Anyone have more recommendations for bands that have that Belgian post-hardcore sound? Like Amenra or Eleanora?
I don't think I've ever listened to Amenra enough to "know their sound" or so, only have some stuff from like ten years ago lying around, but hopefully any of these are to your liking?
While looking for stuff on the tubes I found this! Pretty easy accessible-style screamo but I thought it was a nice little tune.
And I'm loving that the drummer gets to play the main role in the video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxdLY7ScF0k

I couldn't help myself and I caught a stream of Magma online.
If you've enjoyed the output so far I think you'll be pleased with the rest of it.
Also, purchase it and buy a t-shirt. These guys deserve it.
Hey guys, Opeth is coming to Toronto in October. I've never seen them live, but I didn't really care for Watershed or Heritage. While I liked Pale Communion alright for a prog album, I miss the Blackwater Park Era. How are they live these days?
The Sword is opening for them. They used to be amazing back in the day, now they're kind of boring and I've already seen them live.
I need the thread's advice. Tickets are $30-$90.
I saw Opeth a couple years ago on tour with In Flames, they did several old songs and I was pretty pleased by that. Go see them!

I just remembered these guys, really good record! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT_LEpeqj3Q
That's all I have, I think. Apart from the usual suspects, you know: Cult of Luna, The Ocean, etc. Light Bearer might work?

Here's my quick writeup of Magma:
This is Gojira's Black Album, Crack the Skye, Ghost Reveries, whatever you want to call it. It is an equilibrium point between their progressive tendencies and jaw-cracking heaviness, and the songs weave between the two rather skillfully (and seamlessly!) to form a really organic, natural-sounding album.
Questions for those wondering if Magma is all exploration and no slam are quickly answered with "The Cell", "Pray", and "Only Pain", the last two being some of the best tracks the band has ever made.
Somehow, the band has even managed to make the divisive single "Stranded" fit right in. It even feels heavier and more expansive sandwiched between "The Cell" and the Sabbathian instrumental "Yellow Stone."
Magma has something in common with the albums I mentioned up there: It is the "least heavy" of all the bands previous works. That being said, Gojira has one hell of a slide to go to get "radio friendly". While this album doesn't really revel too long in the previous works of the band (something I felt L'Enfant Sauvage did) as far as brutality, all the trademark Gojira weirdness is present and accounted for. "Stranded" is about as accessible as it gets here, folks. Magma is as dense and difficult a listen as anything that's come before it, and possibly more difficult because a lot of the driving, crushing riffs have been changed to spaced-out texturing, but make no mistake... when this album cranks it up, it absolutely wrecks shit as well as Gojira has ever done.
By now it's pretty well known of the tragedy that befell the band during this albums production, so I won't waste any time on it. Despite it's less brutal approach, Magma is a dark work. If we're talking subject matter, songwriting, and overall feel, then this is the most suffocatingly dark material the Duplantier Brothers and Co. have ever produced. While Crack the Skye was shimmering and vibrant with its approach, Magma is a dead, greyscale world.
I enjoyed the shit out of this album, but if your interests lay within the heaviness and driving nature of the bands old albums then I can see this not being your cup of tea... I strongly recommend you give it a shot, however.
I was never a huge Gojira fan, but I did like the Way of All Flesh well enough. But it didn't hold up well on repeat listenings too much for me. Mostly because I find Gojira's stuff to be somewhat repetitive. Most of the singles I've heard off Magma don't really do it for me. But they're coming to town with TessaracT in a bit, and I feel like they'll still be super fun live, so I might go anyways.

I'd never call Nails powerviolence? That thing is more like fast-as-fuck aggressive stuff, say a crust vinyl played on 45rpm or grind-ish material, mixed up with dirgy slow intermissions, isn't it?
Nails however just go for the fast-as-fuck part and are pretty damn great! I liked that new record, even though it kinda feels like an EP... It's just over so quick!

