I mean, thus far my favorite video game adaptation is the Castlevania series because it took the spirit of the games, and it proceeded from there. I know some folks complain about their potty mouths; I think it's comedy gold when *I Eat Vamps For Breakfast* Trevor Belmont tells *Mid Twenties Teen Angst* Alucard to "eat shit and die" and the other character comes back with, "yes, fuck you". Because we also get things like all three kicking the ass of Gaibon and Slogra, or the moment when Trevor threatens a demon with a stick in jest, then proceeds to kick the thing's ass (partially on accident).

Basically, it really well distills what I've pictured could happen in a Castlevania game without trying to adapt the format of the original game.

Other notables would be the Prince of Persia movie, at least the first Silent Hill movie, and even the Ratchet and Clank movie was a fine adaptation of the spirit of the materials it was inspired by.

Okay, our event was this morning, and it was great helping young kids break boards and to volunteer at the check-in desk so I got a great idea of just how many people came out in support of a great cause. Specific to me, the following people kick ass and are going into a drawing for $20 in Steam wallet funds.

Backlog challenges are good for more than enjoying games you've put off for too long, they're also great to surrendering middling junk to the abyss! Enter, The Order of the Throne: A King's Challenge. Even the promise of a quick 3-4 hour playthrough won't get me back into this excruciatingly earnest and chipper game about some dude looking for some other dudes lady. A total bore. So long!

The next two stories might aswell be considered a part of the main plot, they keep things going.

They resolve dangling subplots and introduces a few things. They also introduce some of the cooler monsters.

You can stop but if you're interested in the story, I'd suggest checking them out. The second campaign in particular provides a much better sense of closure for the cast to me.

I can't find any media on it but there's a new indie Wipeout-like called Pacer in the works.

At SXSW, I played the demo competitively with 3 other guest opponents in a large demo booth. I, a Redout fan, naturally get accostomed to the controls and wreck face. The devs commented I clearly played something like it before, and I told them I play Redout. They were aware of Redout and made a creative choice to have Wipeout style airbrakes, instead of Redout's reliance on weight shifting (not that its isn't there). It had higher production values than Redout and was really impressive.

I also got to play A Dual Hand Disaster (ADHD): Trackher, which turned out to be only 5 bucks on Steam, a phenomenal value

    Northgard
is a RTS-lite board game where you take on the role of Rig, the heir of the High King, on a quest for revenge after his father is assassinated and the family heirloom is stolen and taken to the mystery island known as Northgard.

There, Norse myth has become real, with the lands teeming with kobolds, wolves, giants and other dangers that lurk in the wilds. But nothing is as dangerous as your fellow Norse as you strive to survive, thrive, and conquer these new lands.

There are about 6 or so clans that you will unlock during the course of the story, levying their particular strengths to help you thrive in these cold lands. The Stage clan gets a starting advantage and can produce Valor while the Goat clan has the unique Sheepfold structure to produce food from these fluffy animals. You'll climb a rudimentary build tree as you use scouts to explore the land, produce food and wood to build up your settlement, colonize new lands (and an escalating cost), provide homes for your people, generate Krowns to maintain your military and keep your people happy--all while the threat of winter looms. Loremasters and raiders can produce lore to unlock the tech tree to give you advantages in Trading, Crafting and Warfare. Stone and Iron found in the wilds can be used to upgrade your buildings and units respectively. Lastly, your warriors will go to war, slaying wildlife, native inhabitants, or rival tribes alike.

Usually, this all runs pretty smoothly. Like any RTS, levels will have a specific challenge, surprises and layouts that make repeat playthroughs of a level much easier to prepare for. The mechanics are also solid, getting a thriving economy going, exploring the land, keeping your people alive and bouncing them around jobs before you can keep them busy at one thing can keep things fresh though you'll probably fall into a standard build. Happiness is a mixed bag: it influences the total output of your economy, the recruitment rate of new villagers, and fighting power of your military units, but it can be weirdly fluctuating at times and can totally screw up an otherwise smooth playthrough as you try to shuffle around a new brewer/skall hall to make the little twits happy. There seems to be something linked to upgrading your housing but it was never made explicit. Still, I managed well enough and depending on the clan (which are nice and unique enough and thrive in different situations that I had favorites balanced by pragmatism for what a mission called for.

