Thinking more about that Hbomberguy Talarico video.. dude might have been able to keep going with his bullshit if it hadn't tried to get a cut of that Roblox money. It's honestly impressive how that one greedy action basically lead to the larger than life reputation he's obviously so desperate to cultivate just getting blown the hell up.
Technology is cool, actually. That said, this really does seem like a convenience option - but standardizing the battery platform is a good idea in general because they are technically consumables.
I don't think "consumable" is really the right way to think about EV batteries. The time span on when they wear down is as long as any of the other mechanical parts.
I don't think battery swaps is going to be the future, the install and especially maintenance costs on those stations must be astronomical.
And, ultimately, the problem they're solving isn't actually the range problem, it's the range anxiety problem. Like once the market gets to the place where every car has 2-300 mile range and consumers are used to the realities of EV ownership (i.e., the times you need to fast charge are few and far between), who will want to pay a premium too swap batteries in 5 mins when you can just charge in 20?
My prediction has been for a while that we'd only get widespread battery swapping if we had some new chemistry where we got increased density but limited battery use, and then those are used as auxiliary batteries. (And then they can be smaller/lighter and not need a giant robot swapping machine but just like, a dude with a loading dolly or whatever.)
And honestly, the charging situation isn't that bad - when the infrastructure exists. I just did a decent EV road trip a couple months back (Vegas to LA and back), and since that's a well defined and supported route, the trip went well and we never had an overly long charge time at any of the DC fast chargers. That said...right now the reality is that the infrastructure really only exists for NACS, as Robert Dunn of Aging Wheels pointed out in a recent video:
I install Adblock Plus on my clients' computers because it still blocks some and it tends to not interfere with things like banking sites. The last thing I want to do is have a return call because someone can't get into some random site.

To be clear I use AdblockPlus on Chrome because I only use Chrome for things I want to work. Firefox is running Umatrix, Decentraleyes, NoScript and HTTPS Everywhere. Every new website is an adventure in figuring out how broken something can still be while doing what I need it to do.
FWIW I run into a lot more sites broken by firefox's tracking protection settings than ublock origin's default functionality. I've hardly ever run into anything that ublock breaks. It's VERY good, though probably not as comprehensive as noscript and etc.

An annoying thing that noScript occasionally reveals is the number of sites that are completely non -functional without JavaScript.

I wasn't familiar with Talarico outside the Intellivision kerfuffles but boy is he a textbook example of how loud, pathological liars can get away with saying whatever they want and hogging most of the credit while they're at it.

Ok, this just fricked happened again when I was trying to find the hours of a local retailer this morning, but I didn't trust the times that Google was giving me. I mean, CMON, you can't put your hours on your website in just plain HTML?? It's not that hard!

In the smallest of defense, that kind of thing might be set up to feed from, say, the Facebook API or from their payroll system so that it automatically updates.

I just got recommended this video by a creator that I've never heard of before. It is, by far, the most subscribed to and most viewed video I've been presented in a LONG while that didn't come from this forum.
Sophia 'Sophie from Mars' McAllister Is A Danger to Other Trans Women.
We are a group of trans women who have been harmed by Sophie. Some of us have dated and been in relationships with her, many others have hooked up with her. She has been abusive, controlling, indifferent to our consent or its absence, and catastrophically selfish. Some of us have been permanently physically scarred. Some of us have had drugs pressured on us. All of us have been left seriously hurt, both emotionally and physically. We believe this represents a pattern Of calculated, intentional abuse by Sophie, and that there may be many more people she has harmed. We are publicising this because the whisper network was not enough to protect us. If Sophie had a reputation for being unsafe we either did not hear about it or gave her the benefit of the doubt.
We believe that for the safety of the community she must be linked to concrete, tangible harms. As trans women, we neither trust nor want the authorities to be involved in this case. An institutionally transphobic system of criminal justice has no business here. We would not wish it on our worst enemy, and it would make all of us less safe. We ask that everyone respect our wishes on this. Whatever follows this and however Sophie chooses to respond, any process of accountability and who participates in it is an individual decision rather than a collective one. The one other thing we can confidently say we all share in feeling is that Sophie's actions must be known about so they can never happen again.

Sophie's apology is either incredibly passive or implying her borderline personality disorder caused her to consistently dissociate with reality hard enough she was unaware she was physically abusive to the point of cigarette burning multiple partners.

Fun fact: this is the subject of one of my all-time favorite newsposts, and a few phrases that live rent-free in my head.

idk it just seems extremely stupid tech bullshit, which i guess in hindsight is extremely on brand so nevermind.

But for myself it's uBlock Origin all day.

There have been pushes for "pay at the pump" regulations, but as you can expect, the people who own the networks like having captive audiences.
