I have actual research in my notes that I can dig up showing that open offices are cancer, if anybody cares.
They reduce productivity, increase stress, and promote the spread of infectious disease.
Both auditory and visual distractions contribute to stress, so using glass doesn't help. (Also glass reflects sound so it's a terrible noise barrier)
Full offices are best. Tall cubicles are a close second.
The sad thing is that we've fucking known this since the 1950s, but as Upton Sinclair said, "it is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it."
is it cheaper, accounting for turnover and reduced productivity?
I suspect it's not cheaper - i.e. that it IS cheaper in the long run to treat workers better, a la Costco / WF - and that makes me wonder why they haven't changed
The only reason cubicles and open offices are cheaper is if you want to change layout for whatever reason.
If you have an office space and you're not planning to rejigger it to focus your feng shui or sell it in 5 years, it's still cheaper to just build the offices and give people a private space.
Worst case you just have to move furniture around and reprint a plaque inside the office.
You can fit a lot more people per square footage in an open office than you can in cubicles
And you can fit more people in cubicles than in full offices
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.
even the most horny office will spend very little time fucking in their offices compared to the amount of time someone will be droning on while leaning over the cubicle while they were on their way to get coffee
We had one lady that was a sex addict when I worked for shit co and instead of addressing the problem directly with the person they decided to just try and police her computer usage and put her right at the front door.
As soon as my boss wasn't looking, whoops porn.
I think it made my boss uncomfortable to talk about because he was a born again evangelical cult member type person.
Rookie mistake. You NEVER bet on shame. Shame will take a dive every time.

This past month, we here at CodeWeavers and the wider Wine community suffered a devastating loss. Our friend and colleague, Józef Kucia, died at the age of 28.
Józef first contributed to Wine in March of 2012, showing remarkable skill with Wine’s D3D technology. He became a key contributor to Wine, submitting over 2,500 patches. He also contributed to other open source projects including Mesa and Debian. Józef founded and led the vkd3d project and provided insight and guidance to the Vulkan working group.
This August, Józef took an extended vacation to the Tatra mountains to explore the longest and deepest cave in Poland, Wielka Sniezna ("Great Snowy Cave"). While exploring, he and another member of his group of six became separated by an unexpected flow of water. Despite an extensive rescue operation, Józef and his companion died.
If you simply must go outside don't go into a cave
Yeah this is "eagles may fly but weasels don't get sucked into jet engine" territory. Though is it bad that as someone 9 years older than this guy I was happy he died of like misadventure and not a horrifying disease?
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

don't need to worry about how to efficiently utilize office space if you just let everyone work from home

Working from home is good for some people but (worried glance at the Mom thread) also a lot of people meet important social needs through work and it definitely isn’t for everyone

Literally a nightmare scenario to me. Like In the recent tomb raider game they had parts where Laura is trapped in tiny space and its one of the few times I was legit like mentally in anguish playing a game. Just full on "jesus this is a fear of mine playing out right in front of me."
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

My boss worked from home at amazon a couple decades ago (shit decades? oh god wasted youth) and he said he'd never work from home again long term because he started to go stir crazy from technically working with people but never interacting with them in person. Also it made his home feel too much like his work even when he wasn't working.

Reminds me of Richard Dreyfus saying the thing that screwed him the most up on Jaws wasn't anything on set, but when he was in like post production and one of the actresses was doing sound recording for jaws like taking her under water that, that fucked him up.

Chu I’m being forced to work today and I’m mad >:[
I spent the morning resolving technical issues with two of my underlings partially coding partially on the phone, then the early afternoon writing up a many pages long description of our project so that the larger group at my company working on this topic has perfect visibility into it, then just now on the phone and by myself at a cafe working on revising/editing/fixing be main idea on the proposal for phase 1b (or whatever) of the project
After this I need to do more coding/data processing too since other people can’t be trusted grrrr

I don't either, but I do like the idea I drive to the office and drive home. Its a nice separation and lets me not have the danger of "they need me I have to work from home" since nope. My wife has to work from home and its miserable.

I don't think the solution is everyone working from home or everyone working in an office, but that we should afford both sets of people the ability to do either or.

okay so not for preacher but for other people the documentary the finnish cave divers made, Diving into the Unknown, of when they came back to get their friends is on netflix
(they rightly assumed the police would not give them permission, so they didn't ask, and they filmed everything in part to give to the inevitable investigation)
