Barely. Barely still going. We banned a few really vocal trolls over the last couple of years, then people started migrating to google hangouts. There was a schism there and the board is becoming quieter and quieter. That Ranssite is still going in some form is probably more interesting than TTB still being a thing though.
Have your aims as to what kind of community you want to foster changed over the years? And what informs that? Do you get instruction from above (ie Khoo or whoever) about the things that should/shouldn't happen here, or is it all your own discretion?
I receive essentially zero instruction from Robert. If he has a problem with something I'm doing, he'd tell me. It's only happened once that I can recall.
My goal is generally "create an environment that I would want to spend time in". As I get older and pass the point where I would realistically have left the forums under my own steam, it's closer to "create an environment that people I consider good and worthwhile would want to spend time in". It used to be "govern the community based on a set of arbitrary and ill-thought out ethical principles", EG, "we can't ban that person because they haven't technically broken a rule".
Have you ever looked back and were surprised at how some things have managed to stand the test of time and crop up every once in a while (ie. Fucked on the boat)? Any personal thoughts on those sorts of things?
Personally, I wish certain parts of the forum would get over the whole "wang" thing.
As it was put somewhere, "a man reaches a certain age when he can no longer be part of groups with 'wang' in the title".

can you reveal what that once was?
I'm pretty sure it was banning of the N word, right?
Is there a risk of that happening in the foreseeable future, and is there any sense of a "plan" to move them elsewhere if that were to ever happen?
Khoo has repeatedly reassured me over the years that the forums are very important to him and Penny Arcade. He would fight to keep the forums if somehow they were In danger of being closed.
However, If that were to somehow happen, I don't think it would shut down as suddenly as last time so we should have time to make at least temporary arrangements. We're all pretty connected now anyway, we'll all find each other.

All the splinter boards/facebook groups I've ever seen either slowly dwindled and died off, or became pits of loathing towards this place and then died
I'm okay with their absence
Flying Stove was pretty awesome! It wasn't really a splinter board though.

Having just watched Sense8 on Netflix, this scares me.

Second, ceres. It seems like you might have the most emotionally draining of the forums to moderate (H&A). Does it ever get too intense for you and how do you handle stuff where you need to step away given it looks like you're the only one listed in that area as a mod?
Um, yeah, it can be tough. Once in a while if something particularly difficult for me comes up I deal with it, get Tube involved if necessary, and then step back for a certain period of time. I tell him what I need and ask him to keep an eye on things, not because he's ever demanded I do so but because I like to keep someone in the know. And he usually has half an eye on the place anyway.
I honestly feel a lot of the time like I don't do very much, but I've also had people tell me they couldn't be paid to do it. So maybe it evens out. Not much happens but when it does it can get rough.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Any mod : Is it ever frustrating to see a topic get derailed by forum in jokes, even though it's an off topic forum?
Always been curious about that
Personally, no. I often try and do it myself.
But thats just me.
Ooo, followup, have you ever seen a post that's derailing or breaking a rule or something, and right as you are about to infract them, you notice it's a fellow mod and just have to sigh and mutter their name?
YES
Is it just a mutter?
Do you not clench your fists and shout their name to the heavens as the rain pours?
It usually goes "dammit, [person]." It honestly hasn't been a consistent problem for me since like 2006.
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
most dedicated message boards have shrunk a lot since their internet heyday in the mid 2000s - did anybody keep numbers? what are trends like?
do Penny Arcade's new publications - podcasts, assorted online tv series - have any noticeable effects on forum activity? I'm guessing each PAX creates a bump of users who then vanish.

Not even once. No matter how many threads get derailed, I secretly yearn for more. Everything in here should evolve freely, and my favorite threads are often the ones that have no clear topic to begin with. Those usually end up being the threads that go to the best places.
Besides, if a group of people are deadset on having a legitimate, on-topic discussion about something in here, it usually perseveres around all the other unrelated off-topic posts about which pieces of beef jerky look most like celebrities or whatever.

Here's what I have from when I started doing them (2010) which was when the forum software at the time made it really, REALLY easy for me to figure out who was wanting to be included.
AS OF JANUARY 31, 2015 WE HAVE...250 active members. 2012 is our peak year and the census has declined from 2012 and 2013 but is an increase from 2011.
The results of the Census/Comparison to past years is as follows:
As of December 2014 we had roughly 250 active forumers.
2013: 273
2012: 335
2011: 224

It got pretty weird near the end there, but it was fun while it lasted.

I'd rather not do so by walking into my backyard and finding a bunch of tents and people leeching my wifi though.

I do a census every year. It's not super accurate, but hey.
Mick Jagger has to be a contender there.
probably really skewed by selection bias, though

I miss the "How Was Your Day" thread. None of the other threads care about what apples people are enjoying.

Well, that's what a census is. But considering this one you just have to say "census" in a thread, it's the easiest one to take.
