So there was a dev live stream earlier today. Wowhead has a write up here.
Guess what, if you thought that maybe azerite traits should save based on what spec you're in or that they shouldn't cost money to reforge than you are dumb and also bad at game design. There is a line where he literally says that they want to reward somebody who only plays one spec verses somebody who swaps specs often.
I said this in the WoW thread, but their argument of 'people end up swapping out items to maximize stats all the time when they change specs, and we didn't want azerite to be any different' is at least consistent, if not frustrating.
Counterpoint
Set pieces from last expansion worked no matter what spec you were in

Azerite doesn't have much in common with previous tier sets

I disagree. They are armor pieces that provide extra bonuses outside of pure stats.
And they changed their bonus powers based on your spec.

I think instead of hoping people psychically understand they're intended to carry multiple azerite pieces for different specs and that the respec mechanic is basically only there in case you accidentally click the wrong thing on the ring, they should just say fuck it and make you able to change active azerite traits at any time for free.

I have to agree with Munkus. Last expansion I had a set of trinkets and rings in my bag I swapped out when I tanked, Leggos too, but my Tier stayed on all the time
Now I have that, minus Leggos but plus Azerite gear.
yeah that's a good point, with tier you'd wear that no matter what your spec most of the time which cut down on the amount of stuff you had to carry spares of with slightly more optimized secondaries.

I think the weird wall people are placing between azerite gear and regular gear is leading to the difference in perception between the two, and is often ill-advised
The thing is that Ion specifically states that they didn't want the traits to feel like talent choices that just happen to be tied to your gear instead of your character, but it doesn't matter how much gold it costs to respec them, that's exactly what they are. Mostly boring talents that just give flat buffs and occasionally alter how a spec might play, up until that trait gets nerfed into the ground.
Just accept how y'all designed the system and at the very least let us save azerite choices per spec.
there is a conceptual void left by the removal of tier sets and azerite is gonna be put in it, square peg in round hole though it might be.
That's probably true, but is causing a lot of faulty feedback along with the genuine issues, and if it is that, I don't mind Blizzard calling out the community on it, rather than just capitulating and actually treating azerite like a tier replacement.

Also, other than trinkets, weapons and the dumb fucking Azerite gear, my damage and tank sets are exactly the same so I dunno wtf they are talking about.

Is that because they have the same stat priority, or because you just haven't farmed other pieces yet to match each spec?

They have roughly the same stat priority. I want haste and strength in DPS and I want haste and strength in tank.

A 370 with bad secondaries is much better than a 370 with zero beneficial traits, is the sticking point. I’d be fine with playing shadow with a wacky, bad stat priority when I swap to it from holy, but it’s annoying that I can’t use my higher ilevel azerite for shadow essentially *at all*.
there's a world quest in zuldazar for a toy right now

we start a questline where we end up meeting N'Zoth and he sees our azerite armor and necklace and he just slaps the shit out of us with a tentacle and it breaks all the equipped and pieces in our bag and deletes them instantly while we get a debuff that doesn't allow us to equip any more and they have an excuse to move back to tier sets
I didnt take logs but I did stream the thing if you want to see things go horribly wrong
or you can marvel at how good Walt and I are at the orb, aside from that one time I let him die before I realized I can just moonfire walk the entire thing
I'm trying to figure out why I did more DPS on G'huun himself than Zau did when we did about the same on the gibbering horrors
mongoose bite might be a bad talent for this fight? that's all I got
hmm maybe you were out of melee range a lot? seems like I had a lot more white damage on him despite swinging for about the same amount
wait was zau on orb duty in part 2? that's probably why if so
Honestly though, for full disclosure, I'm gonna be looking at these logs pretty closely and maintaining our raid size based on mechanics performance the next time we get there
so if you were bad on orbs today, don't also be bad at orbs next week
Based on other parses, our damage is actually pretty good. If we can actually manage to not fuck it up, only having to actually kill 1 add in phase 2 is really good, numbers-wise.

What toy?
it's very boring, you just play a quiet roar sound effect, only of value to toy completionists

or you can marvel at how good Walt and I are at the orb, aside from that one time I let him die before I realized I can just moonfire walk the entire thing
gotta TOUCH THEM
i was in the orb dodging zone every moment of every attempt and only had 11 hits
dodge the damn orbs
Still I blame Fodo

So focus on doing mechanics.
I submit exhibit A for my defense
I got hit by an orb in a corner before the beam even came down. I cannot be blamed for everyone elses shenanigans.
