unlocked some secret weapons.

Do you guys ever continue when you lose a mech? I generally don't, only a few times where it would be a huge hassle, not just a quick restart from my save.
You know what's terrible? I still haven't beaten OG1. I just got to a point and stopped again.

It depends which mech and which mission, but I usually don't lose any mechs. None of my units are ever designed to die, at the very least.
Ughm finally sat down and beat Judecca, because I need that extra OG2 money.
I do have the mateires to fight the real final boss, god Sepetugint is so hard, he throws SO MANY grunts at the beginiing there. It takes forever just to get to him, and I though the thing with Judecca and the boxed in fight with Ingram was annoying.
So I finally killed Seputugint. Now, I have to worry about getting through OG2. if I can barely scrape by on that fight. (I barely survived by the skin of my teeth. let me tell ya, Giado and Latouni were livesavers with Replenish and Enable, getting me that last Nendou Bakusai Ken.)
Even with all this extra money and extra PP split among my pilots, I Don't know how to get through this, Axel and Wodan and those Inpectors make Ingram and Seputgint look easy, and I don't know how to adjust to the loss of Giado and Garnet. those two were some of my best secodary pilots. how am I suipposed to make due with the suckitude of Kai, Arado, Seolla, Ibis, Carla, and Yuuki? Arado and Seolla are just a far less powerful Kyosuke and Excellen, Kai's only decent if you meet the requirements to earn his Super Robot. Ibis sucks (She was decent with Hypernion in the @ games, but Astelion just.....meh. and while she's in the Calion she's too hard to keep alive!) Carla and Yuuki are only decent if you managed to get the Ravers in OGs. Randgriths are pretty stupid, but I guess it's a little cruel to say they are worse than gespents. They're just, not as good as some other secondary units I can think of.
We don't need to know every little detail of how you play the game, you know. If you're having problems, go to GameFAQs for a walkthrough.
Walkthroughs don't really cover stuff like who to level up and stuff, it only covers how to complete each mission and getting battle masteries. it doesn't cover how best to spend Money or PP other than "Get SP Regenerate as fast as possible." Even if it comes down to me doing as the walkthrough says, there's still times it comes down to how well you've spent your money and pilot points. (especially in OG2, as I hear you need to play around with the Pilot skills and stats way more than in OG1.) OG2 just seems pretty strict with the whole "you need to have a sound plan for your money and PP." and apparently Pumping the SRX up to as close as Banprieos damage numbers at possible, isn't apparently sound. also, Upgrading the Grungust types 1 and 2 doesn't seem to be a good idea anymore either. nor is upgrading those Huckebeins.
Edit: After getting to OG2 Proper after all of those Excellence and 2.5 sneak peek missions, I have like a lot of money, but, I just can't bring myself to Upgrade the Alt and Weiss like I "should." I keep telling myself, "wait until I get on the Moon route so I can trick out the R-1 and R-Blade."

...Wow, you're the anti-Me as well. I fucking hated Giado and Garnet, Kai's frickin' awesome in the R-Blade for me, and Arado and Seolla are two of my favorite characters.
Carla and Yuuki kick ass on the long-range front with the mechs they bring, Ibis is a good speedy character, and so on.
Then again, I'm not a huge strategizing nut. I just aim to use the biggest, flashiest attacks as much as I can. :P

Tell me, have you ever tried to put Giado in something useful? like, not a Gespenst, and not a Huckebein as he sucks at dodging? Like, use him in the Giganscudo, or better yet, the Grungust Type 2? in OGs you can do even better and put him in the Armorlion. He's a god if you put him in something fairly hardy, and replenish has to be one of the best support seishins in the game. There is a reson Lat and Giado Had those Sp Drinks.
Edit: Now that I think about it, Lamia is pretty garbage unless you meet the downright ABSURD requirements for either of her units. the Ashaber makes her only useable, to make her decent, you really have to shoot for the Vaisaga.

Honestly, his comments annoyed me enough that I kept him out of the fights whenever possible.
And yet Ryusei is one of my favorite characters purely because of his comments...with Excellen coming in second for a similar reason.
Angelg is even worse in OGs, because Phantom Phoenix is locked until a certain level. It's like a kick in the balls for everyone not hardcore enough to get either of her secret units, or people who simply wanna go the different route and get Wurger L instead. hahahahahaha.

how am I supposed to make due with the suckitude of Kai, Arado, Seolla, Ibis, Carla, and Yuuki?
Suckitude of Kai? Kai is a grunt killing machine, I threw him up into a souped up R-Blade and he only stopped destroying things when their were no more chain attacks to perform. And having Arado and Seolla around enable you to use twin bird strike. How is that a bad thing?

Arado and Seolla are just lame imataions of Excellen and Kyosuke, and I don't even like those two either anyway.

