Could he have saved a hundred? A thousand? Ten? We'll never know for sure without a way to visit alternate timelines. Trump officials interfered with CDC reports on Covid-19
The health department’s politically appointed communications aides have demanded the right to review and seek changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly scientific reports charting the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, in what officials characterized as an attempt to intimidate the reports’ authors and water down their communications to health professionals.

In some cases, emails from communications aides to CDC Director Robert Redfield and other senior officials openly complained that the agency’s reports would undermine President Donald Trump's optimistic messages about the outbreak, according to emails reviewed by POLITICO and three people familiar with the situation.

CDC officials have fought back against the most sweeping changes, but have increasingly agreed to allow the political officials to review the reports and, in a few cases, compromised on the wording, according to three people familiar with the exchanges. The communications aides’ efforts to change the language in the CDC’s reports have been constant across the summer and continued as recently as Friday afternoon.
The CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports are authored by career scientists and serve as the main vehicle for the agency to inform doctors, researchers and the general public about how Covid-19 is spreading and who is at risk. Such reports have historically been published with little fanfare and no political interference, said several longtime health department officials, and have been viewed as a cornerstone of the nation's public health work for decades.

But since Michael Caputo, a former Trump campaign official with no medical or scientific background, was installed in April as the health department's new spokesperson, there have been substantial efforts to align the reports with Trump's statements, including the president's claims that fears about the outbreak are overstated, or stop the reports altogether.

So we all knew this, but the CDC is pretty much compromised at this point.
In one clash, an aide to Caputo berated CDC scientists for attempting to use the reports to "hurt the President" in an Aug. 8 email sent to CDC Director Robert Redfield and other officials that was widely circulated inside the department and obtained by POLITICO.

"CDC to me appears to be writing hit pieces on the administration," appointee Paul Alexander wrote, calling on Redfield to modify two already published reports that Alexander claimed wrongly inflated the risks of coronavirus to children and undermined Trump's push to reopen schools. "CDC tried to report as if once kids get together, there will be spread and this will impact school re-opening . . . Very misleading by CDC and shame on them. Their aim is clear."

    I mean Jesus fucking Christ...
The efforts to modify the CDC reports began in earnest after a May report authored by senior CDC official Anne Schuchat, which reviewed the spread of Covid-19 in the United States and caused significant strife within the health department. HHS officials, including Secretary Alex Azar, believed that Schuchat was implying that the Trump administration moved too slowly to respond to the outbreak, said two individuals familiar with the situation.

The HHS criticism was mystifying to CDC officials, who believed that Schuchat was merely recounting the state of affairs and not rendering judgment on the response, the individuals familiar with the situation said. Schuchat has made few public appearances since authoring the report.
    Was it, really?
Caputo's team also has tried to halt the release of some CDC reports, including delaying a report that addressed how doctors were prescribing hydroxychloroquine, the malaria drug favored by Trump as a coronavirus treatment despite scant evidence. The report, which was held for about a month after Caputo’s team raised questions about its authors’ political leanings, was finally published last week. It said that "the potential benefits of these drugs do not outweigh their risks."

*looks at school reopenings impacted by kids getting covid once they get together*
If the CDC was trying to report that, they were right?

Just to be clear, not just the US.

And not just the places where the US is engaged in active conflict (Middle East), non-military conflict (Asia) or an absence of leadership has let bad shit happen (Russia and it's surrounding states).

But back to the topic of this thread. Locally, we're seeing a significant number of protests (14 arrests, 51 fined, today) over lockdown restrictions.

While that'd probably still happen to some lesser degree, I have no doubt that it's significantly increased as a result of US originating talking points. Covid spreads fast. Covid Trutherism spreads faster.

Seems we have in Germany another case of a superspreader from the US "Army"
A vacationer was probably a so-called "superspreader" in the nightlife of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and infected numerous other people with Covid-19. According to BR information, the woman from America had celebrated the night despite corona symptoms. In the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the number of new infections has risen to 54, exceeding the critical number of 50. Restrictions have been imposed and health department employees are trying to track down more infected and sick people. Presumably, more people are still infected - especially partygoers between 18 and 35 years of age could be affected.

