How do I Tenchu in a modern age? (Aside from Sekiro.)
I don't believe they have aged well. It's PS1 era controls (so poor camera control). The wikipedia article gives a fairly good overview of the franchise, which basically peaked with the PS1 era games.
Apropos of not much, I wish they had made it so positively progressing NPC questlines raised your Unseen Aid value. Having it be this value that could only decline, underscoring your lack of success, makes it feel extra bad. And it'd be nice if there were more meaningful rewards from the questlines.
On the whole, the Dragonrot/Unseen Aid dynamic feels a bit underdeveloped.
And similarly underdeveloped, nothing ever appeared in the Offering box by Hanbei. Is that something that only comes into play if you kill an NPC?
The offering box is for missable items I believe. I had 2 things show up in it after I progressed the story and one of the zones changed a bunch.
If you kill NPCs their unique goods show up in the offering box.
Dragonrot is really nothing to worry about, it seems once you cure NPCs that have it they can never get it again. And there are more than enough uses to cure everyone.

The last major Tenchu game Tenchu: Shadow Assassins for Wii - it was terrible.
Prior to that were two terrible titles on Xbox 360.
Tenchu: Dark Secret on DS was even worse.
Tenchu: Time of the Assassins on PSP was also terrible.
The PS2 had 2 Tenchu titles that were both excellent. Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven (also on OG Xbox - vid on last page features a secret unlockable character) and Tenchu: Kurenai (Tenchu: Fatal Shadows in the west.) I loved both so much I played them to the ends of the Earth and yes, there's a lot of Tenchu in Sekiro - but Sekiro's stealth isn't as sharp and manipulatable as Tenchu's, and Sekiro's... everything is infinitely better than Tenchu's (world, story, enemies, combat, general richness, controls - frickin' everything).
I know it began its development as a new Tenchu title, but Sekiro is like... it's almost like the guy who made Souls decided he wanted to make God of War/Devil May Cry. Kinda.
It's Tenchu + Zelda + Souls + Devil May Cry/God of War + secret sauce. The secret sauce being its unbelievably good swordplay.
Like I cannot think of a game that does swordplay better than this.

You can definitely get Repeat Essences. I think it's just that all the Mob Vendors are in the pool of NPCs (among other random folk), which dilutes the chance that someone you care about gets the Rot twice.
Like I cannot think of a game that does swordplay better than this.
Only improvement I can think of is replacing the danger symbol with their weapon glowing red. The symbol consistently distracts me from what the enemy is doing until I memorize their patterns.
Tenchu: Shadow Assassins, Tenchu Z and Shadow Assault: Tenchu were published by From in Japan. Hell, Shadow Assault: Tenchu was developed by them. From is pretty familiar with the genre.
Still, if your were to play one, I'd say Wrath of Heaven is the best one to try.

Yeah, there is pretty much nothing like it, it’s a very unique take on a combat system, and they do a great job of exploring the design space inside of it. Every boss you have to learn like a dance.
I loved the Ashina Elite miniboss, for instance. It was such a sharp transition from “this is impossible” to “this is easy”.

Speaking of previous Tenchu info, I feel like this is also pertinent:
Activision purchased the rights to this game from Sony Music Entertainment, who originally published the game in Japan. However, Activision sold the rights to the Japanese game publisher FromSoftware in 2004. FromSoftware's rights agreement does not include games previously published by Activision.

Yeah, the game started as a collaboration between From and Activision on a new Tenchu but as it began to diverge and become more souls-like both parties felt like a new IP was a better idea.
You can definitely get Repeat Essences. I think it's just that all the Mob Vendors are in the pool of NPCs (among other random folk), which dilutes the chance that someone you care about gets the Rot twice.
Do new NPCs have a higher chance of getting rot? I've found that the only time I get new dragonrot is usually just after I've met someone new.

The timeline seems to be that Aquire were the devs for the first two Tenchu games, K2 LLC were the devs for the next two, while From were the devs for the same games on the PSP, K2 were also the devs on the PSP only game and the 360 game, Polygon Magic were the devs on the NDS title, and Aquire came back as the devs for the Wii/PSP title.
But as publishers, Activision were the US publishers of the first game, and they bought the rights to Tenchu from SME after that first game, And published the next few games, but starting with the third game, From was publishing them in Japan while first Activision then Sega published them in the US for the PS2 run. After that, From was the Publisher of the games in Japan while various other companies have published outside there.
Which is a damn long way to explain how and why Activision and From are both in the credits, I think. They've both been tied up in the game series before it morphed into Sekiro, and it seems like Activision and From have a solid working relationship on the previous concepts.
I just think it's really interesting to see how far back their relationship goes with this.

I was satisfied I partitioned well when it opened up. That area looked so open I decided "I will commit to taking several hours to painstakingly look at every corner of this now, so that I know I have done it later".

