Do we know for sure the tape is privileged? Or is that just what Trump's camp is saying?

    Because maybe their plan is

-Release damaging tape under the pretenses that it's privilidged
-Go, oh no, my lawyer had no authorization to release that tape
-Act indignant when it gets brought up during the trial as your base believes it's supposed to be privileged. Obviously another bit of evidence of how much of an out-of-control witch hunt this is.

But even that sounds too fucking stupid, even for Trump.
I think maybe you're misjudging just how stupid the President and his team are.

I feel this is ABSOLUTELY within the realms of how stupid these people are. After the "He just tweeted it out" moment, I've been waiting for Trump to yell out "Mueller didn't tell me he was a cop! He has to tell me he's a cop! It's in the Constitution!" as his defense.

These people aren't playing 10th dimensional chess. They're not playing chess. They're not playing checkers. They're trying to see how many checker pieces they can fit up their nose. And the sad thing is, they might still get away with this shit.

It's not the first time they've done this either. Don Jr. and "He just tweeted it out" for example.

They seem to like to try and get ahead of a story by saying 'Look, here's proof we tried but ultimately ended up not doing something illegal'... not realizing that sometimes, just making the attempt is almost as bad a crime.

The one thing I can't get over with this is how trump used the term "inconcievable" to describe cohen recording his phone calls.

Putting aside the entirely ethical reasons a lawyer would do this, lets just take into consideration how many lives trump has ruined; how many people he's screwed over out of a combination of callousness, spite, greed, ineptitude, vanity and/or ammusement. We're literally talking about thousands of people in the past 35 years.

So how is it that you can sit there and use the word "inconcievable" to describe your sleazy lawyer taking steps to ensure that he wasn't going to get screwed in the ways you directed him to do to others?

    Very good brain indeed.

I also appreciate the irony of claiming he had tapes of meeting with Comey alongside the shock that someone would dare record him.

"Attempted murder"...Really! Do they give anyone a Nobel prize for "attempted chemistry"?

I guess the Trump team saw that episode and took it literally.

Projection. As usual. He didn't actually have Comey tapes, but this is the reaction he expected when he claimed he did, not "Pfffft tapes, he says. What a maroon."

This is incredibly fucked up that a law that should have been written to protect strippers (it wasn't, but it should have) is being used against them. And while this seems like a conspiracy against Stormy Daniels by the police officers involved, as in they conspired to arrest her on a bullshit charge, I don't think the conspiracy goes any further than that. To me, it seems like a few MAGAesque cops decided to harrass a known enemy.

Extremely fucked up but not very surprising that law enforcement officers are abusing their power against a political enemy.

Every law restricting sex work is written to protect police, politicians, and priests

from having their careers, self-esteem, and reputations damaged as a result of their being charged, 86'd, and publicly shamed by brothel staff and management.

So, it was the Trump team that leaked the thing? The theory is that they decided to bring a scandal involving Trump paying off Playmates in order to distract from the treason/Putin scandal, which itself may have been made a thing to distract from the whole children in concentration camps thing.

    This is the dumbest timeline.

I think at a certain point the campaign strategy genuinely became to overwhelm the press with scandals so they could never focus on one thing for long enough that it really stuck. So now they're repeating it.

Though it was less to keep him "honest", and more to cover their own asses when he inevitably lies.

He wouldn't care that there were lawyers in the room. Lying is second nature to him. But when the inevitable "My lawyer told me I could do that/My lawyer didn’t tell me that important thing", the second lawyer is there to protect the firm, not Trump.

There's a reason so many law firms won't take his business. Well... non payment. But there's a second reason, that he lies to, and about, his legal counsel.

Though he DOES care about his ego, and estrangement, or a divorce that she initiates, could be a blow he couldn't accept.

There would obviously be internal pressure to avoid the latter and be cordial with the former, but she may have a breaking point. A divorce would be unprecedented, but nearly everything this administration does, already is.

As to the point you raise though, I don't think that they are considering that as PR move. They don't think one step ahead really. Most of their decisions are reactionary, and then trying to calm down the outrage. It's so f'n clownshoes.

Wasn't the scuttlebutt that Trump has some sort of bullshit clause that he has to be married for a specific amount of time, or else his wife will get nothing in the divorce. (And then he went and divorced his last wife right before that time was up?) or was that just rumors?

We've only heard Trump lawyer's characterization of what's on the tape, not the tape itself. Cohen's lawyers supposedly disagree with their assessment, but will not comment on specifics since it is under investigation. That's why they got out ahead of this story, to present their own twisted version of the facts. Unlike Don Jr., its going to be a good while before more objective evaluation is possible, and they just care about shoring up their media performance right now.

There is a very good chance that they have lied about what's on the tapes to force all the media outlets to later print retractions, which will help to reinforce a fake news crooked liberal media angle during the midterms.

You don't issue a retraction in that case. You run a story about how they misrepresented the facts of the case to the public, and follow it up with a primer on consciousness of guilt.

You SHOULD. The question will be, if they will.

Only Republicans are worse than the media at being chickenshit about doing what's right.

If it's as damaging to Trump as Cohen's lawyer is suggesting, shouldn't he be petitioning for it to be released? Cause the argument that it's privileged yet the person hiding behind that privilege is releasing it and potentially be disingenuous about the contents, seems like a silly procedural rule.

If the tape becomes a part of the trail, will we get to listen to it? Not read transcripts but listen to Trump's actual voice talking about paying off a playmate. It seems insane to me that Trump's team would think that's a good thing for the American public to hear.

Unless Trump, being a compulsive liar, somehow denies the affair to Cohen while instructing him to pay her off. I could totally see Trump doing that.

We’ve just become accustomed to numbers in the tens of thousands with emails and text messages between these people who are clearly the twitter generation that cannot hold a conversation for longer than three seconds at a time.

Maybe these recordings are very rich in content, like an old timey sitcom that packed whole character arcs in 22 minute episodes that now take full seasons or more of hour long episodes.

My brain is bleeding from all of this, so I apologize for the tortured metaphor.