Infected people celebrated in several restaurants
The corona detection team is working flat out to trace chains of infection. However, as District Administrator Anton Speer told the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation, this is proving extremely difficult. The highly infectious 26-year-old American woman was on the road in several locations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She and other infected persons had been in contact with numerous other people several times during the past weekend and last Tuesday, presumably in a cocktail bar on Marienplatz and in an Irish pub on Rathausplatz.

According to the District Office, the woman entered Germany "at the beginning of September or the end of August". Whether she brought the virus with her from the USA and possibly disregarded quarantine rules is still unclear. According to the report, 23 people have tested positive so far in an accommodation on the premises of US forces alone, where she had stayed overnight.

Trump is going to have let like a quarter of a million people die by the election and will still barely lose if he loses. The problem is that the electorate will only marginally punish them for these actions or reward anyone for going after them. It's very very likely that more then 45% of voters will look at Trump's actions and give him the thumbs up to do it again. That's what teaches you that you won't face consequences.

Dr. Collins left the White House after the announcement. But Dr. Marks, who had pushed for the plasma approval, was escorted to the Oval Office to spend a few minutes with Mr. Trump and his top aides, who were celebrating with cupcakes with white icing. In an interview on Friday, Dr. Marks said he was “a little bit in a state of shock” to find himself there being thanked by the president for his work on the plasma approval.

Although he described it as “a brief interaction that really didn’t have any substance,” health officials who had heard about the encounter said they feared it could create the impression that the guardrails between politics and science were being further eroded at a time when the public is already concerned about political pressure in assessing the safety of vaccines and treatments.
At the Food and Drug Administration, officials were expecting to finish the new analysis for the N.I.H. and to announce emergency approval of plasma as early as Monday, Aug. 24.

But on the preceding Thursday, they were told that was too late: The decision had to be announced on Sunday, the day before the start of the Republican National Convention, ostensibly because making the announcement during the gathering would appear to be politically driven.
How was announcing it literally the day before the RNC supposed to make it look less politically driven.

Probably because they're REALLY bad at this shit. It's amazing how little understanding of optics they have (like Kushner thinking the Comey firing would be a public relations win for them).

The only reason it works is because most of their believers don't need any justification, but a few on the fringes are placated by the most implausible deniabilities.

Now, some can argue it works because they're still in power with a grip on their voter base. My point is if they weren't half as fucking dumb as they are, Trump would probably be a lock for re-elect, rather than the current fluid situation.

So my wife gave her mom a call yesterday to say hi and found out that on Tuesday night her 80+ year old grandma had been sick with GI issues and fever / chills / body aches. She felt better on Wednesday so she didn't call her doctor or get tested for COVID because she assumed since it was relatively mild that she had food poisoning from some chicken soup she made.

I'm quite ticked we only found out about this yesterday - we had visited grandmas the previous Saturday so if she had COVID we would have been exposed. Then this past Saturday we had my parents and sister / nephew over for my mom's birthday so if we contracted it we could have exposed them too.

In both cases we were outside and avoided contact / stayed distanced, but it's still maddening that my mother in law / grandmother in law are being so casual about this and not bothering to get tested or inform people she might have exposed. I let my family know right away and none of us are symptomatic so it's probably fine, but just so annoying and irresponsible that they aren't taking this seriously.

One of our employees is currently quarantined at home because his wife tested positive last week. So I was tasked with getting him our WFH package, which, okay, fine, I leave this stuff at your door, you come get it after I get back in the car.

He meets me in the driveway. Not wearing a mask, so he pulls his shirt and coat over his nose and mouth and approaches me to hand-receive the gear. Didn't even know he was doing it until I looked up after pulling all the gear out of the back seat, and by then he was already 1 foot away.

Called the COO later, gave them a piece of my mind about this shit. I find out a few things:

    1. His wife is already back at work this week. Mind you she tested positive 5 days ago
    2. Not requiring our employee to get tested, and he'll be back at work next week, which is definitely not 14 days
    3. They're looking to still bring me back to the office in a few weeks, even though we're still getting positive cases and zero measures have been taken at the office (No mask mandate, much less a recommendation, for employees nor customers)

If we weren't dependent upon my income right now I'd fucking skip town and build houses or some shit, this is fucking stupid. There's being a science denier and then there's just general fucking incompetence everywhere.

