I remember there being some implied sexual humor in a few places, but I don't remember the Shantae games ever being outright weird and gross. But it's been a long time since I played one, so I might just be forgetting. Lord knows there's more uncomfortable / more weird sexual humor in this medium.
The first achievement you unlock for chopping down a bunch of trees in Minecraft is called "getting wood". The most popular game among elementary school kids! =D
Something like that makes me feel weirder than a cartoon sprite making an implied bj joke.
Most of the women (all that I saw but then I never finished the games) are half dressed and have jiggle physics on their tits. There were several conversations full of sexual innuendo and implied lesbianism and there was one mini puzzle that had you blind some monster by getting two underage girls to strip and shining lights on their "creamy skinned bodies". You got them to strip by getting another monster to drool on them. There was more but that's what I remember the most.
Again, that doesn't necessarily have to creep you out. It's a far cry from the repeated rape jokes in Valhalla Knights 3 or the sheer revolting ridiculousness of Conception II.

I remember a bit where two spring break girls strip down to bikinis to swim in a pool of moster saliva
That was really gross. Like, not necessarily even from a feminist perspective (although it's definitely valid to criticize it on those merits), just, the consistency (and smell) of saliva is NOTHING like water! Just eeeeeewwwwww
It's a really cute game, and toning down the bouncyness would be nice
A while ago, when they started showing animations of the game on Kickstarter, any comments about them being excessive were drowned out by Gaters and other geese
Really frustrating, because I really appreciated when they fixed Shantae's skin color days after criticism came up about it.

That does suck because Wayforward are pretty cool dudes and I'm sure they'd be willing to at least listen to and open a dialog with a group of people saying "hey we think your game seems pretty fun but some of the content makes us really uncomfortable".
If I remember right, she started out super pale ivory and people pointed out that it would more accurate if she was a darker tan or brown given the area's weather, her dress and the assumed racial make up of the fantasy place.
she was light skinned in the early art for the half genie hero kickstarter
when fans pointed it out, they claimed it was meant to fit the game's new color palette better but basically immediately went "oh shit, we hadn't really thought about the implications of that, we'll make her darker again, sorry"
edit: and yeah, really not gonna blame anyone turned off by the rampant innuendo and whatnot in the series
also shantae games are metroidvanias and those aren't everyone's cup of tea
Plus they're super creepy sexual in parts that left me feeling really uncomfortable. I won't go near one again.
what?
I didn't know that. i was about to play Risky's Revenge, too.
There's a very good chance they won't creep you out the way they creeped me out. As you can see, LOTS of people love the games.
The cheesecake in Shantae bothers me less than similar stuff in practically any other game, and I cannot for the life of me figure out a rational explanation as to why that would be the case.
I am not a fan of Shantae's "titty children" aesthetic
yup, damn, zing, that is exactly my problem with it. I just could not word it goodly.
Ya, Shantae is an amazing metroidvania, that you constantly feel a little ashamed to play and check over your shoulder a lot ready to try and explain the graphics
They're really just linear platformers with unlocking abilities. There isn't much in the way of unexplored areas to go back to (just a health pickup or two, usually).
Which, there's nothing wrong with that, I'm just not sure they quite fit the Metroidvania moniker.
Yeah, the cheesecakey-ness of the Shantae games is a bit much. It really feels rooted in a sort of late nineties/early zeroes attitude of 'sexy girls = empowerment!' that hasn't aged well. I'm hoping they'll tone it down in the future. Also hoping there's no forced stealth section in 1/2 Genie Hero, as they had one of those in Pirate's Curse which made me stop playing it in frustration. I think I hate forced stealth almost as much as I hate escort missions.
So switching gears, Jim Sterling had a 20 minute video of him playing Mighty No 9 and while he's pretty bad at the game, the game itself didn't look too bad.

For me it's showing Risky's ship...
like how creepy do those games get? would I enjoy them?

Yeah, that's probably a little rich for my blood

Basically sums what the devs are trying to achieve

I need to say that im pretty fucking proud of this

lulz
that's fair
the art is pretty fantastic, i.e. outside of the humanoids, but I totally get what you mean by this XD
If I remember right, she started out super pale ivory and people pointed out that it would more accurate if she was a darker tan or brown given the area's weather, her dress and the assumed racial make up of the fantasy place.
But if it's got a lot of creepy stuff in it then I'll probably pass on it.
So they changed it back
Watch a youtube of it and see if it bugs you.
The worst parody cover of John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillun"

I actually hope that Half Genie Hero pours on a lot more of that stuff

Well, no, there's two distinct styles of 2D Castlevania game, which is why the moniker isn't "Castlevania-likes"
