"We don't negotiate on the debt ceiling" has so far been the White House and the Democratic party official position afaik.
The problem is there's a few folks like fucking Manchin who are negotiate with terrorists curious.
It's been talked about before, a little bit, but can Biden just order the Treasury to keep paying the bills, regardless of what Congress wants to do? I'm sort of expecting him to do that, and dare the GOP to sue him for it.
The debt limit is a stupid artificial thing anyway.
He can. But the problem is the idea that the US might have defaulted if he hadn't is enough to erode the perceived rock-solid nature of the US dollar. And the danger looms that some day some crazy fucking Republican won't keep it up. Or some crazy fucking Republican Court will stop it.
If the ceiling isn't raised and it goes to Court we already nuked the global economy. Even if everyone agrees that we will still keep paying out in money that continues to be worth 100¢ on the $1 it would still constitute a technical default and risk premium that just never existed.
Yeah, the more Republicans dick about, the more damage they do. Because fiat currency works on faith. Shake that faith, you destabilise the currency.
Bet way more of the whackadoodles in Congress think going back to a metal standard is the way forward, not understanding how severely limiting to the economy that concept is.
Because they're all Dunning-Kruger posterchildren.

Not denying that the case where the ceiling isn't raised and goes to Court won't be bad and have major long-term consequences.
I just think that if it does come to pass, because of the amount of money everyone stands to lose most everyone will collectively try not to look down and keep carrying on and pretending the alternative isn't happening.
Of course everyone panicking and trying to get out before they are left holding the bag causing the feared collapse is certainly a possibility too. Interesting times!

Given that's what caused the shit with SVB, it'll absolutely happen again.
Republicans are incapable of handling collective action problems.
They, or their overlords, are going to get twitchy and try to get ahead of things, and wham, it all falls apart as people get scared.
I mean, it's the basis of nearly every market crash. Everyone keeps a level head, everyone absorbs a little pain. But someone tries to get ahead of that pain, and that's when shit goes tits up.

The idea that we should "go back to the gold standard" is an astonishingly commonly-held idea on the right. I'd imagine a decent number of R's in Congress think it's a decent option even if they aren't actively all about it. And it's wild. Gold is a publicly traded commodity now. Even aside from any limitations on the economy, the fact that its value is tied to the emotions of finance bros is reason enough to realize that would be a terrible idea.
Republicans don’t have Sinister Overlords making sure they don’t go too far. They answer to the voters, and their voters are nuts.
Not all of them. Not the high profile ones, like Gaetz, Gosar, etc.
But there's 100+ Republicans who never make the news, who most people (including a decent percentage of their own electorate who just look for the (R) after their name) who are bought and paid for by very specific interests who fund pretty much their entire campaign.
Not every Republican is crazy. I think it's a mistake to think so. There's a bunch who are just greedy craven opportunists, afraid of the base, and their other legislators, but not true believers.

They absolutely do have sinister overlords, and they are absolutely in the pocket of said sinister overlords. However, they've been pretending to be insane for so long, that madness has consumed many of them and they were never very smart.
Like, even Tucker Carlson hates Trump, hates all the new Republican nonsense. We have the receipts. They are doing it for money, because they want to be rich. But, some of those sinister overlords have also gone mad, believing they are good simply because they are rich, and that their wealth was ordained by God, and some of them are also stupid.
Only a very small fraction of people on the republican side actually care what their voters want. Most are there for the money. A smaller fraction just doesn't know how to play any other role and the smallest fraction of all actually cares about what they imagine their voters want.

Tucker Carlson is the heir to the Swanson fortune. He was rich before he got on TV.

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws

Don't think so, but that's not exactly a complete solution. Using the trillion dollar coin means that Congress (the Republicans) pulled the trigger and shot the hostage. Sure the $1T coin with whoever's face on it manages to avoid most of the... immediately tangible dead hostage related issues, but the rest of the world will have seen that the Republicans actually did pull that trigger and the fallout will be nasty.
Shut up, Mr. Burton! You were not brought upon this world to get it!

If it happens, and it's not Harriett Tubman, I'll be very disappointed.
After the bitching about replacing Jackson, fuck the critics.
I will accept Rosa Parks as a reasonable compromise, but Tubman is the better choice.
Yeah, if Biden is going to use the 14th to nuke the debt ceiling, he is probably going to have to do that before the fucking economic terrorists, known as the republicans, can claim that we are no longer able to pay bills. I do think we might see that shit get shot down here soon though because that shit is causing a fuck ton of problems, it's illegal because the 14th is explicit that the US's debts will not be questioned, nor go unpaid. Probably enough people in the courts or that have undue sway over them, that will not pleased with destroying their fortunes to appease of bunch of ignorant, shitty fascists.
I don't see it being wise to give these fuckers anything to raise the debt ceiling because regardless of how things go over the debt ceiling. The fuckers are going to pull this shit again during the budget and giving them any sort of win now, is going to embolden them further during the budget fight. Break them limbs now, so that they are less likely to push as hard during the budget. Likely will have to settle for a continuing resolution for the next two years, unless the GOP loses their house majority somehow.
