Hmmm... Supposed to be playing in a new campaign starting this Sunday. The DM asked us to put together a wish list of magic items for our characters to give him suggestions. I have no idea where to start with something like that. Any ideas for level 1-5 magic items for a stealthy rogue?
Ok, so I have been chatting around and I think I may have devised a system:
Poker Skill Challenge: Legal Usable Skills: Bluff, Insight, Perception, Diplomacy (And others if you can give a good enough reason)
Illegal Usable Skills: Thievery (for sleight of hand and cheating, obviously)
Pick 3 skills to use and roll vs the level of the table you are playing. Higher level tables offer more money, but are harder to beat.
3 failures - You lose everything you bet. Too bad.
2 failures, 1 success - You manage to walk away with half of what you had.
2 success, 1 failure - You collect half of what you bet in winnings. (Bet x 1.5)
3 successes - You double your money.
Cheating:
At any time you can use a thievery check to turn a failure into a success, however, if you fail this check you have been caught cheating. At the very least you would be thrown out of the establishment, at worst you get arrested or start a fight.
Overall, I think this is a pretty fair system. Any comments or complaints?

Ok, I tried posting this in critical failures and I got a lecture on the evils of gambling, so I figured I would try here instead.
How do you guys handle gambling in DnD? My current character has a bit of an addiction to poker, and the DM and I have yet to work out a fair skill challenge to represent it.
Any ideas?
profession gambling check
We had a character in our old Deadlands game who was addicted to some drug they made up, and over time withdrawal would give him a negative modifier on all rolls.
Since it was deadlands, the way we handled the actual fighting off of the addiction was by doing checks once per day, where we would pull out a deck of cards and deal two hands of nine cards, one for the DM and one for the player. Each had to make their best five card hand. If the DM won, the addiction level got worse by one. If the player won, the addiction level was reduced.
The chart for the addiction levels looked something like this:
-5 Basically Dead - (-5 modifier to all rolls)
-4 Trainspotting - (-4 mod)
-3 Bad off - (-3 mod)
-2 Hooked - (-2 mod)
-1 Social Drinker - (-1 mod)
0 Normal, slightly addicted
+1 I can quit whenever I want
+2 Cold Turkey
+3 12 Step Program
+4 A new man (the addiction is broken for good)
Basically, he started at 0 and every day the addiction had a chance of getting better or worse. If he got into positive numbers by winning hands, he was beating the addiction. If he got to +4, he beat the addiction and didn't have to play anymore hands. Most of the game, he wavered between + and - 2, and then eventually looked like he was getting close and then he overdosed on something he found and died.
The character, not the player.
EDIT: I know this isn't a gambling system, but I felt like sharing since it was related.

Not everything needs a mechanic reinforcing it. In most settings the amount of coin even a heroic level adventurer can throw around makes casual gambling pointless outside of just being a hobby.
If you're just gambling with random jackasses, there's no reason to make it into a skill challenge. The dwarf doesn't need to perform a skill challenge to get drunk or drink the bard under the table, and the rest of the party doesn't need to sit around while the dwarf makes endurance checks to try and drink even more.
If you're gambling for bigger stakes, ideally that would be treated like an encounter or several encounters, so the entire party can get involved and you can get as ridiculous as necessary.
Generally "roll d20 to randomly make or lose money" isn't an exciting mechanic for a game.
All you need to do for humans is pick a very standard sounding English name
William, John, James, Arthur, Harold, you get the idea
Then, for their last name, you have two options
Pick another standard sounding English name, attach the suffix -son
Or pick an olde timey profession, and use that
Well, yes, I could do that. But I'd like a bit more variety, and I know that, somewhere in the past, I saw a name generator that would do various Forgotten Realms names but I can't find it now. Maybe someone here knows of it?
Even then, I know I've seen good fantasy name generators out there. Anyone have a favorite?
hey, what's a good first level adventure for 4th edition that isn't Keep on the shadow dark bad place?
The new Slaying Stone module was kind of cool. It's more of a sandbox setup with the characters exploring an abandoned city (well, except for the goblins, kobolds, and orcs...) looking for an artifact. It's a little more open ended instead of a point A to point B dungeon crawl since you can explore the different buildings/locations in any order.

MARSH WHAT'S THE CAMPAIGN SETTING? FORGOTTEN REALMS!?
Yeah sure, lets go with that.
MAAAARSH what do i pm to you? my character-creator info sheet? would that work?
That'd work, anything that'll give me some sort of idea of what feats, skills, items and so on your character's got. I have D&Di so I can look up stuff on my own if need be.
Also, you're apparently the only interested dude so this should be an interesting game to run.

I might play if I get up in time. I miss your games.
That'd be fine as well, I've got nothing to do all day tomorrow so I'll be handy for questions, last minute joinees and so on and so forth. Should be fun.

I am currently playing my first D&D style game ever! It's a play by post game run by taky with a bunch of chaps from the writer's block.
It's about mutants rebelling against the establishment. Or something.

Didn't we both play a brief game GM'ed by Pony? I remember one short, intensely hilarious session.

GM'd by Mori.
It's the first game I have played that went past one day, let me put it that way.
Rank put me in a D&D game that didn't quite get started.
Mori's game involved my character making some thug shit his pants.

Picked up the Dark Sun adventure, a Forgotten Realms adventure, and a Pathfinder adventure. Haven't had a chance to read anything yet but the DS booklet comes with a nice big map of an arena and some pre-gen character cards.
I was limited to one book so I picked up the Death Watch and I went with my brother and asked him to pick up the Dark Sun one
But the really creepy people were out in force
my roommate just asked me if I could run a 4E campaign at the game shop he works at
and it's a pretty good opportunity to run this campaign that I wanted to do, but I might have to scale back some of the "flashback" elements I was going to do
basically the characters would go into a trance or something along those lines and they would play out events from a long time ago (that would be major pieces of the campaign's backstory), only they'd be in like, 3.5 or earlier
which was going to be a problem anyways because I barely understand 3.5 in the first place

Anyways the plan was to open up with a big flashback to an epic final battle scene in the capital city, but I think opening with that would be more work for everyone, especially me
The first encounter I have planned for the actual characters should be pretty fun, though, and should hopefully kind of skip most of the "we are all at a bar for some reason and now we are drunk and getting up to shenanigans" stuff. I did that last campaign, and even though the first encounter involved a bunch of goblins invading the tavern, I still had a scenario emerge where the dragonborn fighter tried to rape a horse.
There was a game I was in once where it started with a bar scene and for whatever reason one of the characters refused to leave the bar. The next session the player wasn't invited back.