The graphics are a nice and simple animation, with a nice pretty setting. Unfortunately the foliage can block your view of units and microing units can be a bit frustrating. Some enemies can be cheesed and true to the board game aspect, some enemies just won't chase you past the borders of their tile so you can beat them down, bow out to heal, and come back and finish the job. Not a bad thing per se, just gets use to.

Overall, if you're looking to scratch that RTS itch but would like some Meeple Management board game style I would recommend Northgard.

    King of Fighters XIII:
So, since King of Fighters XIII was the newest game I owned that was a thing I could properly beat, I decided to give it a playthrough. It's got a story mode, which is what I played through. This is the first King of Fighters game I've played, so I really have no idea where the story fits into any of the other games.
Basically there's an evil company or something trying to resurrect Orochi, which I guess is some powerful bad thing. And they're hosting the King of Fighters tournament above it for energy or something? Anyway, there's the main group that's doing it, with this dude named Ash who's working with them and seems to be both powerful and important, but also relatively independent. And there's the childhood friend of Ash's trying to find and stop him because he's been getting all distant with her ever since joining up with this lot of villains. And there's also some sort of government/military organization trying to stop it, who are apparently the good guys. The story itself plays out over a bunch of voiceless, mostly motionless videos with text overlayed on an image that's panning. On occasion, there's lip flapping or actual movement in the scenes. It was honestly one of the most barebones presentations I've ever seen in a game. Every once in a while, there will be a branching path, which will take you to more story and maybe a fight. These fights get progressively more difficult as you progress through the story. You can choose any team you want for them and you'll be locked into that team for as long as you keep going, until you fail. Each of the fights has some pre-fight dialog, and you have different opponents/dialog depending on which team you choose. If you lose the fight, you get the bad ending and you're spit back out to the storyboard menu. You can then choose where you want to start from and which team you want to play as. This lets you go down each of the different branches until you find the right path that will take you to the end of the game. Honestly, it wasn't that bad of a system. I liked how it encouraged you to see the different paths available in the game to find the right one. Though I guess you'd miss that if you lucked out into the right path.
I somehow managed to save it for the last. The final boss was extremely unpleasant to fight and I only ended up winning because I cheesed it out using pokes and trips. I think I tried beating that boss like 20 some times, trying a bunch of different teams to see if I could get into a groove with any of them. There's also a post-boss boss, but he ended up being a fair bit easier and I managed to beat him in one try. Anyway, the fighting in the game seemed fine, though I don't think I'm really into KoF's fighting style compared to other fighting games I've enjoyed. Since this is a fighting game, I think it was decent enough in that regard to recommend it if someone is interested in a fighter just for the local/competitive stuff. If you're here for a story, it's a hard pass. It's also especially cheap, which is how I ended up with a copy of it, lol.

    Iconoclasts:
This game was amazing! I saw a Quick Look of it ages ago and that piqued my interest, but I never actually got around to playing it until now. Man, they really went hard for the story in this game and it paid off. It does such a good job of exploring so many interesting themes, from religion to environmentalism to finding your place in society and how each of those interact. It's got some very well written characters with their own motivations and backgrounds and how those lead them to exploring those aforementioned themes as they progress through the game. The writing itself is also great, striking a good balance between serious scenes exploring the main themes/story and more lighthearted/humorous scenes. I'm kind of mixed on the art in the game. The characters all look pretty great and have great animation to them, and they emote very well, especially considering the pixelized nature of their characters.
But I think a lot of the environmental art can look pretty bland. The gameplay is a metroidvania type thing, moving through different environments and locations as the story progresses. There were some neat puzzles, I guess, but for the most part I wasn't super into the gameplay. I think there's better metroidvania's out there if you're looking just for the gameplay side. It just felt kind of tedious moving through the world and backtracking so much (which I get is a staple of metroidvanias) and it felt like there was too much gameplay "filler" between the story stuff I actually cared about. But the real meat of the game here is the characters, the stories, and the themes the game explores. And in my opinion, it ranks up there with some of the best on those fronts. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone, it's really cool.