Michael Caputo, the assistant secretary of health for public affairs, told a Facebook audience without evidence that left-wing hit squads were being trained for insurrection, and he accused C.D.C. scientists of “sedition.”
Mr. Caputo echoed those sentiments, saying scientists “deep in the bowels of the C.D.C. have given up science and become political animals.”

They “haven’t gotten out of their sweatpants except for meetings at coffee shops” to plot “how they’re going to attack Donald Trump next,” Mr. Caputo said. “There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to get well, not until after Joe Biden is president.”
He accused officials at the C.D.C. and other government agencies — including the Department of Health and Human Services — of deliberately subverting the president’s efforts to contain the pandemic. The C.D.C., he said, was riddled with anti-Trump researchers who “walk around like they are monks” and “holy men” but engage in “rotten science.”

But he singled out Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the agency, for praise. He “is one of my closest friends in Washington,” he said. “He’s such a good man.”

Former and current agency officials have asserted that Dr. Redfield has allowed so much political interference with the agency’s work that some career scientists are on the verge of resigning.
Mr. Caputo’s scientific adviser, Dr. Paul Alexander, was heavily involved in the effort to reshape the C.D.C.’s weekly reports on morbidity and mortality. The reports are widely read by the nation’s health professionals, who depend upon them for medical guidance.

Mr. Caputo acknowledged in a brief interview this weekend that it was unusual for a public affairs officer to hire his own scientific adviser. But he described Dr. Alexander, an assistant professor at McMaster University in Canada, as “a genius” to his Facebook audience, saying the public criticism had only served to make his position “permanent” as a watchdog over politically motivated scientists.

“To allow people to die so that you can replace the president is a grievous venial sin, venial sin,” he said. “And these people are all going to hell.”
Well, that is batshit projection by people who are harming coronavirus response efforts.

    FUCK!

The one day I didn't have my phone near me.

That one case at the nursing home has expanded to 5. Mom is going to take dad out of the nursing home tomorrow. He was in proximity to one person who has tested positive. Early tests of him are negative.

So now we get to play the 2 week waiting game...

I mean, it's still a serious topic, but it can't be all anger and frustration, ya know?

EDIT: it's worth it to watch till the end.

Can I admit I don't know who the other person at the end was?

sean evans from the youtube series hot ones, where he interviews celebrities while they're eating increasingly hot sauces.

Rudd was on it and someone made a meme of it, because Paul Rudd.

spoiling the video because it's off topic.
I have no idea why I can't find the actual Paul Rudd interview; like it's been taken off the channel for some reason?

    Anyway, the meme.

EDIT: Apparently hot ones is now a TV game show in some way? So some of the youtube episodes are pulled if they're airing on the gameshow temporarily? I can't even begin to imagine what level if idiocy is involved in making a TV show and how something like this makes sense to anybody.

The show was recorded pre-covid. Theyve been mailing sauces and doing zoom interviews for hot ones proper. It has been a delightful mess.

A bit more information this morning.

Mom's heading over to pull him out now. They are going to get him home, have him shower, and sanitize their clothes.

Mom's decided she isn't going to go into work for the next couple weeks, as a precaution. Further, she's asked me to not come over and visit so there's no chance of me getting infected, so I can run errands and the like.

    So... yeah. Damnit.

We don’t deserve Paul Rudd. And yes, thank you for posting some levity.

Here’s the followup video he did explaining why he made this:

Showering and clothes sanitizing is fine, but not really important. Your Dad is the potential vector, not his pants.

I don't know your specific risk factors, but, if there are negative tests taken for your dad I would be more likely to advise that you pick up your dad and have him stay with you for 7 days (remembering that your dad has a negative test result) and then don't go to work than your Mum doing it. Young people are vastly less at risk from a generic standpoint.

Also, don't assume you can't get a test. Call your dads doctor and see if they will schedule another test for like, tomorrow. My experience has been that the allocation of testing is hard not because there are no tests, but because some places have many tests and others have none. Maybe you'll. get lucky there.
