The amount of players in game the last month has really been wonderful for my play experience. The interaction between Vets and Newbies is a cornerstone to the feel of the CoX community for me
I'm a little sad how many people say that you couldn't do customization on a CoH scale with modern expectations of art fidelity, but honestly I believe it. Even some of my favorite costumes just clip into themselves and I've just learned not to mind.

Is also a full comment on the state of the MMO genre and the gaming industry from TheOcho:
“City of Heroes came about in a time where MMOs were still able to be developed with reasonable budgets and with that came about a lot more creative freedom and far less economic pressures to have mass market success. This led to far more interesting ideas and unique ways to play, something which is definitely missing these days. I’ve worked on more than 30 MMOs at this point, and the vast majority of them were functionally the same game. Different themes and powers, different systems, but all basically the same.
The economic reality is that CoH couldn’t be made today. Game development has become exponentially more expensive, and the profit margins have shrunk tremendously. Games either have to be massive AAA blockbusters or small indie affairs. CoH is both too big a game to be developed by a small indie team, and too niche a game to reach the size of audience that supporting the team would require. It’s an unfortunate state of being; my hope is that advancements in tools continues to be able to make something like CoH possible again someday.”
There's a constant saying on MMO discussions that if X game died, something else, more modern, could actually take it's place. This is point blank stating that those argument are delusional cope, on the current state of the gaming industry, if it wasn't for the old dinosaurs still getting content, this genre would be as dead as RTS.

My 50 dollar City of Titans kickstarter pledge is gonna pay off any day now!
(God bless 'em though, I needed the solidarity that project gave me with the post shutdown grief)

It might allow something else worse to not get choked out, though. Very little stands a chance against the content and polish the old dinosaurs have.

Yes, but the people wanting Old MMO 2 always imagine/assume it would be a perfected version of the original, which updates the graphics, engine etc to the current standard and fixes all the bugs and "mistakes" without introducing any new ones. To which I say, L O L.

How many companies have made a second successful MMO even?

About as many as there have been revolutions that resulted in states that were better in every way, and for similar reasons.
Turns out that "burn everything down and start over", while appealing to think about, is not actually a great plan.
EDIT: a friend offers FFXIV, A Realm Reborn. again, the sort of exception that people cling to and assert "see, it couldwould happen!"

Oddly, New World is going that route right now. They're going to take down the current game and re-release it with a new name and it'll be a co-op ARPG.

Full details behind the link, but the marquee features from left to right are:
A new high-level trial zone that's a twisting labyrinth dungeon, with a minotaur boss that's intended to be fought as a league, with people gathering level shifts off of giant skulls in remote corners to take him on when he hunts them down. Being in the zone gives you a short-cooldown teleport so you can hop over to help a leaguemate in trouble wherever you are.
A new support set, Marine Affinity, with a real grab-bag of buffs and debuffs and a little actual damage from crashing waves into people if you're feeling saucy. Mercs/marine masterminds will soon be boasting about their 10,000 confirmed kills.
Approximately 5 hojillion weapon sets have been added to the game since launch, and they're finally giving the Warriors a few more of them.
I wonder if Marine Affinity will be good, it's a really neat set from what I can see, it's like almost entirely ground-AoE and PBAoE, been hearing good things about it on MM
Also I didn't know we got a new story arc, that wasn't in the first beta version I don't think
Some cool accolade powers too, Mark & Recall sounds awesome (also glad there's a reason to kill Seed of Hamidon now lmao), and shoutouts to Blarf
This thread made me give the game a spin, for the first time since playing quite a bit when the re-launch happened.
I heard "MM buffs", I am sucker for MM buffs, and here I am.
Playing mega casually and solo basically. The population appears to be 90% on the heroes side now, so I'm basically the last man alive in the low level areas of CoV side on Everlast.
It's been fun from a "messing around solo" standpoint at least. The new zombie MM is great -- having the attacks summon wraiths is a great idea. It's now a great example of "good necromancer gameplay" and I'm impressed that the staff were able to make it feel so much better with that change (I wish Blizzard would take notes, as Necromancers in D4 are still absurdly boring and lame to play and it's one of my favorite archetypes).
And hey I heard you guys saying the new aquatic power set is OP with masterminds, so of course I slapped that on there too. It is indeed good!
No idea how long I'll stick around with it -- I have a Plant/Fire dominator that's like level 42 who I like too -- but hey it's been fun either way.
Nice! Yeah I'm not opposed to doing that sometime -- what server are you on? I rolled the new guy on Everlast since that's where all of my old characters were from where the PA guild was settled at the time.
Also restarting made me remember my pride and joy, this terrible pun water blaster I made named "Purple Ra-ain":

Good vibes all around
QA from the original developers!
Time capsules all over the place occasionally holding the original designs of various enemy groups!
The throwback vendor in Ouro now has even more stuff with time capsule tokens!

Yeah, I know what that's like.
Games-as-a-service are the new thing that's the forever game that MMOs were supposed to be, and honestly, they've got about the same success rate.

MassivelyOP reports that is the same game, but in console. Is just a complete mess because they are trying to remove the words "MMO" from their marketing for some reason.

I guess I should probably try with more people.
Arsenal Control is an incredibly strong AOE control set with a lot of variety, too.

I think most folks also go to Pocket D and change their alignment to either Vigilante or Rogue so they can go anywhere and play any missions.