    S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
I ended up playing this because it was the oldest game I owned that I hadn't actually beat. Which was kind of impressive since it was fairly far away from being the oldest game I owned. I guess I just actually played games I bought back then before all this backloggery business started. Anyway, I remember it being buggy and having low fps when I got it back in like 2008. In the more than a decade since then, the FPS has gotten much better, but the bugs still remain. I played with the STALKER: Clear Sky Complete mod, which added some improvements and bug fixes and cleaned up some textures and whatnot, but didn't really affect the core gameplay much. Even with that, I ran into some pretty obnoxious bugs, especially towards the end of the game. There was one section where it would literally crash every time I made it to a certain part of an area and I had to download a separate fix for the game and just sprint past that area hoping it wouldn't crash. I also ran into other crashes elsewhere and some other smaller bugs like progress in a mission taking too long to update or allies getting stuck or whatever. The game itself was pretty cool for the most part. It starts you off with not many supplies and tasks you with helping some allies capture some outposts. It has a sort of dynamic system, where there are enemy and allied patrols wandering around doing their own thing on the map. This becomes much less relevant as the game progresses, which is kind of a bummer, because that starting section was pretty cool. You also find and upgrade your guns and armor as the game progresses, in a pretty neat progression, slowly getting newer and better weapons that you can also then upgrade. You ended up going from place to place, helping people out in order for them to help you out. You meet and become friendly with a number of different factions, who don't really like each other that much, and can use their facilities/merchants/upgraders when you're in the area. There's a whole faction system, which you would think would be more important based on the start, but really didn't come into play at all for me in the game. Another big gripe I had was that the ending few bits of the game were a lot less interesting than the stuff preceding it. In fact, I think the game overall has a pretty steady downward trend as you progress through it, becoming somewhat less and less interesting. By the end, you're fighting armies of dudes as you move through linear levels and end up with this huge boss fight where they just jam some weapons on you out of nowhere and have you shoot the guy you've been chasing over and over again until he's dead. It was really unsatisfactory. I think there's enough cool stuff in the game, especially in the first half as you're newly exploring the world and building yourself up and everything still seems big and mysterious, to warrant a tentative recommendation. But the latter part of the game, combined with some really harsh gamebreaking bugs leaves me pretty on the fence about it. I guess, play at your own risk. If you've read that and are still interested, go for it.

Personally I felt Clear Sky didn't really add anything interesting narratively or mechanically compared to Chernobyl or Pripyat, and wasn't worth playing unless you really needed more of a STALKER fix...but then I think replaying the others is a better use of time.

I hope that 2021 STALKER sequel is still in the works, because Metro games are too linear to scratch that itch.

Gaijin's absolute warren of account bullshit is incredibly poorly though out. I tried to play the game by first logging in through steam, only to find that it changed my username by adding a bunch of numbers. I should note, it did not ask me to change my name or let me change it myself, it just automatically added a bunch of numbers since there was already an account with that name... I guess. The only way to change your nickname is through Gaijin's website, so you need to link your account to your gaijin account... but for some reason you're not allowed to link to an existing account. And I think once you login with steam you just can't login with gaijin. I know at least you can't login with an existing account, because it asks you to link to your steam account and if you played the game through steam first you can't link them.

And apparently linking your steam and gaijin accounts is important to be able to access the store, access support forums etc.

Which sort of begs the fucking question of why logging in through steam is even an option. It should just have you login through Gaijin and link your accounts, and if you don't have a Gaijin account just... ask you to make one. I just cannot conceive of how they thought this was a good way to do this.
