God this latest chapter of My Hero Academia vigilantes got me excited

    Kochi a speedy boy now

That side series has gotten really good, I just wish the lead two didn't have that age gap and all.

I thought Gargantia was OK but lacked a certain something to push it to greatness. But then I'm a picky bastard

Ended up enjoying Deca Dence a fair bit more, for some reason those two shows feel very similar in my mind

Rewatching 'Black Lagoon' on Hulu, because I needed some anime junk food.

And for my money, the first season's 'Roberta' arc is the absolute height of junk food action anime.

Man, the Netflix dub cannot decide how they want to pronounce NERV and Seele. Seems like every character has a different way of saying them.

Why was this on my recommended (don't open hexmage)

Marty: The future, it's where you're going?
Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

    Evangelion 23 Thoughts
Seeing Asuka go from an arrogant brat to completely despondent and self-hating hits pretty hard.

The Angel making Rei and Shinji get all veiny was bad enough. Having tiny heads sprouting from the back of Shinji's hand and wrist and pressing against his suit was grotesque.

The degradation of Misato and Ritsuko's relationship over the series has been interesting to see.

    Evangelion 24 Thoughts
So everyone finally left Tokyo-3? I was wondering why anybody would stay in a city that was constantly under attack by horrifying giant monsters.

Whoa, surprise expedition dump. So, Lilith begat the human race, and Adam begat the Angels? And there's something about a black moon and a white moon?

Wasn't expecting Kaworu to reveal himself to be an Angel so soon. I thought they'd give him at least one episode to keep up the facade. Maybe he gets more screentime in the movies?

    Oh, wow, here we go.

I wonder what the initial reaction to this episode when it first aired was???

    Evangelion 26
So now it's a montage of photos while manifestations of the various characters reflect Shinji's own psyche. I wonder if there's any greater meaning to the photos chosen?

Eva's last 2 episodes largely were created how they were due to budget reasons from what I heard. And then they were given a billion dollars to make the movie.

Absolutely! Those last 2 episodes are a huge huge part of why it was such a cultural anime touchstone! Sometimes restrictions create some rad results.

One of the dynamics that stands out with the TV show I think is how often the kids are able to almost just be normal kids. They all have their severe issues, but they're not just their issues all the time. Shinji's not always crying about his dad and not wanting to go in the giant robot, Rei's not always comatose, Asuka's not always wildly self-aggrandizing and/or going crazy. Unlike in the movies where like Rei is a robot, Asuka is a basket case, and Shinji is nothing but self-hatred. Misato, too, her personal life is kinda a mess but it's like a realistic mess, she's not just a high-functioning alcoholic.

It feels like the more fucked up versions are mostly what they're remembered as unfortunately, just a bunch of meme-able trainwrecks bordering on misery porn.

I don’t have Netflix to know if their version of the Eva series is the platinum edition that included stuff from death and rebirth (death true is some sort of director’s cut?) Anyways it adds some minor stuff and then does a section of End of Eva?

Long story short just skip it and watch End of Evangelion.

I think the movie is a worse ending than the tv series, but it's definitely worth watching.

I mean if nothing else the giant mech battle is amazing

This week on AniMenagerie we had a pretty by-the-numbers time with Gurren Lagann. Ya know? Simon had to fight Rez and Xenogears made a "tough choice."

But we need to talk about the actual meat of this week, which was all in Princess Nine.

Y'all like drama? Let me introduce the core conflict of tonight's three episodes:

    Princess-Nine-Friendzone.jpg

Which lead to @darunia106, @IronKnuckle's Ghost, and I writing the final episode for the evening.

    Princess-Nine-I-Hate-You-Takasugi.jpg

Also, we found out that a member of the baseball team unofficially but definitely was visited by BoogiePop, the personification of Death.

I'm trying to remember the name of an anime, maybe someone here can help me out. It's almost certainly pre-2000, most likely 80s-90s from what I remember of the art.

All I remember is that the main character was a girl, maybe a princess, and she could summon a giant monster of some sort. That I think she rode around on.

The important part is that it has a really awesome theme song, that I was pretty sure was a duet featuring Ichirou Mizuki (and I thought Mitsuko Horie, but maybe not). And the song basically just explains the plot (a girl summoning a big monster).

The only thing with the TV ending is that
nothing really happens with Seele and the other Evas are only mentioned and never seen. Plus we don't really know what's happening in the physical world to everyone.

I think the show had more than enough of
    Asuka suffering
, the film didn't need to triple down on it.

100% yes. End of Eva is an important part of what makes the series live on memorably and I don't really respect any viewpoint to the contrary. Komm, süsser Tod alone... In general, the sentiment "don't watch ___" stinks. "I think this part was really bad for reasons x,y, and z" is totally reasonable, but "make sure you don't form your own opinion" is... terrible? MIB International was awful, but if someone is curious enough, they should watch it. People doing so are the only reason we have the consensus that it was terrible and why.

Another pretty poor Wonder Egg episode. Really can't see it sticking the landing at this point. Also, a pretty graphic and gratuitous scene this week, so... yeah. Yuck.
The main characters confront the Accas and then just fucking drop it because they got a text about a boy. But also, Neiru knew they were super evil all along, because... uh, right. Momoe's dumped because the guy who asked her out is actually gay, and thought she was a boy, while her egg of the week is a transgender boy who was raped and got pregnant, which they decided to show for some fucking reason. But then beating that monster 'wins' Momoe's game, so her dead friend just up and disappears, which summons a knockoff Pyramid Head girl who kills her magical pet and forces her to eat it, putting "the fear of death" into her, and only people who don't fear death can fight? Apparently a thing none of them had before? And Pyramid Head is the harbinger of death incarnate Thanos Thanatos or something? What? This is just a mess.

Rimuru's spell choice is ruthless and elegant? For a spell named "Megiddo", it's not actually destroying much of anything... it's not making any real noise... and... it's a complete and systematic slaughter. Going to admit I was expecting him to just lay waste with fire and lightning.

Jujutsu Kaisen has been fun. I greatly enjoy anime where the fight scenes are just people beating the shit out of each other.

But it feels like one of those shows that is gonna take a while to update so I'm not gonna get too attached.

it's such a good reflection of his character, 1. it's literally just the first Extra Skill he earned Water Manipulation, making mirrors and lenses to reflect and refract sunlight which are low level enough to not be noticed or canceled out, as well as the attack itself just being physics in nature. it's a pretty good metaphor for his style which is just being competent and efficient in attaining goals being assisted by the Great Sage. finally, it's terrifying like having 1000 snipers just appear in an enemy encampment, while being oddly merciful.

the sound design does so much for the show, i love how punchy and weighty all the attacks are, highlights being Geld just stomping a mudhole into arrogant dick #1 and Hakurou with the cold truth to the still conscious head of arrogant isekai dick #2

Gabiru got the best one-liner though, making his running gag into a pretty sick quip.

sleepy king santa gonna have a rude awakening when he finds his army been fireworks factory'd.