Considering the first LP was 13 minutes, this one is almost double in length ! At this rate, they'll soon have an hour long album with flutes and mellotron :rotate:
We're out of town for a wedding this weekend, which is a bummer because along with Nails on Sunday, Cancer Bats are playing Friday. I can't shut up about them, and have mentioned them a lot in this thread. They're probably my favourite live act. Happily, since they're local to Toronto, they play 2-3 times a year here
This came out back in Feb and was undoubtedly mentioned here but I just now came across it thanks to autoplay on Soundcloud

Seeing Voivod has got me listening to them with new ears something fierce this week. Funny how that works. Listening to Target Earth right now and really digging the guitar work from Chewy. Also gave Nothing Face a few listens and really enjoyed it.

Best band in the world.
Jamming the new Gojira this afternoon while I clean up apartment for Eldritch Horror game night.
Didn't care too much for the new Nails, for me that band is all explosion and production but no riffs that I haven't already heard a million times. I thought their first album was fun, but have been getting diminishing returns from their stuff since. I know I'm in the minority though so no biggie. I like Trap Them more, the lyrics are great and I know Bri will always throw some jangling weird riffs in there from out of left field.
The cover art and title for that new Skeletonwitch are great. The music is also good, but the vocals still seem overbearing and lack personality to me. I have no idea why that is, I certainly love those styles of vocals when done by others, and it's not like this guy doesn't try, but this has always been a sticking point with me for that band. Weird.
A couple new reviews going up later this weekend, I need to finish the Abnormality write-up.

So I'm probably going to order a few early Mercyful Fate and King Diamond albums off Amazon today. I listened to Abigail on youtube the other day, and I have to admit that I still don't like his voice, but sometimes immersing myself in an artist's discography is a good way to get me into a band.

Right on. You can't lose with anything they put out up to 1995! You'll have some great autumn night music on hand, perfect also for the earlier winter chills.
But for the sake of Lucifer and all that is unholy, don't buy The Graveyard from KD, it's awful.
It was on a Metal Blade video sampler disc I got from somewhere. I remember it also had videos for "Devoured by Vermin" from Cannibal Corpse and "Different Ways of Decay" from Crisis.
I actually randomly caught a Crisis show several years later, which was a pleasant surprise. During SXSW around 2004, I think, Novembers Doom were playing a The End Records showcase, so I went to see them and say hi to Paul and Larry. Crisis was also playing that show. What blew my mind was how tiny Karyn Crisis is.
That's interesting! I caught that solo(?) record she did last year at the start of this one, and while it wasn't bad in any way it never really grabbed me... Which was a shame because I remember ol' Crisis records from the aughts, holy fuck we're talking the 90's?, being pretty great! Probably haven't listened in ~8 years or so though, I better go revisit those...
Btw, the world's foremost industrial riprappers are fucking back! And they're just as glorious as they were ten years ago! Dälek'sAsphalt for Eden is a blast!

Dang, I'm actually digging what I'm hearing from her latest album:
Crisis was a wild band with a fairly unique sound, and they played pretty often around here back in the day. Her thrashing her dreads around was a staple, and I loved her voice back then.
I don't know if the earlier albums hold up very well, but I checked out her new project, and like Panda it didn't do much for me.
Hehe, it's nice seeing Dälek being album of the month in Terrorizer the same day I try dragging them into this very-much-not-hiphop thread
Terrorizer actually brought both Dälek and Cannibal Ox to my attention, many years ago...

My only comment on Nails is one day Kurt Ballou will produce a record without using HM-2 effect pedals.
And that will be the first sign of the Apocalypse.

Yesterday I decided that before I order any Mercyful Fate/King Diamond stuff, I should at least check out the local used CD stores first. I've lived in this town for two years and never visited any of the 3 used music stores! The one I went to yesterday seemed like it had a pretty lackluster selection until I turned a few corners and discovered they actually had a metal section that was not a part of their "rock" section. They also had a bunch of old game consoles and computers for sale, like a Commodore 64 and an Atari 800.
Alas, no King Diamond or Mercyful Fate. I'll try at least one more local store first before ordering on Amazon.

I guess you could include Utah's Cult Leader into this "sludgy but still melodic" thing at least I'm associating with the post-core description?
Edit: Nah, upon taking a listen CL probably is too vitriolic for this wholesome line of regular hc. Damn good though!
