The oxygen destroyer is such a weird pull. The entire name of the weapon and its use happens in less then 5 minutes and its indistinguishable from any other big explosion. It's like they just needed to wound the big guy and felt a nuke just wasn't good enough. There's no buildup, it had no meaning unless you love the original movie and destroyah

2 and a half minutes total.
Also right when the big guy had ghidorah where he wanted him! He was dominating that match until the humans interfered!

King of the Monsters was a fantastic entry in 'big dumb monsters fighting ', but the trailer (and the preceding movie to an extent) definitely sets it up to be something different. Killing off the characters from the last movie while adding a whole new slew of background guys who don't come back doesn't really help it either
E: Also the release dates moving around means I won't be able to see gxk till probably next weekend and I'm upset about it.
KotM doesn't know whether or not it wants to be G2014 or a summer blockbuster. Unfortunately it misses on both marks.

As the person who still considers it the best(prior to seeing GxK anyway), I thought it had the best of both worlds. Great kaiju fighting and an actual sympathetic story with likeable characters(MBB, Charles Dance!, etc).
Man likeable? They were all the most unlikeable weirdos. Who was I meant to root for in that interminable mess? Every character in kotm felt like they were from a different movie than each other. It felt like watching aliens with human masks on. It was easily the most atrocious of the lot for me as someone who’s not big in kaiju stuff for its own sake, it felt like I couldn’t even just ignore the silly characters, the movie expected me to care about a bunch of self serious assholes who honestly couldn’t feel less relatable.
Saw this most recent one. I’m not going to yuck anyones yums with it, if you liked the last one you’ll probably like this as it’s basically the same. But I just think I made a mistake in seeing it, was just not my thing at all
I don’t know whether it was my cinema, it’s usually good quality, but it also looked really blurry, especially in shots where people were in the foreground and like a kaiju was in the background, it genuinely looked terrible, and I don’t usually care about cg quality that much. I think maybe it was intentional? Like a homage to the split screen effects of the older films where you had live action people in the foreground and the suits in the background? Whatever it was it looked obvious and strange
It would make a fun video game but it’s my own fault for not recognising by now that this series isn’t really for me

I really enjoy that they aren't trying to keep a "this is the monsterversw house style"
We get monarch and this existing in the same universe and it is buck wild
Was it my cinema or was it really blurry in some of the cgi for anyone else? Particularly shots of kaiju and like people in the same shot

I noticed some blurryness but we were seeing it at this new type of 270 degree panoramic cinema where you need to look at the center of the screen and figured it was due to that.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: No monkey business here. Legendary and Warner Bros‘ $135M production Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is blowing away projections with a $31M Friday (including last night’s Monsterverse-record $10M previews) and a 3-day of $67M at 3,861 venues. That’s the second-best stateside start ever for a Legendary Monsterverse film, ranking behind Godzilla’s $93.1M in 2014 and ahead of 2017’s Kong: Skull Island ($61M).

Hoping to see this movie soon.
Also, I had a very long conversation with the kids at work about Godzilla and related media.
One kid who is in first grade not only knew about Shin Godzilla and what it looked like, but he said his favorite Kaiju was Rodan.
Motherfucking Rodan.

In trying to figure out why I like this movie so much but don't like KotM very much, I think it comes down to the fact that GvK immediately lets you know this is going to be a goofy movie with that ridiculous soundtrack that plays over Kong doing this Kong thing.
And this is a deeply goofy movie. Even ignoring the Hollow Earth zaniness (Going from "We think there may be some parts of the earth that have tunnels" to "Yeah, the core of the earth is another world" is a pretty big leap) this is a deeply dumb movie in all the best ways. It revels in its silliness and it doesn't let realism get in the way of fun at all. The bit where
Godzilla burns a hole all the way to the Hollow Earth and then he and Kong start yelling at each other through it is profoundly stupid in a way I very much appreciate. Two kaiju duking it out on an aircraft carrier is exactly my jam. Also I enjoy the ridiculous monkey moves they give Kong, jumping from boat to boat like this was Evengelion. And the descent into Hollow Earth is really cool!
Human cast is inoffensive, though what a waste of a Serisawa.
Best part of the movie is the Hollow Earth. Even the brief bit we see, I don't think the Monsterverse has felt like this since Skull Island. I wish we could have spent more time with it in this film but thankfully I'm going to see the sequel here in a couple hours.
I don't like the Mechagodzilla design, but it's not a deal breaker. He just looks weirdly proportioned and skinny compared to dummy thicc Godzilla.
Also just rewatched Final Wars and man, I really love that stupid-ass film.

I didn't hate it or anything, I don't regret my ticket purchase or the all to expensive food and drink I had with it.
But it didn't excite me, maybe there's only so many times I can see big animals do goofy things before the magic wears off, maybe it was the fact that the main villain was kinda meh in my opinion, or maybe it was the fact that I had already seen most of the best moments in the trailers.

This is the first Monsterverse movie that actually feels like a sequel, tonally, probably due to keeping the same director. If you liked Godzilla x Kong this is.. more of that really. There is no deep message here, they aren't making high art, this is a down and dirty monster mash and fun is the #1 rule here.
I greatly appreciated the long stretches of this movie where there are literally no human characters; just Kong and whatever emoting they can get out of the CG model. Doesn't break free from the Kaiju paradox, but this might be the most loaded I've seen a Kaiju flick in a good long while.
Also MEGA HONKING spoilers that wasn't even in the trailers, open at your own peril.
Whatever marketing guy decided to keep Mothra under wraps for this movie deserves a medal. That was a pleasant surprise to get a team-up of Kong, Godzilla, Mothra and Mini-Kong (did they ever give that guy a name?).

Kong's emoting was pretty good, it always felt like I had a good grasp on what he was thinking and feeling.
Godzilla was pretty easy to understand.
"Abaolutely not."

Also my favorite moment was probably
Kong putting up the "NO WAIT, STOP!" Hands while Godzilla was barreling towards him.

Something I found funny
That goofy shot of Kong and Godzilla running from the trailer every reactor was like ‘they’re totally running away from the new big bad’ and nope. Heading right for it like a couple of bosses.

Seriously? That trailer shot couldn't have been more of a "charge into battle" shot unless they gave Kong a giant battle flag.[/spiler]

Some more excerpts from my conversation with children about Godzilla
"Is Godzilla a good guy or a bad guy."
Neither.
"But why does he fight Kong if he's a good guy?"
He's not a good guy or a bad guy, he's a force of nature.
"What?"
Can you argue with a hurricane?
"I don't understand."
Ok, you know tornados? How they can destroy homes?
"Yeah."
Can you talk with the tornado and ask it to not destroy yours?

I mean, I am purposefully excluded the multiple movies where Godzilla talks to the other monsters and the tiny clamshell women translate. I was talking to them about what Godzilla represents.
Like, when i said "he's a metaphor for the atomic bomb" the two questions I got were "whats a metaphor" and "whats an atomic bomb" to give you an idea how young we're talking about.

to be fair, there's a lot of adults who would have the same questions
Thinking about where the franchise goes from here.
We're in a similar spot to the last movie, except Kong has a people now. He basically has an army.
And what good is an army without something to fight?
Perhaps it's time for the Xillions to show up looking for their pet. Have them bring Gigan along, leading an army of monsters.
It makes sense that in a universe where Kaiju are real, that they'd be used as superweapons. Drop 100 titans on a planet and let 'em wipe out the native populations and any naturally occuring titans.