I'm gonna post my secret in the Castle area:
Where you get in on the upper level of the castle, through the back. You go into the main room and take a right, there is a cozy area where two samurai are sitting. In the back there is a sword display and I walked up and accidentally kicked it and thought well that looked cooler than it was... It felt like there should be something there though so I thought back at that obvious wall-hug door in dilapitated temple. Tried hugging the center wall and flipped around to a secret room with a chest and prayer bead in it.

Man I was beating my head against an early miniboss until I realized I could sneak up around and do a jumping deathblow to take out one of his health bars. Then it was just a matter of being patient and chipping away at him.
And then I found a bell and gave it to Buddha and went to another place where I found some sweet prosthetic gear.

I am finding the sub-bosses pretty easily, it's just the part of killing them I am struggling with
Got to the Hirata Estate and the spear dude is brutal. I know I can get it, I Just need to stop wandering off in a different direction after 3 attempts and just stick at it. I did find good ol' tubby the drunkard so I guess I know where I need to go for them prayer beads.
Okay I better kill Genichiro before my attempts get to three digits
Pls advise
I found Mikiri counter to be really useful against him, but mostly in the first phase when you can predict it really easily. Second phase, he switches it up with a sweep. Third phase, hop around like a bunny rabbit and hope he doesn't hit you with lightning? I got nothing, it's a rough fight at the end.

Okay phase 1 deflect everything he's got and just wail on him. I like the Flow Like Water attack skill or whatever it's called - just hammer on him and when he flashes the danger move back off and Mikiri counter.
Phase 2 same thing but now danger could be a grab or sweep and it's hard to tell but the range is pretty short - dash out and come right back in.
Phase 3 jump when he lightnings. If it hits you with lightning, good! Hit R1 before you hit the ground to hit him with his own lightning for a stun and big posture damage.
In all 3 phases the best posture damage on him is deflecting his long string.
Parry parry attack (it won't interrupt but it adds big posture damage) parry parry parry parry parry.
I'm on round 4 and I'm gettin' there ^.^

First off, he has three phases and the third is the hardest one by far so don't spend consumables in the first two phases other than your gourd.
In phase one you don't wanna just spam attack. You want to swing, brief delay, swing, then react to the third part. If he goes to swing, you parry. If he goes to shoot his bow or back up, you swing. If he leaps in the air, parry the blow then mash O after you parry and you'll pretty much automatically Mikari counter his deathblow. If he jumps in the air and starts shooting arrows, mash L1 even if you get hit by a few arrows and blow em. If he starts to move around you and your sword swings don't interrupt his movement he's about to do a flurry attack, so mash L1 a bunch and parry that shit.
Phase 2 is mostly the same, except he starts to do a horizontal deathblow and a grab deathblow on you instead of always thrusting. I found it best to just back off when the warning kanji popped up to start, but after I got used to it I was able to Mikari his thrusts and jump on his dumb stupid head when he did the horizontal.
Phase 3 is very similar to phase 2 in a lot of respects. He always starts out this thing with a lunging deathblow and usually follows up with a grab deathblow. He has a lot of deathblows in the phase and the lightning ones will ruin your shit if you get hit, so I found the best thing to do was to just jump the fuck away when he started one. Keep the same hit, small delay, hit, react that you've been doing. If he jumps up in the air and isn't doing lightning, he's gonna do the regular downward slash attack that you've been parrying for two stages, and he follows up with a regular horizontal slash instead of a deathblow that you can just parry. Keep up the pressure and don't put a ton of space between you.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Alright, Fromsoft, you've made games before that shit on me, but this is the first game you've made which literally shit on me.
And then to add insult to injury, I beat the boss except
THE FUCKING GIANT HEADLESS MONKEY JUST PICKS UP HIS HEAD AND STARTS FIGHTING ME WITH A SWORD.
Bravo, Fromsoft. I really did not see that coming.
Ha-ha! Got 'im on like round 10. The great Beaver is correct, but I say be more aggressive.
Get in there and just wail on him. When he deflects, parry whatever he's got next or chase him down and continue beating on him.
The most important thing to be able to do is parry his long string - as you can see in the vid that's where most of my poise damage is coming from. He keeps doing the string right up throughout round 3, and the timing in round 3 is identical so you can still get the cheap shot in between the first two hits and the rest of the string. In round 3 he follows it up with a deathblow but just back out or counter it.
And for the record I killed him like a half-hour ago but then I had to edit in ShareFactory and YouTube is taking forever to get it to a decent resolution.

At least 4. Two on ps1, one on ps2, I think a ps3 one.

This game should be called "bosses die twice", because nobody in this game fucking dies when you kill them.

Also, I hate how I miss all these 'obvious' paths in each area. I left the castle without even knowing there was a boss on the top level.