I like the order in which you listed their names, even though you're absolutely crazy for hating those four. Arado is way more like Excellen than he is like Kyosuke, and Seolla is way more like Kyosuke than Excellen. I still can't figure out why you hate them though. They're exceptionally ballsy, and ballsy is a very attractive trait, especially in what's essentially a fighter-pilot (as close of a contemporary combat comparisson as can be drawn).

It's because they strike me as Metal Gear type characters, masters of millitary strategies and therefore useless statistics. rather than true heroes that defy all odds like Zengar, Elzam, Ryusei, Rai, Aya, Masaki, etc.

Not literally.....
Only by GaoGaiGar's definition of it:
"Statistics and Success rates are just scentific theory! A BRAVE SOUL WILL DEFY ALL ODDS!"
Edit: I dunno, I still upgrade characters I dont like, they just end up being behind, Excellen and Kyosuke were still doing 12k ish with rampage ghost to the final boss of OG1 (the stupid crystal thing.) and I will finally get around to Upgrading Arado and Seolla, but other things ultimately get in the way, Zengar, Elzam, Irms Type 1, R-Series-SRX, R-Blade, the Chokojin (RyuKouOh-KouRyuOh, preference to the latter.) etc.

Yeah, I try to do that as well, but in OG2, hell even in OGs where you can use the TBS system, It gets pretty hard if certain units fall behind and their damage doesnt add up enough to combat certain bosses shields-armor-regen.

Then I noticed who was posting it.
I know. Whenever the thread gets bumped, I think "maybe there's a new preview for OGG! Or even a TV commercial! " Then I see that the latest post is from Claw, and a little piece of my soul dies.

I'm not trying to complain, but, who else am I going to talk about this game with? that.... one forum is basically the SRW equivalent of No Mutants Allowed.
I.. Uh. Tend not to really worry about statistics myself. I just worry about strategy and maintaining my best dudes.
Strategy as applied to these games is entirely based in statistical math. That's all the game is, statistical math + battle-animations. There isn't anything else there.

That can be tough, too. I have a learning disability and can't plan out things very well. to quote Clerks I "get distracted by the flashing lights and fabulous prizes." of the fancier units. and maybe that's my problem, I just have a hard time spend major money on the units that don't tickle my fancy in order to have a sound plan for upgrading.
I have ADD, but I don't see what that has to do with anything. Knowing that there is absolutely nothing going on in the gameplay mechanics except statistical math, I wouldn't play these games at all if I didn't think stats class was fun. I've actually considered making up Excel sheets for it.

Yeah, it just happens that SRW isn't that bad of it say compared to Front Mission games, where I often can't get past the early parts of the games. as for RObot Action games, eh, I haven't really gotten to try an ACE game yet, I've played Gundam games like Journey To Jaburo and Federation Vs. Zeon, and I never could find them fun.
When it comes to strategy, I've allways been bad at RTS's, I assume for genetic reasons, since Autism sufferes have slower reaction times than others and I often suffer from "bad starts" in Real Time strategy games. (Ex. Starcraft, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes.). in stuff like general Action games, it's a bit more forgiving if I select a low difficulty setting. (For example I can play a Halo game just fine as long as I don't venture far from Easy-Normal, and stay the hell away from multiplayer.)
I Honestly through Turn Based Strategy games would be better for me. but I found games like Disgaea to be too complex and I never could learn it, plus, it wasn't something I was really into. then OG comes along and hooks me in it's dreaded clutches, then, soon after that, my friend introduces me to Alpha 3 and I get to sit and play a SRW game with untis from my favorite series, like GaoGaiGar, Macross etc and it just came full circle from there/
I would not play a Super Robot Dating-Sim, even if you could score with Miriya and Ryoko Subaru at the same time, because I find the mechanics of those games entirely unappetizing.

Does 'statistical math' take positioning into account?

Just curious.
Where appropriate, such as a grid-based strategy-RPG, it kind of has to now doesn't it? I mean what do you guys think all the hit probabilities are? Some sort of non-statistical form of probability? Perhaps from space?

I guess I'm just weird.
Angelg is even worse in OGs, because Phantom Phoenix is locked until a certain level. It's like a kick in the balls for everyone not hardcore enough to get either of her secret units, or people who simply wanna go the different route and get Wurger L instead. hahahahahaha.
When I first read this my thought was "Angelg sucks?"
Then I noticed who was posting it.
You disapprove of statistical math but you play S-RPGs? O_o
I Honestly through Turn Based Strategy games would be better for me. but I found games like Disgaea to be too complex and I never could learn it, plus, it wasn't something I was really into. then OG comes along and hooks me in it's dreaded clutches, then, soon after that, my friend introduces me to Alpha 3 and I get to sit and play a SRW game with untis from my favorite series, like GaoGaiGar, Macross etc and it just came full circle from there/
I'll admit, I laughed. :^:
Just curious.
Where appropriate, such as a grid-based strategy-RPG, it kind of has to now doesn't it? I mean what do you guys think all the hit probabilities are? Some sort of non-statistical form of probability? Perhaps from space?
